Does this mean we get also support for steam overlay (that nice instant messaging with friends, etc) in-game?

Your knowledge seems to have missed that Steam is spyware. There's no way for users to know which data they do gather since they don't disclose this publicly. That won't be an issue since we won't have to run Eve through Steam.
The issue that remains, though, is that lag will increase. All people in this thread defending the Steam move so fervently fail to address that concern. It's just so much easier to say "read the thread, noob, Steam will not be mandatory".

Steam hardly uses any bandwidth when not updating/downloading and only a few MB of RAM. I really don't see the problem, you dont have to run it all the time. I for one only run it when i want to play any of its games..for the rest, it stays down.

Steam overlay already works in any game you own. Or at least 99% of them.
People whining and crying about "I'm going to cancel if I have to use Steam LOL!#%!#" are incredibly naive, to be honest. Steam had a rocky start, but most PC gamers nowadays can tell you their quality of service is unparalleled in the industry. No other service allows me to have an entire library of games that I can automatically download and install on demand any time I want, as many times as I want. On top of that, it auto updates all the games for me, makes finding my friends in multiplayer and joining them easier than most/all other services, and on top of that it doesn't spam you with ads or try to take over your computer like many of the other programs most of you use. It *****s me up when people complain about Steam, yet their computer is full of crap like AOL Instant Messenger, MSN or Yahoo's spyware and IM bullcrap, Itunes and all its' bloated idiocy, etc.
I could spend another three paragraphs explaining all the stuff that's awesome about Steam. Shut your whining about something you obviously know nothing about. 99% of people who cry about Steam are blatantly misinformed about some aspect of it or another, I've found. Once you explain to them that it's not a spyware laden game ruining piece of software, and that it actually does a lot of really cool stuff, they usually shut their trap and realize how cool it is. How many of you complainers are Xbox owners who're forking over dollars every month for Microsoft's laughable Xbox Live service? They force you to pay for it, and it does half of what Steam does. But again, people think XBL is great, but they'll crap on Steam...
Right.
Making Eve available via Steam is an excellent idea. I agree with people that say the Eve universe needs to be greatly expanded to accommodate the players we already have, let alone any influx that Steam may generate. However, more players = more money for CCP = more cool stuff being added to Eve. I hope.

OMW, get over the Steam "complex" already. I'm not worried about Steam causing lag. I won't have to use it anyway. Steam can use 99.9% of your bandwidth, and it wouldn't bother me the slightest bit.
Increased player growth will make the current lag problems even worse. More players, that's one of the major benefits for CCP using Steam to distribute the game.

I completely agree with this. Especially as I'm a software developer and I understand a lot of code and stuff that is behind EVE and Steam. Most of the people whining are terribly misinformed about Steam and similar applications. Related to the "Steam is spyware" stuff I wouldn't agree here. People should read their policies and licenses before saying anything like this. Also if we think like this ANY MMO game can by spyware as nobody has no idea what they are sending to the manufacturer. And DirectX itself reveals a lot to the game. Even if Steam does collect data on what games and how much I play them it can be only useful, as they will (hopefully) deliver more games that are like the most popular ones.
As per lag EVE would get new players be it on Steam or not. Steam has a smart engine that is not updating or using any bandwith if you're playing any game over the Internet. People are always whining over lag but I can say it got a bit better lately though it needs a lot of fixing still. But again, take a moment and think about this: EVE Online is the ONLY game with over 36,000 players playing at the same time on ONE server. No other game supports it and there is an unbelievable amount of operations per player done on the servers. I can say that 99% of players does not understand the pain and problems of server clusters and farms that NOBODY can easily fix. CCP is breaking the ice all the time and you should be happy that we're not on 3k players clusters where 2900 of them are so called "carebears".

Well, seems to me that there are as many people whining about people whining as people whining
The whining in my opinion is good. This shows that there are those who don't want added unnecessary game spyware running while your playing a game. I understand Eve Online's interaction with steam at this time will have no effect on me. However once steam's hooks get in Eve there is a potential for a more symbiotic relationship than what is presently Planned. I for one would be very disappointed to see that happen.
Seems like there are some on here who are passionate about defending steam. I often wonder about people who are offended by negative statements about a product or service. Like they're sponsored by the service or employees of the company.

