I hate steam. It's just spyware in my opinion. I hate being spied on it offends me. Like others in this thread if the day ever came when I have to use steam to play EVE then I'd quit the game.
I bought Lost Planet. To play online you have to go through steam which made it very difficult to join games or host a game. Not to mention that steam is spying on your game the whole time taking statistical data from you. I found it combative and devious at the very least.

let me preface this by saying first that i have not used steam for 3.5 years.
that said, CS going exclusively to steam is what drove me to eve. When i first got it, it sucked horribly. It crashed my computer, wouldn't load games half the time and was just a general nightmare.
For the love of god (read eve) don't do this. That is, unless they've fixed it... but still, why?

I'm perfectly fine with this move as long as I NEVER have to interact with, launch, or see Steam in order to play Eve. I want to be able to click on my EVE icon or .exe and not have to put up with Steam's crap. It is the number one reason I never touch my Orange Box games and I'm pretty upset that nowhere on the box does it say Steam. You just go to install it and *surprise* there it is. "Sorry, you need to install and use this worthlessly coded pile of **** to play your offline games." Thanks. I appreciate that.
I don't care about the community. If they like Eve, that's great. If they don't, fine. Take the people, leave the program.

wow.....simply wow
it's truly shocking how many of you can not read;
- Patches will be deployed as usual and not through Steam, no one is required to sign up to EVE Online through Steam.
- Steam will be selling CD Keys only. This means you can buy a new account on Steam, but not pay subscription.
no where does it say you need steam to play eve, plus why on earth would you think think they want us players already playing to download a whole new eve through steam?
ccp are doing the correct thing here, advertising their product through a system which reaches to millions
fair play and bring on the new targets for the old ones here seem to rather like b*tching about the old days and sitting in their stations ******************************************

- Anyone on a trial can take advantage of this offer and can upgrade their trial account with the CD Keys Steam will be selling.
- Anyone can also get a Steam account and take advantage of the 21 day trial offered by Steam.

Roflmao, ive already got my own steam account in order to play CS, how many people here have a steam account i wonder? cool move
but one question, if we add friends on eve, and if they have a steam account, will it automatically add them to our steam f list? or will we have to add them manualy?

Ok lets make this VERY CLEAR for all the people making pointless panic.
The steam promotion is ONLY TO GET MORE PLAYERS
You DO NOT have to use steam
Steam will only facilitate the opening of the account, there will be no special 'steam' version of eve.
If steam does download eve and puts a icon into your My games list, it is simply putting a shortcut to a non steam game there. I have done this with nearly every game I own including eve already and all it does it make a shortcut to launch the application. Just like a shortcut on your desktop.

i've been launching eve from steam since the say i started... i just added a shortcut. who cares if a lot of kids use steam, a lot of kids use the internet already and eve's been readily available to them. the game is still overwhelming at first and 99% of them will give up before they even get started with the tutorial. what i would like to know is if existing users will get a key so we can use eve with steam just like the new users who will have a choice which we did not get. it'll just be one less game i have to go out and download and update after formatting. also will the steam chat and friends list be compatible with eve at all? o_O |

Ok at first I thought you understood, but like many other people learn to read before you post. My previous posts quite clearly explain and ccp's own post clear explain that steam WILL ONLY BE FOR STARTING THE ACCOUNT. EVE IS COMPLETELY SEPERATE.

Steam is a terrible evil, and EvE should be kept as far away as possible. It's instability and advertisements make me wish I had bought game CDs instead of the files from Steam.
At least EvE is just AVAILABLE through Steam and will not run through it.

Oh dear god. You must of tried to download a hacked version full of virus's then. There is pretty much no instability, it will 99.9999% of the time be a driver conflict, go to your windows logs and it will show all. There ARE NO ADVERTISMENTS. If you are refering to the page that comes up when a new product is availible on steam, YOU CAN DISABLE THIS FROM THE OPTIONS MENU.
No spyware, no nothing from steam. Its safe and secure, stop living off rumors.

I refuse to play Eve is we need to log in to Steam first. The last time I did that Nargles stole all the meat from my fridge. I have proof too! Well, I did, but the Nargles stole it when they came back later and stole one of each of my socks. Now I have to buy new ones because they don't match!
Honest. It's true.

This is just going to stuff more people into a game that is already straining the hardware. Obviously a company must try to increase profits but this can't do anything except make the experience worse for everyone. I'm guessing that 5-20k additional trial accounts struggling to logon will be a bad situation.

I agree.
I don't really have a problem with kids playing, honestly. The only thing I dislike about kids playing would be the ones who feel the need to: 1) Try to make death threats in local to look like they are "badass" 2) Try to make "your mother" jokes in local 3) Shorten *everything* (u = you, y = why, etc) <- Just a personal issue I have, I can't stand that. 4) Make threats in game then back out after crap talking for 20 minutes in local about how they are going to kill/pod you, then they "Let you off this time". 5) Don't use periods / commas / etc.
Yes, long and pointless post, but whatever.
As for steam, I don't *mind*, personally, I am not going to use it, since it's not required (Reading Comprehension FTW, people?).
edit: And yea, I hope they implement something to fix the lag, or else the extra characters in game will pose more of a problem (If it even gets enough people to make a noticeable difference.)

Why is everyone crying over "spyware" in steam? To my knowledge it only checks for cheats that can be used with the games, so its a good thing.
Then why are people moaning about their own personal experiences with steam, when in reality steam is great and offers a good service to most people.

I have been a Steam user for years, playing HL, HL2, DOD, CS, CS:S, etc. Steam rocks! You only need your user ID and PW to restore all the games you own via STEAM. Valve has done a wonderful job with this distribution platform.
You can purchase games via Steam, restore previously bought games, connect with friends, take advantage of game sales, etc.
On the marketing aspect of it, Millions of gamers will be introduced to our game and get a 21 day trial. What is not to like? Eve prospers, we get an influx of new pilots who need ships, fittings, corps, etc.
To those whining, do some research. This is the best thing to happen to our game. If new blood is not injected on a regular basis, the game will slowly die...
Steam has millions of gamers that are already registered and use it daily to chat, launch and buy games, etc. With this new partnership, Eve is fixing to explode.
I for one look forward to it!!!

By your own admission, you have not used Steam for 3.5+ years. why would you post this? Many software distributors offer games on Steam, usually at discounts. It is not spy ware and never has been. Those throwing that out there have no clue.
CCP is making a marketing move, nothing more. They gain access to millions of gamers that use Steam daily and have no problems. What is the big deal?

Wanted to add, those that thing Steam is full of kids only.... LOL.... I have been playing Valve games for years and you are far off target. They ran a poll once where it was disclosed that more then 70% of the player base is of voting age at least.
And why does age matter anyways? Money is money. I'm sure if anyone leaves the game over this, we will not miss you, as many will take your place. This move insures the game we love gets more exposure.
I do however hope that CCP has plans to insure that the sole server doesn't falter with 50k-150k new accounts after the initial Steam release....

Reason why people (like me!) don't like steam is that it's useless program taking needlessly my bandwith and hard drive space for no good reason or whatsoever.
In addition to all that goodness it also "automatically" loads every kind of crap like advertisements.
As long as I don't have to touch that devil's work I'm fine.
