Both the team here at CCP and the team at Transgaming are working on a new Mac patch which should address several graphics and stability issues. We are also working closely with Apple, Nvidia and ATI on some issues related to device drivers that are causing some of the reported graphics glitches. A release date for the patch has yet to be confirmed but it looks likely to be within the next two to three weeks, pending QA approval. I will update this thread with the full list of fixes once they are available.
The update distributed by Apple last week should have addressed a graphics issue in the map for users with an ATI R600 chipset (2400/2600 cards), however it would appear that Nvidia users are still experiencing the issue. As soon as we get any further information on progress towards addressing this issue we will let you know.
One of the things we are looking to address in the long run is the performance of the client and as part of this our QA Engineering team has been working hard on deploying a new benchmarking tool. With this in hand our development teams can now gather more accurate data on how the client handles a multitude of gameplay scenarios automatically, rather than having to manually replicate everything. We're looking forward to being able to use this tool to pinpoint where we need to implement more optimisations which will make the game experience smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.
We are currently looking specifically for Mac and Linux users to join our volunteer bughunter team and thereby help us diagnose and test issues directly related to those platforms. Participation in the ISD Bughunters team can provide you with valuable experience directly related to QA and testing procedures in the IT/Games industry while at the same time being part of a great team of people who actually manage to have a lot of fun while helping improve the game. If you are interested, you can submit an application here. Please make sure you note that you are specifically interested in volunteering for the Mac/Linux bughunters.

Is any progress being made in terms of bringing EVE to the Macbook/Mac Mini/other Apple products using integrated Intel cards being made?
From what I understand, the card in the Mac Mini will run EVE, but the driver Apple shipped with OS X has problems. I believe that if you run XP in bootcamp, the client will work well.
My friend plays EVE on his Mini right now, and saying that it's a terrible experience would be an understatement. He constantly has graphical issues, his client is unresponsive, and it induces kernel panics or total system hangs every hour or two. (And yes, he is paying a subscription for that...:p).
Just curious. --- SVP OwlManAtt, Yasashii Syndicate |

WhoaH! That sounds really great CCP! Can't wait for the patch. Hope you guys get a strong response from the Mac/ linux community when it comes to bug hunters. Q: How much does previous experience count towards being allowed into the team? (since I have none)

The problem with current Macbooks and Mac Minis is mainly a hardware issue. The Intel chipset in those machines cannot handle EVE's graphics consistently. So while in theory you can get it running under the likes of bootcamp, the result is far from pretty or stable. We have a Mac Mini in our office and have tried everything we can think of to get EVE to run better on it in the hopes of providing a workaround, but so far it has been an exercise in frustration. Which is a shame because I really would like to get myself a Mac Mini for home use.
That being said, it looks like the new Macbooks (and the Mac Air) include the Intel X3100 chipset, which on paper means they will be able to run EVE. However the shared graphics memory is not ideal, so until we can benchmark performance on one of these new machines this is not reliable information (read: Please don't go buy a Macbook and then come back to yell at me if EVE runs poorly ). If it turns out to work, then I for one will probably end up buying a Modbook...got to play with one at Macworld and it made a really good impression. Whether EVE is playable with a pen interface is another question entirely. I certainly hope so.

While previous experience in QA or testing environments is a plus, the volunteer team members come from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail go a long way. If you believe you can help out, why not submit an application anyway and see how things go? You do not need to be able to read code or make modifications. One of your tasks would be finding bugs and submitting detailed reports that we can use to fix them. You may also be asked to help our QA department test new versions of the client to make sure issues are resolved. That is only part of the life of a bughunter of course.

this is just stupid, there is no reason my macbook pro shouldn't out perform yoru standard PC in every way. I can run other things fine, the problem is clearly with Eve, not Mac. I mean seriously give me a break.
I have a 256 MB GeForce 8600M GT pci express. Lets get real, fix your issue.
Why would would it run PERFECT on my imac with tiger and run like **** on my macbook that has better specs, but Leopard??

I was not talking about the Macbook Pro. I was talking about the old version Macbook and Mac Mini. There are a lot of people playing EVE on Macbook Pro's running Leopard who are not experiencing major issues and yes, the hardware can cope nicely with EVE. Many of those who have experienced issues have filed bug reports which have let us address a number of problems and also approach the likes of Nvidia and Apple with requests for fixes, for instance to the drivers. This is something which we do on a regular basis for the Windows version of EVE as well. If you continue to experience issues that you feel are caused by EVE, please contact customer support who will do their best to assist you.

