Titans are fine for logistics purposes, but the DD being able to instapop everything smaller than a properly tanked battleship was the worst idea ever.
EVE is full of game mechanics that don't scale, for example the tanking ability of dreads/carriers in siege modes (a sieged dread can't be saved if enough DPS is on it no matter how many friends it has), why the hell should 10 titans' DDs scale linearly?
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

Meh ok.
3 reasons for a start.
1) Single push of a button should be able to wipe out whole fleet of non cap ships?
2) Titan and mothership pilots are sort of stuck in their ships since they can not dock. So if trained on an old account most skills are likely to be wasted.
3) Titan gangs. With time passing, becomes more and more likely we will see these. Titan gangs need no support ships.
You can check the thread in CAOD for some more reasons.
Also, what in the world is iconic about these ships? Bunch of polygons like all the other ships. Just bigger. I would not miss them one bit once they are gone.

Full isk reimbursement for the Titan pilots. Skillpoints formerly used for the Titan can be freely reassigned.
One can dream, and I would love to see this happen.

Probably by then ccp will introduce some super triple decker titannaught that can one pop titans, or a huge energy bomb or pos turret the size of a small moon.

1. Yes. This is what makes the Titan even theoretically viable in battle situations. Without the DD, and even with it, the Titan is extremely vulnerable to swarm attacks.
As an offensive maneuver, it's very risky, and the ISK value of the ships it potentially destroys is nowhere near that of its cost. One usually expects a battleship to destroy at least another battleship before it goes down, but a Titan will almost certainly fail to destroy a cost equivalent amount of ships before its own demise.
2. This is the price of flying a Titan or Mothership. And, in fact, it's the price of flying any ship. If you specialize in battleships, all those frigates aren't worth much to you. If you specialize in Dreadnoughts, your inty skills are most likely sub-par. The pre-requisite skills for flying a Titan aren't wasted - getting those skills is part of the price of flying a capital ship. And, since these ships are meant to be Alliance assets, a non-issue...you should have at least two Titan pilots.
3. Titan...gangs?
...
Riiiiiight.
So, you're saying that a bunch of ships with omni-directional weapons, worth 100 billion ISK or more, are going to be flying around together, if I understand you correctly.
Doing what?

I'm not in for argument I just plainly don't see the problem and would like the problem pointed out to me with a list of problems detailing the reasons.

Do Titans lead to stagnation of Eve? Is the effect of multiple Titans greater than the sum of its parts? E.g. if an organisation has one Titan, it's possible to deal with it. If it has two, is it more than twice as hard?. If there are three, is it a great deal harder still? If an organisation has sufficient numbers of Titans, do they become so difficult to deal with that they are effectively invincible within current game mechanics and server capability? And that only internal conflict or players leaving the game could change this?
I've read such comments in chat and on forums. But forums aren't exactly beacons of truth, and people frequently type complete garbage in chat.
I have never been in 0.0 long enough to even see a Titan but I have read a post a year ago about how Titans will change Eve combat as their numbers increase. That assessment was partially dead on in that it will lead to stagnation.
I have played Planetside and CR5s with oribital bombardments in my mind are no different from Titans using their superweapons. Before bombabrdments were rare but as time went on multiple CR5s meant bombardments could be used for defensive and offensive maneuvers at the same time. CR5s singlehandedly could steam roll entire armies of infantry and army in seconds and keep them supressed in their spawn tubes until a base capture was successful. Battles with large armies are pointless if too many CR5s are logged in.

How about you start us off with some intended ship roles. I mean, we get that they're big, have been described by CCP as large ****s. But was there a purpose to having them in the game beyond an opportunity to write some fanfic?

about a year ago people were all saying that titans would be flying all around and a dd would go off every 2 minutes, not quite the case now.
also a gang with several titans would get a crapton of bonuses, as well as a tripple dd or something would kill damn near everything, except cap ships, giving the titans time to get out and cloak for long enough to jump out.

My sarcasm detection is only trained to 4 so maybe I'm taking your post too seriously, but Titans DO have roles. They have a variety of them in fact, and most have to do with alliance logistics and combat support. They have massive bonuses that they give to fleet members and of course you can use the jump gate to move friendly ships to other systems. There's even a clone bay so your pilots can get right back in the action with the ships you're carrying in your giant corporate hangar.

This is a useful question because usually developers don't see a problem with something until they know how its supposed to be.
If there are defined roles for Titans, by all means they should write them down. Only then will they be able to tell if the ships are meeting or exceeding their intended usefulness.
And if they have no intended usefulness, then there can't be a problem with them. Their role will simply be whatever it is they're doing.
So far the only official decision that CCP has shown is that titans should be killable, when they nerfed the jump after DDD.

I wouldn't want to see the concept of Titans removed, but their current implementation is just horrible.
If CCP could redo what Supercapitals are from the ground up, they should be a part of EVE. If not, then yeah. I wouldn't really miss em.
My main dislike is that no serious attempt was made to code them from scratch. Instead they borrowed a lot of pre-existing mechanics, thinking its okay to do so. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |
