Just one question - pardon my noobness if I'm missing something.
OP, you said you lock them to act like you're trying to scare them...
Isn't locking someone in highsec a criminal act punishable by CONCORD? I didn't see a passive targeter in your setup.
Thanks in advance for clearing up my confusion.

Target Locking is not an act of aggression, however, using any of your fittings does. (i.e. Warp Scrambler)

Once the can-flipper steals the ore, they get a 15 minute aggression flag to the target player's corporation. This means they begin flashing red. Anything that is flashing red to you is a valid, free target.
And no, target-locking is not a CONCORDokken offense, only use of offensive modules are. ----- CEO, Astrum Contract Services Group

Little update.
Was in tash Murken last night using your set up with heavy missiles, and got your buddy Seth to aggro me. He was in a Vengance and he was going down, so he called a corp mate in a HAC to remote rep him.
Lame pirating if you require help vs. an Osprey!!!!

Oh... Yeah. I guess I should have mentioned that's common with the Space BorderLine. They are a Corp that will help their own, when faced with an embarrassing deathmail.
That's actually how I got recruited into their Corp, originally. I was fighting one of their guys in my Punisher, and he was on his way out. He was actually remote repped by another corpmate for over 10 minutes, until I ran out of cap charges and had to stop shooting and make a run for it.
They let my ship go, and asked me into the Corp, as some were *amazed* that my ship could go for so long and not go into structure for over 10 minutes of fighting. (I wasn't about to engage the other pilot, as I was well aware of what my ship could do, and what it couldn't.)

Haha! I only just realized something.. You are THE Jack Brazen, whos post have inspired me to do, what I do. Mad respect to you, and probs for bringing it! Im sure 3rd try, will be your lucky try, hehe.
"I currently have 60 skills and 2,706,653 skill points and a Vexor"
My engagements so far: 1 Tormentor - Very young pilot, I ended up feeling bad and paid for his loss plus alittle extra, along with the message: Stealing is illegal :P.
1 Vexor - Old pilot, His T2 blasters and T2 drones was to much for me, I did however manage to get him into low armor, before he killed me, great fight :D.
2 Thorax - Awsome fights, especially the recent one, where I took some hull damage. Looking forward to a 3rd engagement ;).
1 Raven - Old pilot(s), who the hell can flips in a fat slow raven? I made him fly 20km towards my can, then popped it right infront his nose. Being bored, I agreed to a fight, fully knowing my chances were close to none (Its all fun and giggles, right :D). The fight was on! Seconds later, his support Dominix warps in, LOL. Long story short, my vexor got blown to pieces. I lasted alot longer, then I expected, but I barely scratched his shields. The fight wasnt as fun, as I hoped it would be, however the situation was hilarious :D

That's some very clever tactic! well tought and the most important thing is IT WORKS! I got an encounter in a belt yesterday with an Osprey and his can, just sitting there (mining)lasers off with a Mammooth doing orbits near it... I hope It was not you cause if that's the case I'm glad I found the whole scene fishy and warped to next belt without taking anything from Osprey's can! Kudos to you for all those kills on an Osprey!

This really is an effective tactic. I've wanted to do something like this for a while and Jack's post finally inpired me. So, I tried it with both an Osprey and a Vexor. I was afraid that people would steer clear because my character is 16 months old but that doesn't appear to have stopped anyone.
Osprey (fitted pretty much as in OP's post):
Kill #1 was a Merlin fairly new character but in a corp. Pretty straightforward. He asked later if he had walked into an obvious trap but of course I denied it
Kill #2 was a well-tanked Punisher, two-year-old character - I was impressed with how long she lasted. Had me about 60% armor before she popped. 3 x 150mm A/C T2 guns and NOS.
Kill #3 was a Slasher, fairly new character in a corp, no drama.
Kill #4 was a Goon flying a PvP/Tank-fit Bestower, character a few months older than me. All T2 fittings, dual light pulse laser II - had me well into armor before going boom. Hold was full of cap charges.
Kill #5 was the same as #2, came back for a second try in another Punisher. Pretty much the same result. Later at the station we undocked in our BC's and she ripped my Drake to shreds in short order with her Hurricane, so she definitely had her revenge!
Vexor: (using 3xHeavy Electron II and a NOS + Miner I) for a little more gank.
Kill #6 was a Caracal, 2-month old char in a corp. He couldn't get past my shields before going up in flames. What was funny was his bio that (in part) read: "if i steal your things from a jetcan in 1.0 space it's your fault for not protecting them better. Equip guns or secure cans, otherwise your ore is available to the public." I Thanked him nicely for the advice
Kill #7 was a Harpy (T2 fitted, 4xNeut II's), year-old char. He took out my shields in a few seconds but then had tough going against the armor while I killed him. He had corpies in the area so I looted his wreck and docked up right away just as one of his mates warped in with a Drake.
I also lost a Vexor. Guy came in and stole from my can in a Rifter, and even though I had him targeted I couldn't scram him fast enough to prevent him from warping out. I did aggro him though, and he came back in a Hurricane. Now, he was only a 2-month old character so I figured I could take a chance on handling whatever he might come back with. What I didn't take into account is that I no longer had the "weather gage" - i.e. I could not dictate the terms of the engagement. So he orbited me outside my blaster and webber range and slowly pounded me to death. Still, I had him into structure with my T2 mediums before I popped. If only I had remembered to buy insurance . . .
To conclude, this is a lot of fun and gives the can flippers something to think about - I heartily endorse this activity and encourage everyone to give it a try when you want a change of pace!

