I've been wanting to diversify my experiences in EVE since I've started playing again. One of the areas I've found to be fascinating is the Market Discussion forums. I've made it a daily habit to read this forum and read up on the latest threads. I enjoy reading the new IPO's and other offers being made and I try to learn from those who have more experience.
My problem is that I have no experience in this. How does this all work? I see something like THIS and want to get involved with my meager wallet where my money is just sitting there tempting me to buy stuff I don't need.
Is there a guide somewhere to help us first timers pop our financial cherrys? I've searched the various forums but have not found anything detailing any processes for the whole shares / stocks / dividends market.
I'm fairly conservative and an initial negative experience would probably kill my desire to further participate.
Looking for some advice or pointers! |

Really every IPO is different. Generally though you just send money to the person running the IPO and they send you shares. You then get paid monthly a percentage that was agreed upon at the start of the IPO. This is either fixed or variable depending on the IPO.
If you are very risk adverse then this is not the thing for you. IPO's do result in failure / scam sometimes. You have to judge who is trustworthy and who is not and invest accordingly.
If you value your money very highly and cannot afford to lose it then do not invest. You have to treat any investment as though it will be a loss and you have to be OK with that. If not then investing is not for you.

Thanks for the reply. I take it the payment part of the equation is automated to some extent from the person running the IPO side? Also I assume this works similar with the in-game stock markets?
I guess my statement of conservatism was a little over done. I meant it more along the lines of I'd be less inclined to continue market ventures if my initial foray was a bust. I'd prefer to ask for additional information before jumping in and getting my feet wet. Hence the initial post.
Thanks again!

There is not much automation to the process unfortunately.
You send the person money and you trust he will send you shares and then you trust he will be pay dividends each month (or however the IPO is structured).
There is no in-game stock market. There are stocks in game, but there is no actual stock market built into the game unfortunately. It would be very nice if there was.

Edited by: Shaida on 30/01/2008 21:20:25 Yea, Stock Market was the wrong wording. I actually meant the Exchanges at EGSE and RESX. I assume the process is somewhat the same if I were to buy Shares via one of those. Although I assume there would be a 3rd party acting as a medium in the exchanges case. I would send isk to the middle person at the exchange, they would send isk to the owner of the shares, who would then send me the shares?
Again, thanks for taking time out to answer my questions.

You are correct, the stock exchanges act as the middle men. The broker would be the ones sending you the shares as far as I know.
