Alright, So I have Battleship to 5, 800k in drones, 6 million points in Gunnery (Can use T2 Large Rails and 4 days our from T2 Large Blasters) as well as most support skills.
I can't decide which Battleship to choose. I know that I should probably go the Mega due to my skills with Rails but the Hyp does have a good tank. I'm really aiming for something here that doesn't use blasters. That can be a possibility but I'm not really an "up in your face" fighter.
Any suggestions are welcome. :)

Edited by: Batelle on 03/03/2008 06:34:00 you don't need a "real" tank to rat. tracking bonus is way more useful than the rep bonus.
7x 425mm railguns with antimatter, 1x heavy neut/cloak/missile launcher/whatever 4x whatevers 3x damage mods, 1 LAR II, 2 resistance mods, 1x whatever.
5 med t2 damage drones appropriate to rat type 5 med vespa EC-600 5 warrior II's
should get you enough dps to drop the big battleships really fast.

So you would recommend the mega over the hyp?

Edited by: Batelle on 03/03/2008 07:59:32 For the purposes of ratting, there isn't a huge difference between them if you remember to stick a tracking computer on the hyp. As long as you have a whole bunch of 425's with antimatter and 3 magnetic field stabilizers, both ships will perform similarly. The main considerations at that point are the slot layout and what you're more comfortable with. I personally like the extra lowslot on the mega. Also take into consideration the particular behavior of the rats you're fighting.

Edited by: Thraxon on 03/03/2008 08:13:00 Ratting in a megathron is sooo much faster with blasters than it is with rails. I'd really give it a try if I were you. Try something like this:
Hi -- 7 x Neutron Blasters II (Antimatter) 1 x Whatever
Med --- 1 x 100MN MWD II 1 x Fleeting Web 2 x Cap Recharger II
Low --- 1 x Large Accomodation repper 3 x Rat Specific Hardeners (for Sansha's 1 x EM, 2 x Therm) 3 x Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Rigs ---- 3 x CCC or 3 x Semiconductor (works a tad better but more expensive)
Drones ------ 5 x Ogre II
This setup dishes out > 1000 DPS, has enough cap and tank to survive. Also has nice speed to get you in range fast to start the in-your-face killing :)
Also the megathron is faster than the hype, it has more than enough ability to tank the rats, has an extra low-slot so you can fit an extra magstab and can carry an extra drone. So imho the mega is the better choice for rating.

Stick your T2 mediums on the frig/cruisers and rip through the BS's with the T2 Blasterthron, works like a charm (even without T2 heavies).

Think a Thorax would work for that? I have ADU4 and guess i need to get lvl 5 at some point. Gallente are such a big change from what I'm used to. (Caldari) Shields and Missles seem so much easier. lol

if the rats you're fighting love to come right into blaster range, then by all means use blasters. Otherwise blasters are a complete waste of time. With railguns you still track them well, the t2 medium drones do fast and kick out around 150dps (without being skillpoint intensive) and with gall bs 5 and large hybrid 5, you should be doing nearly 600 dps with antimatter with an optimal range plus falloff of over 60km.

Ishtar, no question. The mega is totally overkill for npcing and relatively cumbersome and weighty given the alternatives.
A command ship runs in the distant second.
Eddz's laser deimos is another good option. ___ Eve Players are not very smart. Support Killmail Overhaul

Yep a HAC would do the job more effectively.
High enough tank and DPS to kill BS rats - high enough agility to escape hostiles.
He only has 800k in drones though - try a Deimos -> MWD -> pew pew -> yay money!
Then again I like to rat in pvp setup ships, because you never know if your buddies are going to need help, or if a juicy target is trying to steal your rats! __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

I dont want to get offtopic here, but im aiming for a socalled 'in your face' setup myself, and to you out there that use Tech II blasters and antimatter, whats your optimal range? Currently i dont hit anything at all, going back into my battlecruiser till i can fit those Tech II blasters.

wtf!
mwd > bump range > blaster spam = ultimate ratting WIN [that applies to battleships, HAC and even assault ships]
ive never used rails for ratting, but i know its effective...
but seriously? blasters a waste of time?
if u make sure ur touching the rats backside when u trail them they will ALWAYS fly away from you, so u will get 0m transversial and maximum DPS, u can even use t2 blaster ammo for even more DPS and not worry about tracking at all
obviously that doesnt apply for HAC or AS, but tracking isnt an issue against a battleship in those [unless ur skills fail] so close range orbit ftw!
the drones take care of the small targets, job done.
n who says missiles are the win button =]

Do you even rat in 0.0?
Blasterthron + 1x salvager. MWD to target / Smack into them, with drones already on them and web / blast away. Loot wreck instantly after your target goes pop. (Call your drones in when the BS's die and leave the escorts for a proper chain) Very simple, you're usually under your target's guns so the big bs's do very little to you unless its' on approach. Rails on a BS are far more useless for 0.0 ratting because of the loot + salvage and the time requirements, especially the time requirements of knocking them down (which is less than HALVED with blasters and a MWD!).