He just brought one mate in, that's fair. I had a racketeer maller in structure when his support fleet warped in, 5 or 6 of them, battleships and all, to deal with my poor "mining" arbitrator. (of course I got out alive) The best part is they called me a carebear.

So, i was trying a similar thing in a Scythe (similarly fitted) and it proved to be rather successful: 2 rifters (one of them fully T2 fitted), 1 punisher, 1 bestower, 1 mammoth, 1 griffin, 1 stabber over the last 2 days
the stabber was the only one to push me even remotely, but him tryign to go for the speed tank was simply the wrong thing to do against 2 webs =)
I just this second went down to an incursus (T2 fitted) who ofc instantly got remote repped by a gangmate (why oh why that isnt an offence worthy of a concordokken i don't know :/).
But, the cash i've made off the kills before will be enough to fit a new one and start again =).

Nice to hear others are enjoying the idea :) I generally found the same, that the odds were in my favor of looting enough from victims to cover my costs. Always remember to check up on your targets before engaging - just a quick check for corpmates in local will often save you from a fight going all logistics on you. I tend to be willing to fight a lot of frig-sized ships though, since you can often kill them off before their friends have time to warp in, or bleed them down.
Like I've said before though, a great thing about this setup is how it works at low SP. This is largely due to the webs making range and tracking a non-problem, and the neut/nos breaking most tanks quickly. All this can be put together very cheaply, and still take out a tech I frig with ease, so it can be some cheap fun.
And like someone said above - doesn't matter that I posted the tactic here. There will still be plenty of targets for everyone. Just remember kids, the keys to getting lots of victims are location (I'd go for high population system with average to low amount of belts), and psychology (if you aren't getting action, try baiting in local, and if you get people not flipping but just opening your can, lock them and fake-smack a bit in local). If you get those two right, its all a matter of activating all mods and looting. ----- In EVE - never bring a knife to a knife-fight. |

I've always just used a decent fitting on my hulk and gotten my fair share of PvP out of it...
Punisher kill while I was in a Hulk. http://timwheatley.org/2007/11/12/eve-online-kill-report-5/ Crow kill while mostly in a Hulk. http://timwheatley.org/2007/12/08/eve-online-kill-report-4/ Itty II while in Hulk. http://timwheatley.org/2008/03/31/eve-online-kill-report/ Velator while in Hulk. http://timwheatley.org/2008/04/03/eve-online-kill-report-6/
The shield tank is awesome and when combined with good drone skills and enough money to buy another Hulk if you lose one, it's a great ship to use...

**** like that, and the OP, is almost enough to make me get my sec up. I always had a good time punking out people like that, especially those nubs can flipping in BCs and BSs.
Edit: Ugluuk made a Osprey vid back in the day, after he got drunk one night and bought it. Got a few AFs, Brutix, and some cruisers in it. ------

Edited by: Ashina Sito on 13/04/2008 18:06:33 Oddly enough I started playing Eve almost 2 years ago with this in mind. I was planning on using a mining BS in low sec to draw people in and snare them. It never dawned on me to attempt to use can-flipping instead. My attempts to do this in low sec failed, no one ever came by so I gave up on it.
Just to let you know, your flying a Q-ship. They were created in WWI to combat the German U-boats.

It seems everytime we start talking about something like this on vent we decide it would be way funnier to do it with a hulk.
2x Web, Point, Gisti Shield Booster, med drones.
Seriously, don't forget strip miners. Up in fountain we were chillin in mn5, waiting for targets when we spotted a hulk in a belt next door in yz. Our first reaction was 'bait' because nobody is dumb enough to mine with 20+ hostiles in the next system. What really gave him away was the fact he had no strip miners fitted. He was so worried about losing his ship he totally blew his bait status by not even using strip miners. Silly.
