I have a few ideas, some small and others a lil more radical. Please feel free to agree or disagree in a civil manner, I realize not everyone is going to like my ideas. If you dislike an idea please tell me why.
1. I feel that if you are going to allow corp members to tractor each others wrecks, you should also allow alliance members to do the same. I recently setup a looting ship with tractors and headed out realizing that my tractors were just about useless as 99% of the wrecks were of my alliance mates.
2. Right now in the year 2008 our cars have remote locks so when we leave our car is relativly secure. After reading many alliance mails saying "I left my (enter ship here) at (POS name here) and its not there, please bring it back." I think there could be a password to enter an alliance/corp mates ship allowing you to leave your ship at a POS more freely.
3. This, I think, is the most drastic idea of the three. I think that asteroids and other space debris should block incomming fire. This would add a whole new element of strategy to the game. Ex: A ninja miner ventures into 0.0 and a pirate warps into the belt. Normally the pirate would have the obvious upper hand but since the miner is in the asteroid belt itself the pirate would have to actually enter the roids in order to get a clear shot. This could potentially be a very fun pvp opertunatly for interceptors or other small fast ships as the roids would be able to be used as cover.
Anyway, those are my ideas for now. Maybe they are good, maybe they are flawed but there they are. I hope you like them :-)

I like idea #2 Locks for ships in POS's Its what kept me from getting a mothership on my main honestly.. I didn't like the idea of not being able to park it safely enough... and keep someone else from just hopping in it and taking it for a joy ride..
I also wondered myself many a time on idea #3... why do my blasters/lasers/solid bullets/missles pass unharmed through asteroids? Last I checked these things aren't made of swiss cheese.. they're solid rock!

Heres an idea for #1.
Just add an option in the general options with a checkbox that says "Allow alliance members to tractor wrecks"
That, I think, would be a good compramise.

1. Yup, sounds good, and I can't think of a game-breaking reason not too.
2. Yup, I like this too, although those ships should still be destroyable.
3. Wouldn't work. The calculations required by the server to handle this could be staggering (lone miner in a belt - not so hard (about the same complexity as a CS game); but a full fleet battle?). The other thing is if you do this for asteroids and other scenery, soon people will be asking why it doesn't do that for ships...and then location-specific damage...and so on. It's possible, and I would love to see my tachyons slice a ship in half as its killing blow, or be able to hide behind an asteroid to repair a bit before the enemy comes round the corner to finish me off, but the complexity involved would cause horrendous problems for fleet battles.

I dont know much about coding and such so I dont know how hard that would be. It would be cool if a DEV could confirm that.
But I have to disagree with the second half of your arguement. Just because they change asteriods and debris to block incomming fire dosnt mean they have to revamp everything. . . to be honest I dont know what you mean by it not being like that for ships. When an enemy hits me, the missile/charge/laser blast does not go through me, it stops.
I also don't understand what "tacyons slicing a ship in half" has to do with my idea. my suggestion had nothing to do with "location specific damage" unless I am misunderstanding what you are saying.
All I'm talking about is, if I'm behind a rock thats a good few thousand feet across, why should I get hit by a missile fired straight through it?

1. Just fleet them, pretty sure that works
2. Locking mechanism could be nice, but only inside POS shields, I don't want to see Jita become even more of a parking lot.
3. They used to have a mechanic where missles and **** would snake around astriods, but it caused **** tons of lag, so they took it out. Be nice, but less lag is far better.

I agree with you on all three points.. less however on the first one.. Alliances are usually larger compilations of corporations with their own internal politics. I almost agree with you... and think If alliances were able to tow each others cans that should be fine.. but am a bit against it.
It feels pretty balanced as it is.. anyone in fleet can tow cans shot by other members in fleet. So its safe to assume that the members in that fleet would want you towing those cans.
The rest of your points I agree with.

The weapon 'stopping' is merely an effect - a local effect at that, because you can turn it off. The calculation to hit is purely mathematical and involves nothing about the space between the two opponents - just what the two ships are doing at the time. The angles and spacial co-ordinates are not used to calculate to hit, and to introduce asteroids as blocking would require the spacial co-ordinates of both people plus all the scenery, and check if any of the scenery co-ordinates intersect the line between the two opponents. It sounds fairly simple, but how many asteroids are in a belt? Plus, what about the shape of the object? Should I be allowed to 'shoot through' the hole in a stargate, because it's blank space? In which case not only the spacial co-ordinates of the objects, but their dimensions need to be included too.
Like I said, it is possible, and the coding is relatively simple, but many simple calculations is still alot of work, and we want to reduce lag, not introduce more.
Perhaps when the servers have lag of sub 0.5ms it would be worth it.

Edited by: Azamai Cyaer on 20/03/2008 14:00:56 Bagoon: I'm afraid fleeting them isnt really a sound option. I head out to do some looting. When I get into the belts I'd have to look at each wreck to see who killed it and then convo that person and see if he wants to sit in a fleet with me while I loot wrecks. That is if he isnt already in a fleet elsewhere.
Zhen Zhu: I see your point but that is also why I said they could simply add a check box in the options for "allow alliance to tractor wrecks" :-)
K'MKarr: Thank you for clearifying that cause I have no clue about codeing. If I were to do it my way, I'd ignore all "other objects" and leave them how they are. Stargates and such would not be an issue it would only be asteroids that I really cared about changing. But anyway, its just an idea :-)
