After reading some article about how people act differently on the internet, I stumbled upon this video of an in-game funeral/memorial done by a WOW guild for one of their members who had died in real life. (WARNING: Video may contain childish profanity)
Here is the video description: Quote: Some girl who played World of Warcraft died in real life, and those horrible failures of human beings planned a funeral for her... RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A PVP ZONE! They posted about the event on the messageboards and urged people not to bust it up.
I don't think I need to explain what happened; the video speaks for itself.
I think its kind of sad and really immature that something like this would happen and I guess it goes to show the difference in maturity of the players (Lets not turn this into a "bash WOW" thread please). Whenever I hear about the loss of a member of the EVE community I am saddened by the loss of a life, but I'm also glad to see that we all still show respect to one another whether friend or foe, especialy in these times of loss.
I guess in conclusion, I am thankful for a mature player base and hope that we will all do what we can to act in a mature and respectful way to eachother. Lets keep the pewpew'ing to the Internet Spaceships only, and remember that we are all still human beaings out of game. ------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm.. why does the name "Smokse" come to mind immediately? I don't know the whole story behind that situation, or if I spelled the name right, but it was really messy. Whatever, it's just that EVE players aren't the angels you think they are.

MMOs are rife with immaturity unfortunately. They say that the age demographic for gamers has expanded from being strictly teens to something like 14-35 years of age, however I find that means you have a lot of adults acting like teenagers. Actually that doesn't explain it, as when I was a teenager my friends and I never carried on the way teenagers do today when playing video games. So lets just say that there are now a lot socially underdeveloped people of a varying age that live in MMOs. It's hard to have empathy for other human beings when you spend all your time in your room listening to emo music and playing MMOs.

The thing is, I find the EVE community is generally less accessible (much like the game) and needlessly elitist. Apples and Oranges. |

Remember that the forums != the community. Generally I've found EVE players to be quite helpful, even if they're blowing you up. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79.1 |

You'd think "mature" adults would understand that generalizing a group of people they know nothing about besides their sense of humor and the fact that they play world of warcraft isn't a very good basis for placing their judgment on.

I'd like to see a memorial being pulled off in the middle of 0.0 space (without GM intervention.) If it aren't the goons that would wreck it, it would be some other group. And tbh, you can't expect something like this to work in a game where people don't generally know each other irl. Not when a community passes a certain size.

If I had read the OP afew years ago I might have agreed but the sad fact is the maturity of EVE's player base has steadily declined as it's numbers have rose. The exact same thing would happen in EVE if a similar event was held in low/null sec.

Edited by: Exlegion on 11/03/2008 18:20:47 I could be wrong, but I can remember atleast one thread where Kublai openly made fun of a player that had passed away in real life. I have also seen players disrespect religion, culture, and anything else that has personal meaning in real life on these very forums. I wish I shared your same views and perception on our community. Unfortunately Eve is not immune to immature behavior. By the same token I know there are lots of great people in the game as well.

I will agree with you that it does seem to be slowly declining. I guess what I was really feeling this and this post was to try and save it, how ever futile it may be. I guess if you are going to take anything away from the thread it would be this part: Originally by: Arkios Odymei ...hope that we will all do what we can to act in a mature and respectful way to eachother. I feel like a sap posting about this kind of stuff, but I just have a thing about undue disrespect. It burns me. /shrugs ------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, being a n00b myself I feel just the same. But then I guess that only raises the stakes and really makes you wanna push hard to do well in the game skillswise, socially (how you relate to others), financially, etc.
EvE is harder alright in all aspects but I like it so. :)

Disrespecting dead people is absolutley inacceptable no matter if its in a game or in real life. I personaly would never do things like that. If i was a GM or a DEV and something like this would happen in EVE i would bann all poeple that are responsible for this attack instantly and forever without warning and with no option to take back the bann.

Same thing would happen here. MMOG communities are pretty much all the same, most are good folks but you got the loud minority doing the internet-makes-me-coll routine. _________________ [IMAGE REMOVED] -- aka Cpt Bogus -- Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Mature playerbase?
*smirk*
Yeah I guess the population of San Quentin Prison could be called "mature" in a way, but I wouldn't invite em over for tea and crumpets.
