Originally by: Tintifish My only worry is that some of us with less screen space than others (ie me) are running out of space to the point the overview covers half the screen, the chat channels the 1/3 opposite, and the UI and targets a slice off the top and bottom. With the new changes its getting a little ridiculous(see screeny:http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3776/20080207161027ds6.jpg)
On that note, we need a way to break targets onto multiple lines.
Well thats why you have the tabs. Try breaking up the information that is displayed.
As I saw it on sisi a day or two ago, tabs are great for reducing the _length_ of information in the overview (rows), but since columns are set independently of overview settings, it is very difficult to adjust the required _width_ of the overview without defeating the purpose of some overview settings some of the time. For example, I don't care too much about ship type or corp or alliance when I'm missioning, but these settings are critical to PVP overview settings which I might need if someone warps into my mission, or when I travel to/from the station. There are many situations like this, but I think you get the idea. I find that in order for the overview to stay at a manageable width, I just need to go without the not-quite-critical columns for most settings while every setting also has useless columns (I also shrink colunms to their minimally useful width, eg, 4-digit distances, names longer than about 15 characters, the right bracket on corp names, etc... all get cut off).
I think there is probably an argument for a situation where each of the possible overview columns has a lot of value. However, I don't think anyone has the screen space to view all columns, so we all need to make these trade-offs (there are only a few limited situations where reconfiguring columns on the fly is feasible). Including the column settings with the saved overview settings would let every setting use the columns that best suit the purpose of that setting, and tabs only amplify the benefit this change would provide.
Oh yeah, the improvements you've made so far are fantastic... keep them coming :)

Great. Hope this makes it into the game ASAP. One thing though, can you do the same thing for orbit and keep at distances? Would love not to have to go and change all these each time I change ship types (so that I can for example have orbital distances set for optimum DPS of each weapon type I can use).

Great improvement, I've lost count of the time I wanted to know who was scrambling me. My criticism would be, only one EW icon is displayed when a single pilot is using several forms of EW. I appreciate that displaying multiple icons per ship might clutter the overview. How about adding some 'up' and 'down' buttons to allow the pilot to prioritize EW effect?

Edited by: Parhelion on 07/02/2008 23:52:36 It may be worthwhile doing something similar for drones.
Currently, drones account for significant portion of client side lag, especially when loading grid. There is practically no point in rendering the drones or at least rendering the drone 'brackets' on the client - it isn't usually possible to target drones by clicking on them in space as they move too quickly.
Some ideas:
* Remove drone brackets from space. * Put drones in overview similar to the new EWAR icons so that one can see whether drones are attacking or not. * Provide a means to target drones instead of clicking on them in space or using the overview. Turning on drones in overview is usually a bad idea because there can be a large number of them.
I suggest another way to target drones, when a target ship is locked up and appears on the top portion of the screen, provide an option there, either visual or by right click context menu to target their drones. This could either be a right-click list of drones with an option to target each, or a visual list of icons below the locked target which can be clicked on directly to target the particular drone.
Taking this a bit further as part of your 'Need for speed' initiative, maybe it's possible to remove drones entirely and regard them simply as a 'weapon effect' so that the server doesn't need to track potentially hundreds of drones on a grid and keep this information synced to all clients on grid.
Anyway, these are just some ideas I had. Bottom line is, please do something about the drone lag.
Thanks.

A good way to deal with the overview and braket filtering for ships targeting you/shooting you would be the same mechanic used for broadcasting.
Just have a "bring to top" option for objects targeting and then have a priority menu for which things you want at the very top.
Allowing different "bring to top" options for each overview would give a really easy way to sort information for things targeting you, shooting you, etc.
Also, please give us the option to turn off brakets in the first overview tab. Its kind-of annoying that if i dont want to look at brackets i cant actually use that first overview tab.

it's about time tbh great change
while you're at it: please save them somewhere (on the server?) where they don't get lost after reinstall and especially after a patch... this is very annoying... i can't count how often i've re-set my overview settings just to loose them weeks later

I very much approve of all of this - bracket filtering, and ewar notifications.
I mean, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that if there's an inty attacking you, he's probably got a scram on. But what about that HAC, is he helping?
Looking forward to these changes. ___________________________________

IDEA:
I don't know what's your stance on modding UI, but here goes. How about an xml file in your eve settings folder that would configure what and how overview is supposed to show (and load)? For example: <stargates sort="byname" sortorder="ascending/> <ships> <belongtocorp>Bobbits</corp> <belongtocorp>Rabbits</corp< <notbelongtocorp>All</notbelongtocorp> </ships>
You get the idea, right? This way one could easly use an api to pull the list of wars, generate ui filter, distribute to all alliance members and there, everyone has a convinient filter especially for empire wars.

