Also consider running a boot-time memory scanner to test your ram for flaws, 90% of sudden hangs are because a sector of your ram is bad. I'd be willing to wager that most of the problems being complained about on this forum are client-side issues with people who have computers packed full of spyware and viruses because they use dangerous P2P programs like limewire or bearshare. Check your own computer before b!tching at CCP.
Checked - and nope - still extremly low fps - This has happening EXACTLY since the patche(s) - Not b..ing - but this needs to be fixed asap, as Eve is NOT playable like this... Regards Belmarduk CCP Please give us casual players a Skill-Queue !

Edited by: Joachim LeHigh on 14/03/2008 21:48:45 I don't know if anyone is ever going to see this post but I think there is a very important issue that needs to be discussed. Most of the problems people here are complaining about are client-side. Client-side problems are out of CCP's hands in most cases and can be easily fixed by the CLIENT (this is YOU).
1. Scan your computer regularly for adware/malware/spyware, etc. One of the best programs out there is free, and easy to use. It's called Spybot Search and Destroy, and you can get it here - http://www.safer-networking.org/
2. Scan your computer regularly for viruses, again the tool we use for this at my company is also free. It's called AVG Anti-Virus, and you can get it here - http://free.grisoft.com/
3. DO NOT...I repeat adamantly and urgently DO NOT use Limewire or Bearshare for any P2P downloading. These programs are plauged with people who seed files with viruses and malware. These programs (not any fault of the creators) have been made VERY dangerous to your computer by people wo get a kick out of trying to ruin other people's computers.
4. For lower-end computers, there is a procedure you can implement to make a "clean boot". This disables a great deal of un-necessary processes and startup programs, you would be astonished at how many resources this can free up. Microsoft actually has a KB on this procedure and you can find it here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 . As an aside, for higher end computers, there's no harm in doing this if you wanna squeak out a few more fps.
5. If you're experiencing FPS issues, make sure you're not running anything in the background. Firefox, I.E., iTunes, etcetc. These programs might be useful, but they consume alot of resources. They might not be using up all of your CPU, but lack of CPU isn't generally the cause of computer slowdowns, it's lack of available RAM. Programs will always bottleneck at RAM before the CPU bottlenecks. I actually have a laptop that I use to run all of the secondary programs I like to have on hand on my laptop. Laptops are cheap people, you can get one that will run all of your extra programs off of ebay for 2-300$. This also makes it so you don't have to worry about alt-tabbing out of the eve client, because all you have to do when you need the other program is turn to the laptop.
6. For people trying to run multiple clients simultaneously, I highly suggest you use the clean-boot procedure I recommended before. If running a dual/quad core processor, set the processor affinity so that each client uses a separate processor. While running your clients, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, select the processes tab, right click on one of the eve processes, set it so that it only uses CPU 0, then set the other eve process to only use CPU 1. This should VASTLY increase the performance of both clients. My highest recommendation for people running multiple clients would be to buy a second box. Run eve on both computers and use a KVM switch so that you can use a single moniroe/mouse/keyboard for both boxes.
Edit: Whee embarassing spelling mistake

Again, from a computer technician's standpoint, these bluescreens are caused by your computer's hardware or drivers. There is a REMOTE chance that the problem was caused by eve, but I suggest you run a memory tester and update all of your drivers and bios.
Bluescreens can be caused by any number of things, including video drivers that are being misused. I don't know about DX9/10 but under opengl if you ignore parameters that come back from querrying your drive you can muck up the operating system it'self since windows is not very good at isolating drivers from the rest of the system. Even if it could, this is the video subsystem, screw it up and your computer IS going down.
EvE is quite capable of damaging your system all on it's own, as is any other application because windows just does not have the protections built in (unlike unix derived systems, and even those, the OSX EvE client can take down the OS due to the protected access of the drivers).
Having said that, what kind of technician are you that you are ignoring the one critical piece of information here? If a system works before an app is updated, then fails afterwards, the FIRST thing that one should look into is what that app has done. When I was doing support, the first question we asked was 'what have you done between the computer working and not working?'
Yes, it is possible that EvE just happened to nudge and existing problem into being visible, but if the monday implantation worked but the wednesday one doesn't, that is a strong indication that the new binary is what is causing the problem.
(it should be noted that the non-windows clients are also experiencing problems)

