Hello everyone, i currently am in a level 2 Media productions course which has just been a waste of time..
I complete 2-3 units or even whole project's worth of work and then our teachers change the name of the units/projects with marginally different criteria, and frankly i have had enough of it.
So i thought.. ''Why not go get a job?'' Which i found out is nigh impossible thanks to areas looking for experienced workers but next to nobody my age has experience in work due to nobody hiring them, not to mention the fact that college expect's me to come in the days where i have to go job hunting (which i have been doing for 5 months and not gotten a single interview).
Im only 18 but still, i want to go straight into work as soon as possible only nowhere has a job going, what can-/-should i do?
information towards my next move would be very much appreciated, Are we losing our title as Demi-God? what if their will be an upgrade? such as a D.E.M.I-GOD V1.2?-á -Scourged through the years .. Revived through fire, born through machinery, killed through silence. |

In considering I live and study in the UK, more specifically London, I can only give my suggestion based on the current economic situation here. The first and most important aspect of study is finding a course you find enjoyable and believe it will benefit you in the future, I've had countless friends who picked courses based on the salary after graduating only to realise half way through that the course simply doesn't suit them. It is almost impossible to find a job in London without adequete education (atleast a Bachelor) and a sizeable amount of work experience completed in order to prove to the employer that you not only have the knowledge but the fundamental skills required to fit into a working environment. It is in your best interest to find a course you enjoy even if that means you redo a year or two afterall, you will be in a better position later on. Secondly, carry on with education no matter how pressed you are to gain income, if you really need it, find a weekend / holiday job. Not only will you get money but a referee on your CV which is invaluable. A good result in a BTEC / ALeves (the exams before Uni) will definitely give you the oppurtunity to gain a place at a good Uni. |

Well, my advice is to go to college and enjoy your time being more or less free (college is free where I live, so that is awesome). Expand your horizons and your mind, enjoy making new friends and seeing interesting things. Don't rush into a job. If you find current education not to your tase, move to a different one.
I got a job, but I got it out of a need for money. We are all wage slaves after all. Luckily I get to use my college degree and I work in an interesting company doing satellite communications. But still, it is just wage salvery and I would be on the street as soon as the company figures out a way to automate my function here (still many years off on this point, luckily).
As for jobs, the human population is exponentially growing, and technology is making jobs fewer. Even the service industry is getting more and more autoamted. Thus the criteria for getting a job is ever rising, and more and more people are left jobless. Some creative thinking can still get you a job, for now, but ultimatly so many people will be jobless thst the system will fail entierly.
Getting into farming and growing food locally will actually be a good idea, and if you can do that now and still make a profit from it, even better. |

I also live in the UK only in hertfordshire where jobs are really hard to find. and your information is really well placed thank you.
The only problem is locally it costs me money i do not even have just to go to college (-ú4.50 - just to go to the town where my college studies are at 3-5 times a week which is daunting to be honest, just you know when you get to a certain point and think ''wait what am i doing?!'' its like one of those moments where i noticed college courses (i have taken 3 completely differant courses: Media [my current course], Level 2 IT BTEC first diploma, and i took a music course which i loved only i didnt get the grades thanks to a convenient case of broncitus during musical exam periods.) I'll tell you the same thing that I told my little brother, "Do what you want to do". He spent 4 years at UofI going for the Architectural Master only to realize that he didn't really want to do it. What was holding him back from changing was our mother because 1) she is footing the bill and 2) she is well known to put pressure on us and make us feel like we have to live to her standards and not ours. I helped lobby his case to her and eventually we got her to see the light and proved to her that his new course in graphics and animation can be just as rewarding, plus he will still finish in the same time because they share a lot of the same courses with drafting. He's happier and she still has her child bragging rights (yes she still brags about her mid-30's children).
For a job we can't help you much. For starters, we have no idea where you are so we have no idea just how bad the job search is in the area. I know in my area there are tons of jobs but the issue with where I live is that 95% of them don't even pay a cost of living wage, which means you either have to shack up with other people or get 2 of these worthless jobs just to make a living. There have no requirements for the last 15 years obligating employers to match wages with the CoL of the surrounding area. But back to the point, many college students usually go for part time jobs at fast food joint of grocery stores. My little brother again just recently got a part time job as a waterboy for the football team. It's not much but at least he got a little extra cash to play with. Usually during the summer vacation he'll come back home and pick up something local to refill the coffers.
Also there are schools that offer night courses for those of us living in the 9-5 world. I've personally have been going to ITT for the past year and a half while working my full time job. It sucks and I'm a stranger in my own home but its got be done as I've been paying my own bills for the last decade. I've forgotten what sleep or sanity means. If this school has trouble accommodating then perhaps look into one that has a little more flexibility (hopefully your credits will transfer over, I know mine won't). |

Alternatively, here is a very useful website which provides a great choice of options if you decide not to going Uni ranging from foundation degree programs, apprenticeship vacancies and gap year jobs. I know quite a few people have used this and are happy with the choice they made. However, keep in mind some, if not most of these offers will still require some sort of formal education so it is in your best interest to complete your current diplomas.

Go for a career that earns as much money as you think you have the capability to earn. Sweat blood and tears until you're in your late 20's/early-mid 30's, then switch to a career you (now you're older) have the experience to know will be fulfilling. When you're earning lots of money in your first career, do not fall into the trap of spending more as your earnings increase; live frugally and save save save to get the house, the small mortgage and the large bank balance you should want. Now you'll be in your late 30's, in a job you love, with few financial worries, and be able to spend lots of time with your children. That's what I did by the way and I recommend it to anyone. |

why dont you try and get an aprenticeship ?. Im sorry that your uni learning gubbins isnt working out but this is what happens when successive governments demean educational qualifacations to score brownie points in westminister .retrain as a plumber or a roofer or a sparky ... most of my pub mates are self employed tradesmen ...and they make a fkn shed load of cash .
so much so that when I need to save for a holiday they use me as a skivy for a week or weekend and they bung me roughly -ú100 a day to to tidy up make the tea blah blah .
and im employad full time as a systems admin ....go figure ...most of my mates have a bad year if they do clear at least -ú50K a year . |

I'm sure there will be people who will disagree with me on this but honestly, I think in your young years you have to be a selfish **** otherwise people ( mainly your parents ) are automatically going to pick what they think is best for you and unless they're parents who know you well and actually listen to what you have to say they're going to be wrong. Take charge, see if you can switch to something you like with little or no cost and if you can't do what others have suggested and either get an apprenticeship or work placement and practically stalk the person employing you for a job.
Speaking from experience that's probably your best option, I made the mistake of taking a A Level Games Design course and I had no idea how utterly shite it would be.

I'm in the same boat as you, Callista. Desperately searching for a job to no avail, despite a really good resume and a ton of (wait for it) Retail experience. Nobody is hiring right now and this economic depression isn't just in the United States.
I feel for ya. |