I again agree with you here but negative statements should be more than "I hate it just because I hate it." or "I hate it because someone else told me something.". It's very bad and statements that has no real thing behind them (proof of Steam being spyware?) or stuff that happens for one person out of 10000 (EVE slow while Steam is running?) does not make a product bad. I understand that everyone has the right to sound his/her opinion but at least make it meaningful a bit more than "I hate Steam because it's full of kids!". :)

I'm kind of worried about attracting the same kind of crowd Counter-Strike generally attracts. FYI I play Counter-Strike a lot.
When I play CS I play on many servers and I spot at least 1 cheaters every 2 hour session. If there aren't cheaters and if it is a regular map everyone just buys an AK or a AWP and camps with it.
I really don't think EVE needs more people who play to win and uber. I imagine logoffski problem increasing dramatically not to mention the whining when people can't get the AWP equiv (dd device) straight away..
Oh, and generally they whine just a little too much. If you are good you are a cheater.
Imagine it:
Quote: Now entering Ennur system. kIT`xRad`89 > wtf how u kill me ?? unnamed > lol better than u nub Jonno666 > l2p fgt kIT`xRad`89 > sending demo to valve
I guess I rest easy knowing that EVE restricts names to sensible lengths, alpha-numeric with only one space and a few back-ticks. charmap.exe names in CS are really, really annoying.

Good point here but you made one mistake. Cheating in EVE is not so easy as in CSS as everything (except drawing the graphics) is done on the server, while most of the stuff in CSS is done on the client machine. There is just no technical possibility for "wallhacks" and stuff like that in EVE.
As for the rest - it's all here already, the whining, the logoffski, and "I will tell my mum you podded me.." and we can't do nothing against it, except make their life in EVE even harder by not showing any mercy..

Technically possible cheats for EVE-Online:
- Macro Mining
- Macro Belt-ratting
- Macro Missioning
- Warp-to-zero Autopilot
I'm sure more exist.

Instead of 1 person in every 10 logging off, it might be 5 in 10 or even higher. That will be great. Whining is fine, it has nothing to do with the game, but metagaming does..

Technically they are not cheats or hacks. They are pure macros that click on screen instead of you. I wouldn't go so far and say it's cheating and you can do it in any game. And I hate it and do not approve it to be honest.. :)

Two things.
Reading "Windows Game Programming For Dummies" doesn't really make you a software developer. You sound like one of those types.
You can't prove that Steam is transmitting sensible data because you can't control what they are transmitting and storing. Fact is, they are gathering data in a big way. Whether you trust them to only do good things that'll save the world is up to you. I don't.

They are cheats because they circumvent the rules of the game. They allow people with these "hacks" to do things that people without them cannot, against the rules remind you. That makes it cheating. You know, breaking the rules to get an advantage over others.
They are hacks, sure, a lot of them are simple repetition macro programs but some are not. Although, one could argue regardless of the methodology used (reverse engineering vs predicting responses..) they are "hacked" on top of the game.
It sounds like you are try to make macros seem more innocent. faction loot ║ http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=683091affordable hosting[/url |

Vargo knows what he is talking about, because he: a) works for Valve and has read the entire source tree (and understands it) b) has reverse engineered all of the Steam executables, and any updates (which could very well be removed at the next update) c) has intercepted and decrypted all of Steam's encrypted traffic (and understands it)

So why would CCP bother with Steam? I don't think EVE is the focus of this move - the more likely reason is for the distribution of new titles: namely the World Of Darkness MMO under development by CCP/White Wolf.
Using an established title (i.e EVE) as a test bed for the deployment of an MMO through Steam prior to deploying a new title makes perfect sense to me.
C.
I will have to agree with this...WTH does steam have to do with EvE?
Frankly it doesn't, there's not much advantage of installing this as updates have been just fine (if i recall ccp just designed a new system to give updates ie. premium graphics) so w/ that said what does steam do for eve....publicity?...thats a good question.
I think steam is bogus and unnecessary.