Ok, I've done all of that, I've deleted partition on my hard drive, reformatted, reinstalled my entire operating sytem, installed all the latest updates, installed all current drivers (and my bios IS up to date), Have absolutely nothing installed except for EVE on my hard drive, and I still get an extremely low fps. Do you really think people haven't checked all this stuff? Just because you work at Geeksquad, Firedog or Computer Nerds, doesn't qualify you to tell others not to complain when a patch propels their gaming experience into a virtual hell. If you had any sense whatsoever, you'd notice the hundreds of posts related to the deployment of this patch and the issues that it has caused. Awfully funny how you tell people to check their systems first, even though suddenly after patching things don't work as good they used to. Logic dictates that the last change you made to your system (IE PATCHING EVE) would more than likely cause the problems.
I very seriously doubt my ram suddenly went bad after patching EVE. Grow a brain and shutup if you have nothing useful to offer.

Sometimes a minor change (i.e. a new microsoft patch) pushes that error in the memory, or that slightly corrupted driver over the edge, and it's not the fault of the program. I see it daily, SO I suggested that people run the normal troubleshooting process that we go through.
Edit: as a random aside, after the trinity patch, I was having tons of problems with EVE as well, I went through the same process, when I updated my bios, the problems went away, so it's not unfounded that it can be the client's issue, not CCPs.

Is there any news about the API availability ? That has been down since the patch and no news on when it is coming back.
The actual data returned from the API calls has varied, mostly with a range of error messages, but still no useful data.

I know it might sound harsh, but is everyone using really REALLY crap computers or something? I have had NO difficutly alt-tabbing between two accounts I have had NO 'lag' or eve crashes I have had NO graphics problems I have had NO problems with overview resetting I have had NO problem with the game using all my cpu. right now i have 2 accounts running, msn, browsing firefox and downloading stuff, doing homework etc and i have 10% cpu usage. If im in a mission it might go up to 50, but thats it.
Seriosuly the only thing i have really found from the patch was that API's didnt work but its working for me now so meh. And i found the overview tab things dont work properly but that is probably user error. But seriously if you want to play eve well, upgrade your computer. Please dont expect to play a great high graphics game like eve if your computer cant handle any other new games.
Just to note, i am running vista x64, with 4gb ram, and e8400. That will set you back about 300-400 bucks most! Seriously put in the investment like i did and never have to worry bout client side 'lag' problems again. But maybe people have to come to the realisation that as eve technology increases and they give us a better looking, better performing game, maybe you have to upgrade your computers as well, Just like you would for any other PC game that came out today. Once again sorry for being harsh.

I am guessing that when this all gets sorted out, it will have less to do with the quality of people's computers and will end up being some combination of video card chipset and driver or similiar such thing. The same issues seem to be happening in windows, linux, osx, premium, classic x64, i386, ATI, nVidia, etc etc.
Some people who were runing premium fine are having fps problems with classic now, which really indicates it is not raw cababilty that is the issue.
I on the other hand am using a 2 year old computer with a crappy ATI X800 video card and am seeing none of these issues.

