It's time for yet another Live Dev Blog, this time about Fiction! We'll focus on the fiction in EVE Online that is not in the game and to help us do that we'll have Abraxas, Writer at CCP and the guy who writes the Chronicles. Abraxas will be joined by t0nyG, Lead Writer and the guy who is writing the upcoming EVE novel. We might get some previews of their hard work, and they'll of course answer questions about writing fiction, for all those out there who likes reading or writing. To help us ask them the questions we'll have Mindstar as usual.
This will all take place in the "Live Dev Blog" in game channel this Thursday, 17 January, from 20:00 to 21:00 GMT. To participate you'll need EVE Voice active and then join the in game channel and join audio. A recording of the Live Dev Blog will be made available at a later date.
Asking questions is easy, just post your questions in this thread! Please remember that the topic is the EVE Fiction and we'll focus on the fiction outside the actual agme, other questions may not be answered.

I have a question for t0nyG:
Is it true that the forthcoming Eve novel will be focusing on the behind-the-scenes political shenanigans that have taken place in the Empire since the death of Doriam II?

Q:
Much of the 'back story' has remained largely unexpanded upon - what I mean by this is if you look at the Backstory here on the forums, and say look at the History of the Amarr pretty much nothing has been added in terms of detail.
Most P&P RPGs have deeply detailed 'worlds' with a wealth of information on NPCs locations and history. Take Damtorsad for example; 1 Chronicle that I know of, but where can I find more information on Damtorsad? How big is it? Who are the key movers and shakers there? What does it look like? Does it have slums, a bustling trade center, endemic crime? Were there ever riots in the streets? Has it ever been afflicted with plague?
Ive no idea.
CCP has got some great writing talent (just read Abraxas' latest Chronicle which was awesome as a story but Im not sure what it had to do with EVE).
The question? Oh right sorry -
1. Will CCP be putting their pool of writing talent into fleshing out the backstory as it exists now.
2. If so, will we see that fiction manifested in EVE in future - for example physical in game locations to visit (via ambulation) in Eve itself?
Thanks :)
C.

Will we, in a near future, see ingame events linked with novels or chronicles (when there's enough linking material for this) ?
Maybe the question is not too much for Abraxas and t0nyG... Well, answer if you can. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Question : Was Eve intended to so lack depth that these out of game Chronicles and stories are necessary to give a sence of place to players, or was the need for players to feel encompassed by the world you have built for them an unintended aspect that occured only after the game had been released? -Imiarr- |

Abraxas,
Traditionally Chronicles have been fairly short snippets that were insights into a particular, narrow subject in the EVE universe. Whether this has been done through simply presenting factual information up front or by means of a narrative is up to the given writer. While the Black Mountain series has a couple more encyclopedic entries ("The Sanctuary"), most have been part of a story that, while not entirely uninsightful, seems to focus on plot and characters much more than presenting new information. What was the reason for changing the old-style understanding of what a Chronicle was and do you intend to tweak it more?

Hi!
I ve serveral Questions too, because i like writing fictions in my freetime.
Ingame there a lot of Names like:(naglfar/ragnarok/munin/hugin which have an mytholgy root.
Are Fictions around this names welcome, which could be eve related include a bit of mytholgy?
The Border between "a story" and "an adult story" is for serveral ppls diffrent.( pa example Brutallity...+ )
Will it be possible to have someone look (if u are not sure)at it before it getting deleted? ( like a censor)
If i would like to write an fiction event story about a unknow Npcs and his life combined to eve-events.
Is there a chance for professional support, and adivse to keep it running?
( at least it woud be a fiction inside a fiction)
This are my questions for now. Perhaps there will come more.

Bah my question... but maybe a bit more as for specifics...
The Stargate "scientific" back story still does not coincide with what is actually in game. Are there plans to update/expand on this?
Do you have plans to update/expand the prime back story for factions and empires (such as more specific time lines in each case and/or leadership structures and locations, the current depth seems a bit shallow)?
Also, the Black mountain series has been most entertaining, will there be affects in game, or is this merely entertainment? Is there a reason for veering off from chronicles that affect/expound in game content?

I am fairly new to EVE and have been reading through the Chronicles. Kudos to the authors on many engaging stories.
My question is if there is a facility for those in the EVE community to contribute stories to the EVE Chronicles. Obviously, these would need to be reviewed through an editing process to check for continuity with the general EVE storyline and concept. It would also be necessary in order to assure that CCPs accepted concepts of language, violence, and bawdiness are adhered to. Is there a plan for this type of situation to occure in the future?
We are dealing with a huge universe in EVE. We should have an active and diverse history in which to immerse ourselves.
Thank you for all of your efforts.

Are there plans to add more of the backstory into the game itself through missions or some kind of "readable" items that could drop as loot?
For example I do believe the cosmos missions were great but sadly enough there aren't that many of them and you can only do them once. A couple more of them inspired by a nice storyline would certainly add to eve.