Premium stuff, this. Once this makes it in, my primary annoyance with EVE (apart from my computer being too small and slow) will be gone. Hope this gets patched in once it's ready, and not finished but put off to some bigger, down-the-line patch.
The EWAR upgrade is also made of pure win. The brackets don't usually bug me so much, but if it can reduce lag a bit, I'm all for it. I practically never use brackets for anything, certainly not targeting, except for the times when I need to warp away ASAP and just align with the closest thing in front of me.

Seeing that you're going to be more explicit on who's aggressing who and with what... can you make the aggression indicator visible, please?
Right now, I'm arguing on a petition as my ship was destroyed while logged off with aggression, but my logs don't show anything beyond the 15min timer and neither do the server logs... I find that the game is lacking in this particular matter.
Having the aggression indicator visible might avoid some problems.
Thank you for looking into this matter.

I can't seem to get the warp scrambling, webbing or the tracking disruption icons to show.
And the rest of the icons that does show up are placed on top of each other.
The backet filtering also seems buggy as it doesn't change anything when I apply/show all (it does work if I create a new tab and then use the right-click menu 'Change bracket settings')
It would be nice if you could just right-click on the bracket in space and select show/hide bracket. Just like you can with show/hide on the overview.
Finally, the term backet doesn't make much sense other when applied to the player ships which could look like brackets. Just call them icons, which is what their column is named in the overview. (no!!!, do NOT rename the overview column :-)

Originally by: CCP Tuxford Biggest drawback however is that when you load all the brackets back you get a little lag spike that can vary from part of a second up to 2-3 depending on number brackets that need to be added and hardware.
When you say lag spike is that just for the person loading the brackets. /me envisions people pressing the show and hide brackets button time and time again to lag someone else out.
Sorry if someone else already asked this but I was just lazy and didn't want to read all the posts.

Sounds like good stuff so far, so keep up the good work.
Suggestions: 1) If you are going to notify the target of who is jamming him/her and to what degree, then the one using the ewar needs to know how effective it is against the target as well. This goes into a whole realm of EWAR notifications that imho should be supplied to the ewar user. I'm not sure if you're more focused on the EWAR or the overview, but I'd encourage you to at least get some of the needed EWAR notification done while you're on the current project.

A great addition to the new overview would be an overhaul of the logic behind what appears does not appear. Sometimes, the logic can be a bit cumbersome.
Current Example: EX1: Checking "Show Wartargets" but not having the ship types selected will show nothing.
EX2: Stargates won't show if neutral objects aren't checked.
Each field (stargate, moon, frigate, wartarget etc..) that is possible for the overview to display should have three columns after it. To change overview settings, one of the columns would be checked for each item.
These columns would allow players to modify the display logic. The columns are "Display", "Neutral", "Do not Display" "Display" and "Do not Display" would function like the check marks now, and use the same logic. "Neutral" will only display if included as part of the "Display" item.
Possible uses:
Fixes the stargates don't display because neutral isn't checked bug.
Check "Show Wartargets" as Display. Everything else as neutral. Now all wartargets will display. Nothing else will.
Check "Show Negative SecStatus" as display. Select "Show Gangmembers" as Do not Display. Everything else as neutral. The overview will only show negative sec status people, but will not show your gangmembers that have negative sec status.
This logic will let the overview be a much more flexible and useful filter, and combined with the new tabs, give pilots much more control over the information at their fingertips. --------------------------------- The Seven- Blowing up someone near you. |

Wouldn't this be a change in combat mechanics? My understanding is that currently, you do get a notice of who's jamming you, but it disappears too quickly in the gun spam. The change announced by Tuxford would thus only change how you get notified, not whether you get a notification.
Wouldn't notifying the attacker of the effectiveness of the module be adding a new game element? If you jam someone, do you currently get any notification of whether or not it's working?

And a reason why my hyper advanced futuristic ship can't tell me who is doing bad stuff to me to keep me in place would be what exactly?
It's hardly easy mode, it's adding pertinent and very important info that should have been there ages ago.