The EVE Mac client was tested on both Tiger and Leopard, although the fact that Leopard was released just before we released the Mac client meant that time was tight. But we did test, and in fact there were some last minute changes made to improve performance on Leopard. In the tests run by both us and Transgaming performance was deemed acceptable for release on both versions of the Mac OS. Not knowing exactly which issues you are experiencing means that I cannot offer any speculation as to how or when we will be able to resolve it.

I am currently running a dual boot OS Hackintosh (leopard 10.52) on my asus g2s Laptop. The cider client runs fine with the same crash issues I have in the other client (linux) on my unbuntu 7.10 install.
My second ASUS g2s runs Vista full premium trinity.
However 2 seperate mac machines i have in my office have issues。
I have put several leopard installs on Intel based pc's with mixed results. The issues were with the various hardware and not the leopard OSX.

nah. Its not really CCP's fault. Not so much anyway. I can name another product who show the same kind of behavior and level of performance as EVE; irritating and buggy in OSX yet seamlessly smooth in XP. Its more about porting a native windows system (with .dll and memory management scheme and hardware access methods (don't quote me on actual terms)) to something else which does things in a completely different way.
Leopard now really seam like a lost cause to me. When you are at looking at ways to create an entire runlevel just for a single app so it can at least match a full blown XP install. I'd pull a colorful tantrum on Mr. Jobs. Yes I would.. its not like we did not pay a premium for.. that..

CCP Whisper: a modbook is fun, but make sure you can realy do without a keyboard! Personaly i use a macbook pro with a separate A6-widescreen wacom tablet that fits easily into any laptop bag. If you dont have any desk-like place to put it on it is a bit unwieldy i admit, but the lack of a keyboard on the modbook would make it not very usefull to me. Just my 1.5 eurocent.
now back to the subject :)

Ive been told that recently reported keyboard issues have been rectified on the test server and the initial post indicated 2-3 weeks for the release.....

I belive they perhps wait for the upcomming Apple 10.5.2 Update wich contrains a whole graph card driver update. Perhaps with these optimized drivers and the new Mac client - most graphic glithes and performance will be fixed (at least i hope for this) So i belive. If the 10.5.2 update is available the client update will come too.

Are you still taking applications for the Mac beta testers? I submitted an application today. Would love to help. I do not seem to have as many issues as those reported in the forums. My only real issue is a grpahics glitch sometimes with the Fitting Screen, and a random EVE shutdown (memory leak??).
Any effort to make EVE a real Mac Application and not a emulation using Cider?? "Did something just fall off my ship??" |

Just to comment on the Macbook graphics problems. I'm running OSX Tiger on a Macbook with a GMA 950 graphics chipset. The client will run okay, without those infamous 'glitches' that make it totally unplayable so long as you set
[d3dgl] "FBO" = "N"
in the config file. The downside, and I'm presuming this could be fixed if I could actually get the dev team to pay attention, is that all the portraits (ships, pilots and some other items, although not generally modules) are actually 'pcitures of the bottom left of the screen', just bits of the GUI interface rather than the real portrait. Which, crucially perhaps, briefly flashes in the part of the screen before whats underneath gets used as the portrait.
FBO presumably stands for framebuffering, so I'm not surprised there are issues. But if you can live with not having portaits working right the client is perfectly playable apart from that. Although the FPS does only average 20 fps or so.

It might be partially cargo cult bug fixing on my part but I think it also helps to make sure the 'color depth' is set to '24-bit color with 8-bit alpha' and the 'depth/stencil format' is set to '24-bit z-buffer' in the application settings, as well as doing the tweak to the config file.

Great news. I'm really looking forward to the patch. I'm new to the game but I crashed dozens and dozens of times already, to the point I'm considering not subscribing after my trial period which ends in 9 days. I'd love to play the game but I already lost some drones and I can't risk investing time in a game where I'm a sitting duck on pvp for PC users

So it has been almost 5 weeks since the supposed graphics update patch was announced and still nothing? Not even a word as to what is happening? It is simply a bad business practice to announce that you're about to give you customer something in a given time frame and fail to do so.
I sincerely hope that this time has been used to make the MAC client's stability rival that of the PC. Otherwise you're going to have a lot of frustrated customers who have been very patient with the current issues all the while looking forward to and expecting improvement.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Now 5 weeks and no anything--patch or even simply commentary--from a dev. Now we have more aspects of the game where the Mac and Linux users are at a handicap as compared to Windows users: with the actions of JihadSwarm, those of us who mine need to be able to count on Show Info not instaclosing the client...even in highsec now! When can we expect a fix?! |
