It might seem difficult to find a downside to these changes, but I can envision at least one necessary tactical change due to this.
Some ships are fitted with not quite enough cap to run the scrambler full time. Some players pulse their scrambler hoping that the target won't notice for the few seconds it's off. However with this new change, the target will be able to immediately see the pulse and be able to warp away. In practice it remains to be seen whether this actually happens. -- Forum Illiterate

Not a very big issue...if you ever want to escape...you spam your warp button. |

My only worry is that some of us with less screen space than others (ie me) are running out of space to the point the overview covers half the screen, the chat channels the 1/3 opposite, and the UI and targets a slice off the top and bottom. With the new changes its getting a little ridiculous(see screeny:http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3776/20080207161027ds6.jpg)
On that note, we need a way to break targets onto multiple lines.

+1 to EWAR icons and bracket filters. A couple of suggestions:
ALT and ALT-Z functionality
Why don't you allow us to select which brackets we want to see for any particular overview setting with ALT, and have ALT-Z show all? This allows me to have ALT show all stations and gates on one overview, all wrecks on another, all planets on a different one, depending one what I'm doing.
Filter on Ownership
I really want to be able to filter some things on ownership, namely cans. I don't care about everyone else's cans, especially secure cans. I just want my own cans, or my corps cans.
Looking forward to the overview enhancements!

Nice blog, nice additions to EVE UI!
Another good addition to the overview would be the "freeze update" function to be triggered by pressing ctrl and mousing over the overview. Would be very usefull during large fleet battles.
Will we ever have some kind of real and usefull coordinate system with heading numbers? Something that can be used to direct the gang movements instead of telling everyone to "allign a little to the left of planet V". ...

This is one of the best overview changes I've seen. Nice idea's, and can't wait to see them implemented. So many times in fleet battles I've wondered what was happening to me, who was jamming, who had a point on me, ect. Now that can easily be determined. And I love the tab idea's. Great improvements!

a setting that removes ships from the overview "who are not at war with me" would be nice, to keep from shooting neutrals in high sec.
Altough the voices in my head aren't real, they have some pretty good ideas.

Very cool. Dev blogs full of win make my day!
A question and a request:
Question: How does the notification handle ECM drones? Are they displayed next to the drones themselves, or by the pilot who is controlling them?
Request: Can this be implemented in the Fleet window to show buff effects such as remote repping and boosting as well?

I like the proposed changes to the the overview as described. They will make it alot easier when it comes to popping the tacklers. But what is going on wih the bugs that keep me from being able to run both my clients at the same time? A comment from the bug hunters would be a welcome sight to see.

Is there any chance the "CTRL pressed: stop sorting overview. CTRL released: sort overview and continue sorting as normally" feature can make it in?

Well the client still needs information about various stuff as for the stuff that manages brackets then its not getting any updates on stuff its not interested in. There were really two ways to do this, this way where we just throw the brackets we're not interested in or keep everything and just hide the ones we're not interested in. There are pros and cons with both ways.
Biggest benefit of not keeping any information about brackets we're not interested in can actually boost fps (up to over 20% in cases where there are lots of items in your vicinity and you're zoomed out a bit so you have lighter version of the models. Biggest drawback however is that when you load all the brackets back you get a little lag spike that can vary from part of a second up to 2-3 depending on number brackets that need to be added and hardware.
Of course since it can take a while to add the brackets we can't have <alt> showing all brackets like before so we changed it so that <alt>-z toggles [show all brackets]. You however can bind it to what combination you think is fitting.
This will allow us the player to determine exactly WHEN we want that lag spike to occur though (to some degree anyway ). This is a great change.

Ok little comment about the ctrl to freeze overview. This is one of those ideas which when you hear it you go "oh man why didn't I think of that". Well we did but it came kind of late so it won't come with these UI changes but we have the lead gamedesigner pushing for this and it isn't complex to do. _______________ |

This is awesome.
I was thinkin (a rare occurence) how EVE looks an amazing universe, except for all the clutter -brackets as you call them- being able to set up and customize the overview is pure win.
Apply a liberal coating of the new 'boosty tux' to the pilgrim and you'll get a shiny gold star!

I was gonna tell you that there is no excess information is being transferred between server and client but that's not strictly speaking true. It is however very minimal. _______________ |

Originally by: Marius Deterium Allow us to "approach" things not on grid. I am sick of having to do the mad gate finding scramble to be able to align to my next gate. I should be able to press a button to align.
If I remember correctly, this was actually in game somewhere around three years ago, and I think it stopped working when the overview was introduced. I can't think of a reason why it was removed, since it was really helpful in gang combat.
As for the EW notifications, how bout a sexy addition to the Tactical Overlay as well? A simple colored line from EW ship A to Player ship B might be kinda nice for people who don't use the overview. Might need vector lines to allow a little curve so as to avoid confusion with energy weapons, and to show which direction the EW is going (downward curve, incoming, upward curve, outgoing, whatever). The engine is already capable of point-to-point non-sprite lines (as seen when you click another object while using the TO).
Something cool like that might eventually get some sort of gang coordination module/rig, allowing the boss to see the EW lines of his/her entire gang, and call actions accordingly... which could eventually evolve into the Ambulation fleet control room (hint hint ). |
