Hello all... I started playing the game 2 days ago and managed to have some lvl 2 agents. Made a lot of kill missions lvl 1 agent but a Merlin i bought, but now on my firsts lvl 2 missions it s becoming harder.
My merlin has 2 standard missile launchers loaded with light missiles (2x12), and 2 125mn railguns, one is standard other one is prototype. On missions now i have to fight 3 NPCs, the is that i have to stay at about 20 25km to avoid their missiles (if i m closer than 20km they destroy my defences quickly), and i can only destroy one of them launching on him about 75% of my missiles.
So i bought a Kestrel and was planning to have then 4 missile launchers in order to be able to have enough missiles to destroy them all and staying out of range of their missiles.
As i am new i don t have much skills trained so i thought it was my only solution.
Is that a good idea? Anyone has a better one? Thx for helping... :)

First - train heavy missiles. They still work fine in a standard launcher, and are much better than lights. If you keep using the merlin, training virtually any of the gunnery skills will help.
Remember - when flying a frigate, speed is you friend. When fighting mixed groups, try and take down the fastest first, this should split the group up so that you don't have to face them all at the same time.

Throw your 125 out and use 150 Rails. Then take longer range munition so your opt. range wound fit around 18 to 20 km. Stay there in orbit and kill them one after the other. Install a small shield booster for the worst case. Thats it.
I killed all of my level 2 mission mobs with a Tristan with 2 150th an 1 Launcher. Most of the time I had an assault launcher in ( 3 light missiles ) and that was all I used.
There is no need for a Kestrell.
Btw. training the skill sharpshooter will also help a bit.

The other thing to train is High Speed Maneuvering skill. A microwarpdrive can help a frigate escape death in many many occasions, or help you get out of damage range and closer to that long ranged safety point.
Heavy missiles are essential. They not only do more damage (3x more), but have double the range of light missiles.
A kestrel with 4 standard launchers and heavy missiles, orbiting between 20-30km from the NPCs and using speed to keep it safe (microwarpdrive if possible, otherwise multiple afterburners) is a very formidable ship.
However the other tactics described above for using the merlin more safely are also very good words of advise. Try a few situations in both, and see which play-style you prefer.

Edited by: Captain Deluxe on 24/03/2004 12:09:00 Thx for your help guys (or ladies ;) )...
As i already bought the kestrel i ll try to use it (and train heavy missiles)... And use it primary when i know where ennemies are and that i have some kind of initiative.
I'll keep the Merlin and equip him with theses 150 rail guns and use it for my escort or during dangerous travels where i can be jumped on, when i don t have the initiative and need quick response fire...
Thx to all btw for helping :)) [Edit]: And sorry for my bad english hihi :p

Also remember that you can always warp out and "rest" when your capp or shields are down. Then you return to finish off. For my lvl 3 missions I sometimes have to go and rest 2-3 times with my Thorax

I tried the 2 methods a kestrel with 4 launchers and a MErlin with 2 launchers and two 150 railsgun with 60%range ammo
I took no damage from the two tries. But i only managed to destroy two of them the last one was wounded to 20% life. With the two methods i run out of ammo before finishing him
I guess i have just now to fine the method and get some true IRL skills at managing my ship :)

Carry more ammo. Seriously, you always want to bring plenty of extra ammo. Nothing sucks worse than suddenly having nothing to shoot at your target. |

Perhaps you didn't know that you can reload in space by right clicking on the guns and launchers?
You can reload with ammo in your cargo bay. You can even switch ammo/missiles this way if you carry multiple types in your cargo.