This
The rats always seem to spawn in the middle of the belts and you have to MWD and Navigate all around the rocks to catch them and then chase each individual rat down hoping you wont get stuck in the rocks if you need to warp out in a hurry, I cant fly the Mega but that's my experience of short range ratting in my torp raven. ========================================= A Man chooses, a slave obeys. |

Not to be a jerk, but if you can't click in space and choose your path by manually navigating an asteroid belt; you really shouldn't be ratting in nullsec. If your rats are stuck in a bunch of rocks, and there's absolutely no way to get at them from your warp-in point, you can always try another belt... I find one t2 I-Stab in favor the 3rd MFS II works just as well (a 3rd MFS gets you stack penalized beyond necessity anyway).

Where does my post say anything about not manually flying the ship, it even specificially says "Navigate" through the rocks. ========================================= A Man chooses, a slave obeys. |

Yet would still suggest them.
Mega has plenty of tank and firepower to kill rats, whether you use rails or blasters. So, after a while, you'll start focus on making it more convenient (i.e. faster). That is, I did start my NPCing experiements with railguns, but as soon as skills allowed, switched to blasters.
If the area feels secure enough, you can get significant convenience increase by investing on long range web (15km domination), faction/DS Afterburner (MWD has high cap costs), and even on snake set. See my case study about Guristas ratting.
As some have suggested, some T2 Cruisers might be even more optimal solution, but personally have no experience with them.

Megathron is a Hyp with a scripted tracking comp fitted, same tracking 1 less gun (14% less dps), and 1 lowslot more and 35% rep bonus less, and less struct/armor/shield/capacitor points, less speed and slower targetting.
Find me a lowslot that can give a 35% rep bonus or better ontop of a 6-lowslot tank, that adds a few thousand hitpoints and adds 14% dps, and then tell me the mega is better, else, go for a hyp.

you realize, being a giant tech 3 ship, u align and move slover making yourself a bigger pirate target
in addition* megathron gets a damage bonus to its large turrets + tracking,
megas can throw out 5x ogre's vs 4x ogres of a hyperion
in theory a hype is better
but a mega fitted
I ASSUME this is gonna be used for ratting
Highs 7x electron II's or 7x Ion II, 1 med / large nos
Med 1x MWD, 1x WEB, 2x Cap Rechargers or 1x MWD, 1x scram, 1x web, 1x med cap booster
Low 1x LAR II, 2x EANM, 1x Anti-Explosive, 1x DCU, 2x Magstabs or 2x LAR II, 2x EANM, 1x Anti-Explosive, 1x DCU, 1x Magstab or 1x LAR II, 2x EANM, 1x Anti-Explosive, 1x DCU, 1x Magstab, 1x Cap Relay
In a megathron you get as he said he had Bship V
25% damage boost, + 25% tracking, on 7x turrets negating the damage loss for lacking an 8th gun on the hyperion
Hype benefits from being able to use a full rack of neutrons making a damage difference
but megathron can use 5x ogres
Yes the hyperion has a stronger tank, but the thron is faster, has a smaller sig radius, and 40-50mill cheaper

Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 25

Hammerhead II x5
~550DPS explosive hardener is there in case a nice little PVP target goes past while ratting

WRONG. Hyperion has more base speed. It has the same mass and the same intertia modifier, so it's just as agile, but simply faster. And being in a tier 3 ship says *nothing* about being a bigger target for pirates, as the hull does not profit a pirate, only the modules do.
As for 5 heavy ogres on a Mega, that's true, vs 4 heavies on a Hyp. But in all of my time ratting, I always carried either 5 meds or 5 lights, heavies won't cut it against small stuff, nor will your guns, with or without a web. So that's not really an advantage.
And as I said, a Hyp has 1 extra medslot. If it uses that for a scripted tracking comp, it gets EXACTLY the same tracking as a Megathron and EXACTLY the same ammount of medslots. So tracking is not to be argued, it's the same.
And then you have the Hyperion, thousands of extra hitpoints in armor, structure, shield, AND capacitor. AND you have 1 extra gun yielding 14% extra dps.
And as for the damage bonus, a Hyperion gets the EXACT same damage bonus, being 25% on LVL V.
Do some research, the Hyp is not slower or less agile, it does not have less tracking fitted properly, it does not get less of a damage bonus, it does get an extra gun, it does get a great tank bonus, it does fly faster.
And lastly, read the damn topic. We're not talking PvP, we're talking 0.0 PvE ratting.