We are dealing with a huge universe in EVE. We should have an active and diverse history in which to immerse ourselves.
I'm capable of answering this. The answer is yes. Several of the Chronicles are written by people outside of CCP's offices. The most recent and famous examples are Hands of a Killer, written by Discorporation of Band of Brothers, Cold Wind, written by Herko Khergans, and The Crystal Boulevard, written by none other than yours truly.
Hands was written and sent straight to CCP for publication. Cold Wind and Crystal Boulevard appeared first of the EVE Library forum before being accepted as official fiction of the EVE Universe. It is possible, but the process can take a long time, it is subjective, and your work must fit in with the existing backstory and tone of EVE - not necessarily unremittingly dark (look at how flippant the narrator in Crystal Boulevard is!) but with an understanding that few things in the universe are sunshine and roses.
I'm sure Abraxas and Mr. Gonzales will elaborate on the process further, but the simple answer is yes, it can happen and it has happened in the past.
But now, to build upon this idea, I have a few questions of my own.
1) Say I have an idea, a pitch, for an EVE novel myself, one that I think would enhance the backstory of EVE without intruding on existing material or gameplay and could in fact enhance it. Precisely who should I get in contact with in order to make such a pitch? Are such things even being considered at present time? Would CCP consider bringing a player, as Mr. Gonzales once was, onto the writing team for another novel in the future (assuming the first novel is at least a modest success)?
2) Unpaid submissions to CCP are all well and good, but what about those of us who would love to be in your shoes directly? Is there any room at CCP for more cooks in the kitchen, especially if we've proven we're competent with the food? Could there be room in the future? Should I just bugger off and tool around in my Moros for the rest of time?
Unrelated to that topic, a few questions about the progression of some events.
3) Most of the people involved in EVE's story development agree that, rather like the Emperor Situation, the Gallente Election was a bit of a fiasco. Did it play out at all like you desired? Are there things you wish you could do differently with it now? Will we see more Gallente politics of this nature in the future? Does Mentas Blaque secretly keep a copy of Mein Kampf in his broom closet?
4) In relation to this, does the lack of player-generated fiction and 'role play', for want of a better term, in regards to the Gallente Federation puzzle you at all? Do you think more could be done with the Gallente than what is done now?
EDIT as I thought of another good one: 4.5) Speaking of the Gallente background, between the various names of the tech 2 ships and the references in a few articles to things like "Mercury Square", is it safe to assume that what remains of Gallente spiritualism is grounded primarily in Greco-Roman pagan beliefs? Similarly, with names like Huginn, Muninn, Naglfar etc., is it safe to assume that Minmatar are by and large what we would call followers of the Norse religion?
And to round us off:
5) Mr. Gonzales, you mentioned at Fanfest that you believe that there are conditions in Caldari society for them to become something 'really evil'. Can you elaborate on this at all, or would that involve terrible spoilers?
6) For Abraxas: you were also a player at one point in time. Since we know a few players have since become CCP employees (such as Ifni), do you feel comfortable revealing what your previous identity was? The masses are curious.
That should be plenty enough, I think. Looking forward to Thursday! -----
Character back under original management. |

As I have been working on building a character background, it would be wonderful from my perspective to have a timeline of sorts from arrival in the EVE system to present. Are there plans to arrive at some such timeline that people can use in development of characters and storylines?
Each major event on that timeline would probably be reserved for the main Chronicles authors to provide any storyline that accompanies the event. This would allow CCP to control the major "arc" of the history and events within EVE. Those events that happen in-between the major timeline events could very easily be fleshed out by by varying authors whos works will end up converging into the main events. This will create a greater texture for the history of EVE, and can show underlying motivations that lead to the events on a micro, as oppose to macro, scale. Of course, any official novels will also provide milestones along the way of the timelines.
With this formalization of timeframes, it would also be possible to provide stories surrounding major events from the perspective of the different races, corporations, factions, etc.... This would provide a wealth of possibility in exploring human nature and how it responds/perceives events in their own racial/cultural/socio-economic background.
Is there any plan in the future to provide a more formalized timeframe of events in the future?

hi just a little question i play eve and its a great game using time codes witch at this time i find easier the question is as with time codes we buy time to play and we can get isk with them how about being able to buy training time on skills. i think if it were some thing like being able to do it 1 every 2 months the that skill that you havent trained because it 40 days is a bit better if a month has been removed i think timecodes for this idea is the best way how about it eve you would make more money and our long skills are shortened regards bardan a bit

Have you checked out the Backstory on each race? Under each race there is a timeline starting at when the solar system was colonized to the present. That might help ya.
As for my own questions, I do have a couple. Now I have not read every short story or Eve chronicle, but the ones I have read, I've thoroughly enjoyed.
Firstly, when is this Eve novel expected to be released? And can we expect more?
Secondly, will we continue to learn more about each races backstory? I'm particularly interested in the Minmatar rebellion, and am hoping the book/s and/or more chronicles will continue to improve upon the histories of each race, not just current politics.
One idea that I think could be included in Ambulation is to have vast libraries in the stations that you can go to and read short stories or chronicles in-game, specific to the region you are in. For example if you want to learn more about the Amarr, and you dock in one of their stations, you can go to their library and learn more. And obviously these would be more popular if you add in more "books" digital or hardcopy, than what is on the Eve website.

Hey guys, when are you going to hire me officially so I can spend all my time writing those EON Chrons instead of only when I manage to get some free time?
Nah, just kidding with that one.
Here's a real question. When the acquisition of White Wolf was announced, a lot of us who are interested in the backstory were optimistic that there would be supplements released containing a lot of ancillary information about EVE's backstory. It's stuff that's not really important to be in game (like planetary stats that actually make sense), but that would really be of interest to backstory nuts like myself. What sort of progress, if any, is being made on these types of supplements?

In which year after the eve gate closed we are atm?
22350? Day 234 ? time ...
It woud be interesting to have an in game timer, to add timestamps on written storys.
Is there something actually in game? Or are there plans adding this into it?.
A usefull improvment for the eve timer, and handy for story writers.
