If you are lucky enough to survive to get to the top.
I live in the upper-middle class area - the kids here are spoiled to the point mummy and daddy probably buy them drugs and booze. I on the other hand live in the area but don't have that lifestyle, I have seen two go into rehab and 3 have just dissapeared off the face of the Earth, noone knows where they are but my money is a sleeping bag on the streets or worse.

I don't mean that. I mean all it takes is for you to be unlucky to walk past some nightmares and you might end up six feet under. If you are lucky enough to survive then you would stay at the top. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

I am not a supporter of getting physical with teenagers.
However, in Denmark we had at one point an educational ship for young male teenagers who were stealing, using drugs, drinking, beating others etc. The idea was hard work and prompt punishment. They would get a slep in the face from the captain, but they knew once they had faced that punishment, all was forgiven. These boys learned consequence in a rough and hard environment, and a documentary later saw how a large percentage of them had managed to become a part of society, getting engineering and other university educations. Every last one of them thanked their change to the time at sea under a carismatic captain.
Ofcourse this horrible, horrible concept was removed because it was absolutely horrible that these kids got a slap, and actually managed to correct these kids. Instead, it's better to label them ADHD or whatever it's called, drugging them up and whatnot.
Not saying that is how you should parent your teens, but if they are on a slippery slope, you need to be consequent, and fight some hard battles.

My lack of rebellion sometimes makes me wonder if I somehow missed out on lots of fun...(21 now)
On the other hand I do subscribe to the Starship Troopers (book) ideal of raising children; strict dicipline if they step out of line.
I got smacked when I was young when I misbehaved; a smart whack on the bum never hurt anybody, espcially if its done in public to add the element of public humiliation to really drive the message home.
As far as I'm concerned ADHD is far far over-diagnosed, (if it actually exists at all, as a Psychology student I have my doubts). Your child isn't sick, THEY'RE JUST BADLY BEHAVED. There is of course an element of age-based rebellion, but I have no doubt a lot of parents are to blame too for not setting rules when the children were young. There's no point introducing rules at age 15, its too late by then. The children need to know limits as soon as they're yound enough to understand what you're saying.

Hang in there Dave, they do come out the other end just fine. There is growing evidence that the 'monster'phase isn't just teenagers being gits, but that the brain literally has to do some re-wiring to prepare them for adulthood.
Both mine were prize prats as teenagers. Now one is a Captain in the army, and the other is a violin player with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
Oh, and yes. I'm proud as hell with both of them as you might be able to tell

My approach for dealing with problematic teenage offspring is beautifully elegant in its simplicity: I don't breed them. I'm nearly 36 and so far it has been working pretty effectively.
Despite my best efforts, I'm aware this strategy may fail someday, so if that's the case I'll have to resort back to this thread for some tips and alternate tactics.

I have come to firmly believe that a lack of beatings is at the core of our society's moral decay.
I copped my Dad's hand and even a dose of the strap when needed and I turned out just fine. Never had any trouble with the cops, at school, whatever. But on the other hand, my younger brother was raised the same as far as I could tell and he's a little ****. Go figure.
Anyway, next time some bleeding-heart child shrink tells you that spanking kids damages them or some ****, smack them upside the head. Pain is the best educator there is, or do kids where you live keep burning there hands on the stove because "No stove tells me what to do *****!" Yeah, I thought not.
But as to the OP, if your daughter was OK before she hit this change, it's probably just adolescent rebellion. Have a look to see if she's fallen in with 'the wrong crowd', it's possible some judicious beatings of persons other than your precious flower might be in order. Pay especial attention to any budding Lotharios in her circle, since at this vulnerable point a poor romantic decision might look much better to her than it will in a few years. Words to the effect of "If you make my daughter cry, I will make you cry" should do the trick, if not see earlier point about beatings. ----------

Edited by: Malakai0 on 12/01/2008 12:45:43 I wish you best of luck, our society and especially government in the US are extremely broken. Your kid has a smaller chance of making it through the education system and becoming 'successful' than you think. You want to do whatever you can to keep your kids out of the public education system here.
You should really be concerned about the unplayable debt being dumped on our generation by the leaders of this country. As the standard of living decreases (and it will as larger debt sucks up more interest from the economy and inflation continues unchecked), fewer and fewer kids will end up successful.
To define successful, let's say living with the same standard of living as you have, or better.

A lot of people think it's the kids fault. They don't care, they are shallow, ect ect. I believe strongly the system is flawed, and the results we are seeing now were predicted long ago when who ran education changed in America awhile back.
Its only when parents have your pathetic attitude will their children potentially fail.
The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

Here's some great writings that are extremely critical of the US education system. Until recently it was considered a part of the republican platform to dump federal oversight of the education system, there were several good reasons for it besides cost.

We are the worst of the top 18 industrialized countries in education according to another recent UN study, and our record dropout rates continue to outpace the previous years records.
No need to get hostile just a friendly discussion with an alternative point of view =) Anyone can turn out great and do whatever they want to with life, but the odds continue to stack up against the young ones.
