seems a bit pointless to me, if someone intends on going afk and doesn't say so in the chat, its either not an important chat or its his fault for not saying so.
So not really needed.

Thumbs up, AFK Tag is nice to have and common in 99% of all other MMOGs

If you do nothing for more than 5 minutes you should get an auto AFK tag just like WoW, and if you are afk for more than 10 minutes you get booted from the server. This would help reduce server load as well as prevent people from afk cloaking and other common mechanic abuses.
Back in 1985 the text based MUDs I played had afk flags. It is pathehtic that Eve does not.

Hell no . If I set my ship to travel 30 jumps on autopilot, I don't want to relog every 10 minutes to make it resume. Also, with my alt boosting me through mission, i don't want her to be thrown out all of the sudden. Especially since "all of the sudden" will be at peak incomming DPS.
If there should be an AFK tag, it should be enabled by the pilot himself, not timer based.

If there is an AFK tag, it needs to be something the player chooses to set on them selves. The only channels that really need it are alliance and corp. Although allowing the player to set it on the channels they choose would be nice. Setting it on local of course would be useless as it'll be bait or just a dumb thing for a player to do.

Well of course people who abuse being afk would not want it changed, but for the majority of players, specially those active in game who have to deal with lag because they are in fact at their computer playing the game, we would be the ones who want you booted out of the game for afking around.

Seem the perfect ganker tool: "Look that guy is afk, we go an kill him".
Some simple mechanic that don't work well with your idea:
- mining - moving several systems afk in high sec - staying cloaked anywhere (whatever the whiner say, someone cloaked in your system has no need to push any button, especially if he is there to see what the traffic is of is some specific guy is moving around) - moving to that 150 km gate in some dungeon or mission, especially with a plated ship.

Erm no one forces you to set your AFK Tag.

The request is for a automated AFK tag, so yes, it would be forced.

Edited by: MidniteMike on 13/02/2008 21:54:56 I like the AFK tag idea, however this could get you messed over if you are in lowsec, so yeah jsut in chat, and i dont like the idea of it not allowing autopilot jumps.. but yeah... thats just my opinion... the autoboot idea sucks because of the massive number of jumps i would do to actually think of doing autopilot would be over 40...

AN AFK tag or should it be called a Tag to let everyone know that there is an easy target in the system?
Seriously this game is not supposed to be done AFK it is supposed to be played.
Sure people who use a 2nd account to boost themselves etc are different as they are actually playing the game still, BUT those people who go AFK and just stay that way for hours really need to either play the game or get thrown off the server.
Yes doing this would reduce server loads a hell of a lot in places like jita or other hubs and by reducing the load it would also help towards reducing lag on the server.
Now there are actually a lot of games now that are using a system where a small window pops up every 15 - 30 minutes and when the player answers a question or clicks on the required button they are rewarded with items or ingame monies for that game (both things aren't much but they all add up)
So lets start worrying about actually [playing the game instead of going AFK and really doing nothing more than adding to the lag.

Very nice escuses for a "easy target there" tag, but mostly wrong.
People AFK doing nothing have very little influence on lag as they are doing nothing so there is very little information going up and down between them and the server.
What lag Jita are the market query, docking and undocking, scanning of ships, ecc. ecc., what lag systems is again the docking, undocking, fighting, ecc. so actions not inactivity.
So don't try to find lame escuses if all you want is a easy target tag or you want to know if the cov ops in your system is actively watching you or instead is asleep on his keyboard.

Moon probing can require up to 40 minutes of waiting for results without changing session or docking. 'Damn, got back a second too late, lets restart the probing.....again'.

Just to clarify.
1: I suggested this mainly for my corp mates so it could be limited to corp or alliance channel only.
2: The suggestion was for convenience not for game play where you can see in local and know they are afk so you can gank them, personaly I wouldnt have it show in local chat window.
3: Autopilot could be shown as AFK/AP.
Seriously, all I was suggesting was for me to be able to know when someone is AFK or in combat and just isn't replying yet or has a different chat up and can't see me typing to them.
No need to get testy about it... this is a "suggestion" box after all.

for corp/alliance chan only, and maybe some other chat channels if im free to put the tag there myself.
Anywhere else its "a free kill" tag.
And saying that people needlessly creating lag should be kicked from server.......well i know alot of people that should be kicked.....especially those freaks that defend theyre POS, since i want it to die......All they defensive actions are just lagging the dreads in siege mode...... yes id like that All of above post was formulated wth 100% honesty and 100% sarcasm.
