What happened to the nice sun graphics?
you used to be able to warp right up to the sun and really see a flaming ball of gas. now its just a impossible to reach point of light. I think the old sun graphics were one of the most beautiful things in eve, so what the heck happened to them?

Seconded. I flew to one to show off the gorgeousness that is Eve to a friend to convince him to come play, and it was gone! Luckily enough the warp tunnel was good enough for him.
But yes, please bring them back! Especially with the new bloom effects. What a screenshot that would make.

Just make sure you warn him about the evil pirates that deny noobs the right to see the pretty warp graphics and instead present them with the inside of the station again.

So what happens if you fly up to it now? Is it just that the warp in point for the star is not as close as it used to be or are you actually prevented from flying in closer?
I had a little fly-to-the-center-of-the-star day a few months back and it sure did look cool. There were distinct layers of the star I flew through with slightly different graphics effects. Ultimately I found the most powerful bump-out I've ever seen in the game at the middle of it (just for fun we warped a carrier in to that spot, he went flying out like 5-10 million km, took him almost 10 minutes to slow down to the point where he could warp out.
If they really have removed it, here's another close up shot of a star: B-XJX4
The star is actually on the right side, it started going convex once you got really close. Seemed like a cool place to have a fight.

i regularly safespot to low solar orbit if needed, not always easy to select the star to warp to it though. And yes the stars look beautiful in premium up close.

Did it cause graphical issues in some way or increase lag? because I can't see why you would want to take something out like this unless it truly posed some detrimental effect to eve gameplay.

I prefer some of the newer effects that the sun has on ships to be honest :

Miss the older ones though... I assume you're talking about the really close up firey ball?

well what I truly don't understand is that this didn't disappear with trinity. It seemed to be patched out in the trinity 1.1 patch recently. So unless theres some deeper effect that couldn't be seen on the player level it would seem that the great balls of fire version of suns worked fine with trinity.

This bugs the HELL out of me! To the OP and others that do this...the "sun" is the name given to the "STAR" in OUR solar system that contains Earth. I cant stand it when people go around calling other stars "suns". You dont go around calling other planetary bodies Mercury's or Neptune's....so dont go around calling other stars "suns". Get your astronomy straight! I would think you guys would know this since you play a damn space game.

there was a patch a while back that nerfed the sun once... and a dev said it wasn't supposed to... and they eventually un-nerfed it back to its fiery goodness.
i suspect the same has happened again... the solar graphics code must be wonky if it's so easy to nerf the sun...
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
I'm currently 20000 km away from a star, it's only slightly bigger than it was 5 AU away. It seems like it's been replaced with a 2D sprite. _________
Actualy Mattikus, your wrong. the name of our SUN.. is "Sol" Which is the name given to the Sun/Star at the center of our solar system. Stars are rutienly called Suns when looked at.
And as for wha the OP is talking about yea.. they did change it, Even with premium grafix turned on. I just warped to the Star/sun in Goram.. and rather than being next to a 3d object with nice flames/solar flairs excapeing from it, i was 330km away from a 2d sprite =( Hope they bring the old suns/stars back.. --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. Edited by: Ghengis Tia on 24/03/2008 21:55:17 TBH, I'd like to see a graphix option that gives you the choice of an initial view "away" or "toward" each system's star when undocking or traveling through.
That bright ball of yellow/white fire gets to be annoying after a long time spent going about yer business.
Maybe we could have some camera drone presets to take care of this...
They broke the fiery ball of plasma effect once before, and then fixed it, if I remember right. Maybe they just broke it again and it'll come back once they notice it's gone.
yea it vanished with 1.1.... i know it still worked after Trinity launched, cause i warped to the same star in Goram to see if it looked any different. (figured they upgraded the ships and stations.. why not the sun? hehe it looked the same it always did to me though. But now its borked  --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. Men, and ants." |
In response to the sun vs. star thing, when I originally posted I was hesitant to say sun, BUT if I had said star I think all of you would have thought I was talking about the bright eve gate star thing that appeared after and trinity and then disappeared in trinity 1.1. So to avoid confusion I simply said sun hoping that I would get the benefit of the doubt from my fellow capsuleers.
Regardless, if all your going to do is derail my thread with pointless flaming remarks go be a neanderthal elsewhere and don't act like some sanctimonious 9 year old who's just read his first science book.