Well fair enough, still I think its a valid point for people to start thinking about. Just cos there computers handled eve when they first got it, doesnt mean they always will. I started off playing eve fine with a crappy computer, i think it was 1.8ghz, with 256mb ram, 30gb hard drive etc. I upgraded to the cheapest graphics card that would run eve and it was fine. Recently i had to upgrade my computer as i had multiple clients crashing, couldnt run eve properly, eve wasnt stable etc. I upgraded my computer and bam i can play again. Im sure i will be upgrading in another 3-4 years to play eve and other games again. Just the way technology works

since this new Patch i have had alot of problems running multi account's I use Vista Have a 2.4 quad Core Duo 4 gig's of ram 256 nivida. I choose to run classic. What happen's to me is i run in non-window mode for about 15 minutes just fine then either i get a C++ Error or the client completely crashes with no sign. This has never happened before this patch. If i try to run in Window Mode it's 10X worse for some reason. Either the 1 client crashes or both do in a mater of only a few second's....after logging onto the server. Kinda stinks when you have 3 accounts and can only run 1 at a time Hopefully this get fixed soon CCP

When we tracked it down it turned out to be related to if a machine with a specific IP address was on the network it dropped the timeing loop in another thread down from 'every 2-16 seconds' to '60% CPU constant trash' due to a nanosleep failing on an invalid integer.

"Connection Timeout - The client did not respond to the server's secure challenge within a reasonable amount of time"
This is the message that pops up after the client hangs at the "login in process ..." me and quite a few of my friends are receiving it when trying to connect. We tried pinging and updating all security packages/firewalls and well ... it makes no sense to us. Any clues ?

I play on a normal computer, normal connection and am one of those happy people with a normal real life.
And I have to say: really nice patch. All works fine, no issues with crappy frames, no issues with lag, nothing. Everything is just going pretty well. So thanks a lot for your continued good work!

the fps drop is still there, but im not surprised since the newsitem read like this patch only fixed new player missions.
to the guy who posted a whole guide to 'keeping a clean and fast computer' .... very useful for ppl who blow at maintaining their computer but thats not it ;) we're talking about a dramatic decrease overnight here(or 2 nights since the patch took that long) now apparently it is something that does not affect all people, or at least not noticable.
Still the issue is there, and i too would like to hear CCP confirm this. It cant be that all these people are seeing ghosts. If they havent found the problem yet, let em post that, but at least let us know that at some point in time it will be resolved.
p.s. what was the key that let u remove the icons for planets/belts etc from ur in space screen? (not the overview) i read in one of these threads that that helped a bit

CCP Fixed alot of the issues people like you were whining about before this patch - i.e. the items and ships tabs going blank, balance issues with certain ships, etc. Things that now work great. But like a bunch of spoiled children, you don't take the few extra seconds it takes to re-arrange your UI when you dock and instead decide to ***** about it.
Grow up and learn how to show gratitude and exercise some patience people.
I would normally agree with you in the fullest. But isnt the ******** what this thread is for? for CCP to get some feedback on what is still wrong? For the M.PIRE! |

Can the people with no problems maybe try to help (info, Cpu/os/GfxCard/driver versions/etc) instead of just flaunting the fact that you arn't having problems? It's really frustrating and make want to reach through the fsxing interwebs and throttle you. I am running eve on an nVidia 7900GT have the newest forceware drivers, a Core 2 Duo 6300, 1 gig of ram, all on win XP Pro. I run the game in 1680x1050 with the graphics set moderately high, sometimes i get slow frames/freezing mouse (before patch too, probably mem or gfx card related) but the main issues i'm having is having to rearrange my windows every time i undock. not a HUGE deal, compared to most, but annoying none the less. If you get to my problem it would be graet, but please fix the major issues first, and at least acknowledge them, it's really dodge to jsut pretend like it's not happening and fix it in the background, let us know what's up and we will respect you more.

I would like to take the time to thank a very kind member of this community.
I posted back on page 5 of this thread about the downtime ruining my chances to gather 180mil ISK for a GTC. I had only 2 million in my wallet and less than 17 days on my account left. I use a retriever to mine, so everyday did count to make that important 180mil.
A user of this community seen my post, his name is 'SciFiLewis'. He Evemailed me a 30 day Game Time Code. I couldn't get over it, such a nice thing to do for someone. He deserves a medal! God bless him.
Thank you very much SciFiLewis, you really don't know the happiness the GTC has brought me, now I can play Eve without worrying about the time running out for a while.
