Is it my imagination or do cruise missles do less damage than torpedoes. Now, I understand they travel faster, like 250m/s faster, and can be fitted on frigate standard launchers. But come on, why the hell does it take missle launcher operation lvl 5 to use them. One would think that the torps would need that instead, while the cruise missles would be below the torps. So if anyone can clarify this for me, that would be great.

Cruise Missiles have unlimited range and no splash damage, thus avoiding unintented damage to people that do no participate in your smirkishes.
This means Cruise Missiles are even useable in Empire-space, if you're at war with a Corp - Torpedoes are mostly not.
Besides, you get damage boni for training up the CM skill thus they can almost reach Torpedoe damage.

Cruise missles do more damage/time due to their low volume compared to torpedoes.

Wrong - wrong, I'm afraid. Unlimited range no, they have a travel time of 2 minutes (240km range at standard missiles 5). You're right about the splash damage, but they still hit things in their way, which is almost as bad.

also blast radius is 250 m, so they can still knock ppl, gates and sentrys around. Not to mention cans and drones.
Just not so bad as torps blast rad.

One good thing with cruise missiles vs torps also is that it exist FoF cruise missiles, can bee quite handy

Missiles really need to fly through non targeted objects when they're fired at something.
I mean it's just lame that if someone hides behind a jumpgate and it hits the jumpgate, your ass is toast and concord will kill you.
Turrets don't have line of sight restrictions, npc missiles don't, why do player missiles??? it's a huge disadvantage for missile users.
Oh and about cruise missiles vs torpedoes, I was looking at EVE-DB and some 'test' Raven/Scorpion data showed that there might be a 5%/lvl dmg bonus for cruise missiles on these ships soon.. That would make cruise missiles almost as damaging as torpedoes, on Caldari battleships. ------

Don't tease me. That beats the hell out of the current bonuses. Did that test data indicate which (or both) current bonuses were removed? I'm assuming just the optimal range bonus, but you never know.

The Raven is the powerhouse of the Caldari Navy. With its myriad launcher slots and powerful shields, few ships can rival it in strength or majesty.
Special Ability: 5% bonus to Cruise Missile Damage and increase in firing speed for Missile Launchers per Caldari Battleship level.
The first Scorpion-class battleship was launched only a couple of years ago, and those that have been built are considered to be prototypes. Little is known of its capabilities, but what has been garnered suggests that the Scorpion is crammed to the brink with sophisticated hi-tech equipment that few can match.
Special Ability: 5% bonus to Cruise Missile Damage and 5% increase in max shield hitpoints per level.
Test data though, probably won't go live. One could hope though. :) ------
