Several months ago I played for about 2 weeks before getting caught up in work and school, and had to just put the game down. I just now started up again, and I plan on sticking with it for quite some time.(I say this becauseI probably dont have a full idea on the fuss over alt characters.)
I've lurked the forums for quite some time and have read all sorts of stories about spies, thieves, and all manner of shady characters with evil intent who have been alts of people who wish to keep their main's image squeaky clean (for the most part). Of course all those those activities have their place in eve, and I wouldn't dream of wanting them removed. My concern is mostly for the stories of those of characters (many cases of them being alts so far as I know) that steal off into the night with several billion worth of isk in corp property, hand off the goods to someone else and then drop completely out of the galaxy (meaning: deleted).
The problem I have is not the theft (sorry, but if you let it happen, too bad), but that there is no need for the theif to have any sense of responsibility for his actions or feel any consequences (mostly because of no leads to the identity of the main). In some cases it was just an alternate char built for that specific purpose and then destroyed once the objective is complete.
Well, I'm sort of off track here. The idea I had is that why not create a common, unique name to be shared amongst the main char and alts. It could be like a last name or something along those lines.
Example: Common Name: Zenchai Characters: Trezka Zenchai, Gerraltt Zenchai, Athran Zenchai.
It allows for different characters, while still maintaining a common identifier. Now, It does have it's problems. For one, how would you implement it properly. Two, it's not very supportive of a role play environment. Three, It's not going to stop those that pay for multiple accounts anyway. While it's not the best idea, I think it provides a little extra protection for corps from being completely blindsided by that sort crime, by giving a better background of the sort of characters that corp accepts as members.

EDIT: And not everyone does 2 names.

It can be photoshopped quite easily, unfortunately. All you need is a picture with your joining character selected and another one that has the 2 spare slots empty, from there it's a no-brainer.

Multiple accounts are cheap ...
... alts from another account are dang-near untraceable.

That's all very true. The reality of it I guess is it would be a fairly major implementation which would be disliked by a good deal of characters, for only a small, potential bit of extra security.

Corps being got like this by alts on the same account as someone's main aren't very good corps to be honest. With proper security measures in place it would take a long time for someone to have the level of trust needed to be able to steal anything valuable from a corp. The problem is that most corps don't have the proper measures in place. In that case, it isn't a problem at all, just a failing of the players.
