I just hit the month mark, about 1.7 mil skill points mainly in learning, engineering, electronics etc... very basic stuff.
My question is, is Amarr really that bad? Most of what i read on the forums paint amarr as the red-headed stepchildren of eve. My own experience in doing level 1,2, and now 3 missions is that Cap use is a huge problem, and it seems like I kill pretty slowly to boot. Before i start to sink SP into lasers, I just wanted to ask some of the more knowledgeable veterans if they think it is worth it. I really dont like being limited to two damage types, although the unlimited ammo is quite nice.
So, can someone break down the amarr problem for a noob? And, should i just start training something else before i waste too many SP?
thanks.

It all depends on what you want to do.
I fly Amarr. Knowing how to handle your cap is basic 101 of using Amarr ships. While the Amarr might not be top dog in either PvP or PvE they do have some usability. I think a lot of the problem people have with Amarr is that they're a race of religious fanatics and slave owners more than anything else.
Get your cap usage and laser skills up and you'll be able to hit things harder for longer

Minmatar are the most skill-intensive race, but at least you can apply those skills to either Caldari or Gallente ships as well. Amarr use a weapon type no one else uses, have comparatively limited mid slots, and rely on cap to survive to a higher degree than anyone else. In short the "trouble" with Amarr is that their ship operation is the least like anyone else's, so if you're an Amarr pilot and you start cross-training skills to fly other races' ships, those skills are more likely to take away from your efficiency with Amarr ships.
That said, it's not like there's any huge fundamental difference between Amarr and anyone else, but they're still sort of in a league of their own on some things.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 04/01/2008 02:45:11 To me the majority of Amarr ships just don't work properly, they lack any kind of versatility but at the same time fail to make up for that with some really strong points.
While they can work well given enough SP, expensive ship/fit and in certain situations you are undoubtably less well off in most situations when using Amarr ships and weapons. Ofcourse there are some ships that DO work nicely, but they are mostly the more expensive ones out there. They lack a proper cruiser, their BC's aren't brilliant and their BSes aren't that great either. And lets not get started on lasers...
Again they do well in certain situations, thing is that you don't always control the situation.

Yes and no.
You need to train more skills to be good with Minmatar. You need to train skills higher to be good with Amarr (and training to L5 is killer).

This man speaks the truth. Amarr are very fun to play but they arein the end just a one trick tank and gank pony. Other races seem to have a bit more variety and function better overall IMHO. Although Amarr T2 ships are really nice!

I dont actually mind being a one trick pony. It's lasers that irk me. For all their drawbacks... you would think they do something well? As far as i can tell, Amarr tank ok, do ok dmg, and are pretty slow.
I just dont want to sink a bunch of SP into energy turrets just to find out i wasted a lot of time.
Just to clarify, I probably wont end up in huge fleet battles judging from my alliance.. mostly smaller battles. I would like to be a damage dealer that isnt going to blow up if something looks at me the wrong way. I had originally thought of going along the khanid line of ships, but people have been telling me not to mix caldari type skills and amarr..
T2 amarr ships look pretty good to me, but that is a long way off since I am only a month old.

The only SP you'll "waste" on energy turrets is the actual energy turret skills.
All the other supporting gunnery skills help whether you're using lasers, projectiles, or hybrids.
Armor tanking skills also carry over to most Gallente ships and some Minmatar (and the odd Caldari fit).
Cap skills benefit all race types.
So you arn't gimping yourself very much even if you fly mainly Amarr. You can still cross-over to any number of ships and fly them effectively.
That being said, I've seen some wicked Amarr setups that melt through shield and armor at a disturbing rate.

I played amarr all the time i played eve and i liked it. Yes there are some drawbacks like lower speed or just a few midslots, but the benefits are nice as well. I tend to never have cap problems and can tank alot. The damage is also good - in most situation i'm one of the top damage dealers on killmails.
For missionrunners it sucks, caldari is best for that. For solo pvp its difficult, gallente or minmatar is better. But in gangs its awesome. The longer i play the more i find out the supporting (boosting, repping, ...) your m8s is the main advantage as an amarr pilot - and they will love you for that
