Everyone's used to seeing threads and blogs from Tuxford with changes and nerfs, enough to the point that simply seeing his name strikes fear into the most hard core EVE player.
Tuxford is taking a break from swinging the nerf bat this time around and actually talking about a buff. No, it's not a change to ships or modules, but the UI this time and more specifically Overview and EWAR filtering. So the changes are related to PvP after all.
If you want to see what the changes are and a couple pictures while you're at it, read WHO'S JAMMING ME!!!. Then get ready to make a couple Overview setting changes.

Edited by: Frug on 07/02/2008 00:19:55 This is good news for a change. Hard to argue with improvements to the UI.
The bracket filters are something I've wished eve had for a long time. Its such a pretty game. Finally a way to play effectively and still see the graphics from under the HUD.
Now how about a way to make the module buttons opaque?

Cool, a dev blog of pure win.
You don't need to worry about this one getting a bad reception Tux (although I'm sure someone will find something to whine about!).
Fantastic changes that have been needed for a long time!

Do I understand the idea of the one picture with the wrecks were you can chose to turn them off on the screen and not just overview?

Nice features!
I hope the bracket filter works on planets, stations, belts and stargates too... Will be much easier to locate stuff in space.
Finally we can see all the effects applied on the ship on one quick glance!
And then on top of all this we get tabs on overviews? That sure sounds like a lot of feature coming in one patch. Just the stuff what we have been asking for years.
Better later than never? Thanks devs!

Tabs are good as well as (no) brackets but the EW thing is "WTF you want that for?!" And isnt there already notification on who's doing what today? At least for the EW stuff. Wanting to know who is scrambling you could be great but imo its just another step towards making EVE run in easy-mode.
Its gonna be two things anyway, in PvP that is, you either have a few ships against you, you are somewhat lucky and are in a strong ship hence it wont matter who's scrambling you, just kill everyone and your home free!
The other way would be that you are still in your strong ship but the 23 other guys around you are also in strong ships and they all have scramblers. Its not going to require Rocket Science Level 5 to figure out that you are screwed! Much less a scanner taunting you about it.
Anyway, its *******s for several reasons more than just being another way to make the game run in easy-mode (I do howewer think that it would be sort of ok if it ONLY showed what NPC's were doing).
Second; more icons? Like the overview isnt bugged, slow and lagging as it is? Third; more icons, more calculations, more lag. (Yes, two and three are almost the same but need emphasizing! )
Ok, it can be turned off but you can bet your ass some punk ***** is gonna have it turned on and make a sunday roast out of your Scorp/falcon/rook/other ew ship even faster than is happening right now. And tbh, that would mean I will explode as soon as I undock, 23 jumps from the fight that so far havent even been thought of yet.
The EW needs a big boost though, but that aint gonna happen coz OMG what if the EW ships actually was good at what they are supposed to do!? That would be...correct. And we cant have that now can we?
/Lowa - Sorry, was feeling ranty. Im right though.

I like the changes to the overview, and particularly the tabs for easy setting switching. Also, I like the removal of wrecks from the screen.
In an effort to reduce lag and grid-load.... would it be possible to:
1. Have an bracket setting that removes drones and fighters from your screen... allowing for faster grid loads and reducing the meta-gaming tactic of lagging out combatants trying to load a grid for combat.
2. Allow the bright flash of Citadel torpedoes to be turned off with the other "Effects" and "Turret Effects", reducing screen lag while sieging a POS.
All around, great blog!

Looks good, great steps of progress, imo, but I have two quick questions.
1.) Is it correct to assume that the EWAR notifications is a new Column on the overview?
2.) Will the ability to use HotKeys to quickly switch between tabbed overview types be possible? --

Sure, there's notification for the EWAR - it's onscreen for like 1/3 of a second before being replaced with damage. I agree that this moves towards easy-mode - but I still like it.

Extra helpful for piracy tho - "OK, so you're screwed. See the little thingy in your overview? That means you can't get away. Pay me iskies."
Finally - is it just me or are the tabs/brackets a "gotta see to understand" concept? Sisi here I come.

It's just you. It's like browser tabs... you can click another tab and have overview with different settings. And the brackets (if I understood it correctly that is) means just all the icons you see in space... like wreck icon. You can select which ones you want to see.

1) Yes 2) I sure hope we get some lovely hotkeys for this

Edited by: XoPhyte on 07/02/2008 02:41:38 Fantastic! I know the ewar notifications were talked about long ago, happy to see them implemented.
Couple of questions (for those that have experienced this on sisi can comment as well).
1). The EWAR notifications. You say the types are aggregated. So I assume that if 1 person jams, scrams & webs you, then you will have 3 distinct icons showing up for that hostile?
2). The brackets. One of the biggest problems in fleet battles is the reload of the wrecks that will ocur during fleet battle. Then the god awful lag that occurs when all these icons are visible on the screen (client lag). Removing the brackets would eliminate this .
The real question though is... does limiting the brackets also reduce the amount of information that is sent from the servers to the client, therefore possibly reducing lag? (communication lag waiting for the download of the grid to complete) or would the entire "grid load" communications streem still occur. I assume the later, however if it reduced the actual grid load stream then this would also dramatically help gridloads, which would be very beneficial for the enemy which warps or jumps into a hostile fleet.
Thank you again for these changes.

It would be good if u could change the priority of listing of these aswell. IE if u sort by EWAR subtab then have it so Warp Scramblers on top, then sensor dampening or whatever. If u could modify that it would make calling primary even easier.
About time the EWAR people got called primary more easily.
That is all...
