Edited by: TheSynergy on 15/03/2008 00:10:34 I just started and am wondering on a good general build to let me start doing better missions, making more ISK to train and get implants.
I'm starting out as an Caldari Achura Inventor, I read in a guide that that's a good general package to start with.
Not sure what I want to focus on right now but I'm thinking of a industry/mining main and having the combat stuff second.

You cant go wrong with Navigation, Evasive manevering, Energy Management, Energy Sys ops, Shield management, shield sys ops. And get your fitting skills up: Engineering, Electronics, Weapons Upgrades.

Edited by: Pteranodon on 07/04/2008 13:55:03 You must bore yourself for a month & train all the tier 1 learning skills to level 5 & the tier 2 learning skills to 4. This will give all subsequent learning a substantial boost then train Cybernetics to plug in your first set of implants. Pain at the start but no no pain low gain.

that's the fastest way to get sick of the game and cancel your subscription.
just train some basic skills to get into a decently-fitted cruiser, and when you feel comfortable enough with it, start training some learning skills :)

Why am I not surprised that this is coming from an Achura character?
Anyway. I have a personal rule that, if the next level of a learning skill takes less time than the next level of a skill I actually want, I'll do the learning first. Otherwise, screw it. I'm up to 4 basic/3 advanced on my learnings now, and I'm actually *doing stuff* instead of being parked in a station bored off my ass and loggin in once every few days to start the next learning skill.
Sure, it's not the most optimal way of training skills, but what's the point of shaving a week or two off of your first year's playtime when you're bored to death after one month because you're still stuck in a frigate doing L1 crap while you "get your learnings done"?

I had a lot of fun in a frigate during the first two months of my career...

My advice is joining an established player corporation that is patient enough to accept new players. They will give you advice on how to train your character in the early stages of his career and since you will more than likely be talking to them on a medium like ventrilo they will be able to get a feel for the type of player you would like to be.

I disagree. It's one opinion on how to start the game, and it's actually a very valid option if the people are aware of the cons. The person outlined the advice, outlined the pro, outlined the con, how is that poor advice? Personally, I think the advice of enjoying the short term game and not paying enough attention to learning early in the game is poor advice - I dedicated myself to 2 months of learning, had an absolute blast in my Rifter, and 4 months later I'm streaks ahead of people that started at the same time as me but didn't focus on learning.
If the advice above disagrees with your play style, don't assume it's poor advice. Rather provide your advice, and we can all look at it and pick out your cons saying what terrible advice it is.

Edited by: Zifrian on 09/04/2008 02:44:22 Run level 1 missions and try to loot everything and info it. That way you can see items and skills you need to use them. This will give you a better idea of what is out there and what you want to use - thus, what skills to train.
I'd focus on getting cruiser 3 and maybe destroyer 1 so you can stand up a bit better in missions, then figure out how to fit the things. Caldari start out with a lot of shield skills and their ships are set up to "shield tank" so google that and read the threads on what that means.
There is a steep learning curve at the beginning but if you do your homework, you can figure it out. Simply put, asking for a good way to train is a difficult question to answer. Everyone is different.
My first advice for people that are going to run missions is to train for a salvager and a tractor beam. Then you can make enough money to do whatever it is you decide.
Good luck.

there's a factor in the learning early vs. later debate that usually gets overlooked. you can get two advanced learning skills to 4, then take a break from learnings for a while to train useful skills derived from those two attributes. then add learnings one at a time, pausing after each to train up some skills freshly optimized for speedy acquisition. best of both worlds imo.

For an alt, sitting in a station training nothing but learning skills is a reasonable option. For a main...?
My advice to new players is usually to spend about 50% of their training time on learning skills and 50% on 'real' skills. That will get them to 4+3 about the time their 14-day trial finishes or just after, which is just fine. Then pick off one advanced learning to 4 per week, so after 6 weeks, they're at 4+4. There's no point taking learning skills higher than that unless you're going to be playing for at least a year; after 6 weeks or so I reckon most people will know enough to be able to make up their own mind on that.

Unless something got changed again you only need to train the tier ones to level 4 now to get access to the tier 2 learning skills. I wish that had been the case when I started playing this game.
The best thing for a new player if you are wanting to start making isk in larger amounts faster. Pick a very narrow area of the game you want to focus on. Get good at that, and then start to expand. It's more fun I think to explore many areas at once, but you aren't going to get competitive with the expeirenced players fast that way. But this is a game not a job. Isk isn't everything, only a useful thing. Recruitment Thread EKT Website |
