Since the press release about EVE Online coming to Steam a few questions have popped up and we thought we should let everyone know a few more details .
- EVE Online is not on Steam yet, it will be available there in the very near future.
- Steam will be selling CD Keys only. This means you can buy a new account on Steam, but not pay subscription.
- Anyone on a trial can take advantage of this offer and can upgrade their trial account with the CD Keys Steam will be selling.
- Anyone can also get a Steam account and take advantage of the 21 day trial offered by Steam.
- Patches will be deployed as usual and not through Steam, no one is required to sign up to EVE Online through Steam.

It entails a rather serious view on the influx of players the steam advert will cause and how we will return to the prior way of eve - reboots every day and the like. ______________________________________________

I saw two replies in it already, here and here.
The thread was left open since it's really more about upgrades to Tranquility than EVE Online coming to Steam.

You've already had a response from the Dev team. Really, your thread isn't that important and your doomsaying, not especially insightful.

For those who don't know what the hell Steam is, here's a Wiki article on it.
My own personal impressions of Steam would be pretty positive. It's a simple thing to download and install, purchasing games is easy and they download very quickly. I like the fact that if I do a rebuild or get a new drive I can just install Steam and have it pull down all of my games again. It also auto-updates, which makes things easy.
Good move on CCP's part.

My apologies but both responses completely ignored the intended purpose of the thread. Anyway, i will take my leave from this thread (although it is directly relating to Steam hehehe) ______________________________________________

new boot drive last year, had the urge to play half life 2 again, found the uername and password, not much else needed, re-installed my games and re-activated them. All work fine :) Any way for steam to stop people like isk sellers making multiple trials to spam their offerings ?

Im a bit confused about the number of 'teh end is nigh!' posts on the forums regarding this announcement. For one thing EVE Online has been around for a long period, any serious game player would have to have been sat in a cave not to be aware of it. In that regard I think its questionable as to what degree we can see a 'mass influx' of new players.
So why would CCP bother with Steam? I don't think EVE is the focus of this move - the more likely reason is for the distribution of new titles: namely the World Of Darkness MMO under development by CCP/White Wolf.
Using an established title (i.e EVE) as a test bed for the deployment of an MMO through Steam prior to deploying a new title makes perfect sense to me.

Edited by: Alora Venoda on 23/01/2008 18:18:49 Steam has a zillion other games from other companies, and is basically just a combination of game manager/updater, online storefront, and community portal.
But to what level will EVE be incorporated into Steam? If I happen to have Steam and EVE already installed, will it automatically add EVE to its list of installed games? Will the Steam instant messenger work within EVE?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
Edited by: Nuyan Zahedi on 23/01/2008 18:24:50 Edited by: Nuyan Zahedi on 23/01/2008 18:23:58 I'm wondering about one thing here and I guess CCP isn't going to answer it. But how big is Valve's cut on this? I've heard of other games where it's pretty much 50% to the developers, 50% to Valve. That's still cheaper than other publishing ways, but still. Isn't it true that if you want your bucks to go to CCP, you're better off buying Eve-O on www.eve-online.com than on Steam? I recently bought some other indie developed games directly from their own site, instead of on Steam for this reason.
I do guess this is a very good way to promote Eve. You can also actually force your most stubborn friends to try out Eve by giving them it as a gift on Steam. And a 21-days trial is neat, might make use of that myself.
Oh, and can you do the 21-days trial and change it into a subscriber account on Eve-O instead of on Steam?
I'm pretty sure it's just about distributing and promotion, you can probably start your Eve-O account bought on steam without launching steam too. My blog
Ok How is this gonna benefit the current playerbase? Other than having to download yet another app for those that dont have steam already. This isnt a a way of creating better deployments, as the current system works fine, and CCP admitted they wont use Steam for this purpose.
So this must mean its more to do with sales and marketing. Great nothing wrong with wanting to sell your game to a wider audience and steam will certainly give Eve more exposure.
But the problem is CCP need to fix the issues that Eve has expecially the lag issue, this has got to be the major major issue with the game, and still we are waiting 'years; later for a solution. Eve CANNOT cope as it should with the player base it has now. So adding a few more thousand perhaps more to the game is just going to make things worse. And once the new players see this problem, they will disappear as they have been (anyone noticed that the playerbase hasnt really increased as much as it has before)
Eve will have a very Niche market and will never have millions of players, firstly for a beginner the heavy loss factor with heavy expense for items crossed with effort to get these seriously turns people off. To be pretty damn decent at this game takes at least 2 years, ppl dont want that, not the general gamer anyway.
Anyway my point is before you get more people ensure your marketing a stable lagless game, or it will be for nothing.
Me personally ill prob play eve for years, just because ive invested too much time and money into it. Newbies i think say have a month lifespan whether to continue or not.
You're not being forced to use steam, it'll only be a way of acquiring an account for new players.
Yes, this has to do with marketing, it is marketings job to get new players to join EVE.
In fact i'm glad you're doing it, cause more players = more server load = more crashes = more incentive for CCP to fix it.
I can see this being hugely benifitial to eve in the long run in the form of more public visibility, widening the eve community base, that and CCP is a buisness what more can I say.
Short term however I'm a little skeptical, when eve is finally accessable through steam there will be a huge influx of new player, (probably right into the heart of jita) wich would probably effect server performance in some negative way (more lag). That and I have some serious personal steam issues myself but thats beside the point.
Well good luck CCP, and good move to bring fresh blood into eve
Quite frankly it couldn't be any worse than the myriad of crap posting that infests our boards now. I mean for crying out loud, somebody first post sniped this thread, that nobody moderates our crap like that here is beyond me. This forum used to be something, but it's really gone to seed with the same boring whines day in and day out, by the same tired bunch of people pushing their respective agendas.
Will a trial account only be available through Steam or CCP will still be offering trial accounts directly in conjunction with Steam?
In the beginning Steam sucked but by now it works very well.
I hope CCP focusses on server speed though and does not spend all it's energy on marketting their toy. Lag has been awful for the last week and if the plan is to get more people to play EVE , then this issue should be adressed urgently. I fear failure to do so might result in less players ...
