A rather surprising upset for Venture Racing Team, who up until this point have dominated the top two positions in the interceptor category since the beginning of the season. Kayleigh Jamieson and teammate Daran Hudson gladly filled the vacancy with wildcard Scuderia Caille captain Quintrala close behind. Many of the pilots this event groaned at their performance, but Dragonstar clearly benefitted from last SundayÆs performance.

Ezekiel Sulastin returned to the center stage of the assault frigate class in a lone Enyo, staving off the hordes of Jaguars (and a lone Wolf) in his wake. With DirtsideÆs team captain Darina Rea right on his tail and DragonstarÆs Jude Kopenhagen somewhere nearby, the reigning champion Dougalar was seen limping into fourth place. The Frontal Impact diva is finally starting to get the competition sheÆs been clamoring for.

I managed to catch Frontal Impact's team captain Irongut all by himself at a table in a smokey corner of the Daredevil's Lounge with a bottle of whiskey, and decided to ask him some questions...
How did you first hear about the Racing League? I think I first read about the league on GalNet halfway through season one. I followed the reports for a few weeks and considered taking part but then I moved to Fountain. I rarely returned to Empire space and forgot about racing. I heard about the league again during season two and since jump clones made it easier I decided to enter. My first race was the last race of season two in Khanid and I was immediately hooked.
What do you do professionally outside of racing? I'm primarily a combat pilot and that's what I do most. But, I also have some duties as an officer of my corporation and an interest in the rig business across several regions so I'm always busy.
Your alliance and team, Frontal Impact, are sponsoring the League for season V. Can you tell us a bit what Frontal Impact is and their goals? Frontal Impact is a small, combat focused alliance run by my corp - M'8'S. We have experience fighting Empire wars, low sec pirate hunting and 0.0 combat and have had campaigns everywhere from Branch and Tenal to Fountain and Querious. At the start of the year we were based in Placid near the entry points to Syndicate and Pure Blind and had some conflicts with the residents of both those regions. *grins* At one point we had six wars declared against us in a single week.
In recent weeks we have returned to 0.0 to work with our long standing allies Band of Brothers and are now based in Delve. Several of us, myself included, were heavily involved in the siege of Mercenary Coalition territory in Period Basis. Being back in 0.0 is a relief and joy for someone like myself that has spent most of my time as a capsuleer there although it does make it harder to attend the races. I had to miss the recent Everyshore race because I was stuck in a Megathron, living out of a POS for several days, and unable to clone jump during the attack on 1-NJLK.
Originally Frontal Impact was created as a way to further our corporate goals and ease certain administrative problems. Now we are looking to expand and recruit a small number of like-minded corps to join us. M'8'S has held system sovereignty in the past and we hope FI will claim space on the outer-rim in the near future.
What is your favourite ship to race in and why? Hmm a difficult question. *lights cig* I love the speed and agility of Hornet II my current Ares. But, despite a poor result I think I'd have to say Angelfire, the Dramiel I flew in the Season 4 faction frigate race. She was a gift from an old friend in the Cartel and has a feeling of power the Ares lacks.
M'8'S, your team's former name, has consistently dominated the assault frigate class thanks to Dougalar. Will your team be reclaiming the title for a third season this time? My main priority for this season is to reclaim our title. For the last two seasons Dougalar has been the only pilot with both the speed and consistency to win the Assault Frigate class and I want to see that record continue. Success in the other classes would be nice but not at the expense of her title.

[35]
What team and individual do you anticipate being your closest rival? Back to the difficult questions? *takes long draw of cig* All the teams are strong... VRT with their numbers and Takahashi to lead the pack. Scuderia Caille were very fast last season and Quintrala's students are doing well again this season. Dirtside have a strong line-up, they didn't have an entry in the AF class at the start of the season but with Darina flying in the class again in recent races I am keeping a close eye on her and her team. And, I'm sure Jude Kopenhagen flying under Kayleigh's tutelage at Dragonstar will cause some upsets. They're the main ones that concern me at the moment but it will be half way through the season before we know for sure.
If you had to destroy a rival pilot's ship, who would you take the greatest pleasure in dispatching? *laughs* You're a wicked woman Gyra! Although there have been racers I planned to shoot it was purely due to competition, nothing personal, and in the end it wasn't needed. There is no-one I wouldn't shoot if it helped my team but also there isn't anyone in the league I actively want to shoot. If there was then you'd already know about it, I'm not known for my patience.
It's just business, eh? The subject of combat in the league has been a devisive topic between pilots. What would inspire you to fire on your fellow pilots? You may remember at the tail end of Season 3 I unexpectedly switched to the Assault Frigate class for two races. It was before we had the current team structure but at the time M'8'S was allied with Dougalar's corp Imperium Technologies. My own third place in the Interceptor class was already guaranteed so I switched classes to protect her from Darina and to ensure she won the first AF title. In the first of those races Darina left the first low sec waypoint just as I was getting into warp scramble range. I was unable to catch her for the rest of the race but in the end the Guristas did my job for me in Saranen. In the second of those races Darina didn't show so my combat skills weren't needed. That was actually the beginning of Dougalar and I working together as a team.
So basically if shooting someone will ensure we win a title I will do it. Also if someone opens fire on one of my team they better be damn sure I'm not nearby because I will be on them before they can fire a second volley.
What is your most memorable moment in the League? I managed a few podiums in the Interceptor class in Season 3 but I think my most memorable moment came in Season 4. I'm tempted to say flying through the pirate gate camps in Rancer during the last race of the season but it has to be the end of the previous race. Dougalar had achieved an unassailable lead in both individual and team AF titles and she told me she couldn't have won both without my help. That gave me a feeling of pride and accomplishment that still hasn't gone away.
Do you have any advice for new racers to the League? Ah that's an easy one. Start small, in the frigate class. Don't worry about implants, faction mwd or expensive rigs... just get on track in whatever you can afford to fly. There are a lot of simple mistakes you can and probably will make in your first few races and there's no point spending hundreds of millions till you know what you are doing. Joining an established team can be a huge help too.
What are the origins of your callsign, "Irongut"? Are the rumours of your professional eating career a myth? *glances round the room and leans forward* It's an old nickname... from when I was a kid. I used to run with a fairly notorious street gang. I got it then... I can't really say more.
*downs whiskey and sits back, smiling again* But hey, if you want to organise an InterStellar Chilli Cookoff I'd be happy to be one of the judges!

I had the opportunity to meet up with team Dirtside's latest sensation, Rawr Cristina.
How did you first hear about the Racing League? My corpmate Darina was pleading on our corporate network for racers - Up until then I didn't even know about this (I never paid much attention to these sorts of things), so I thought I might as well give it a go.
What do you do professionally outside of racing? I'm mostly just a combat pilot, really, and a bit of a missile whore at that. It's kind of a necessity, being affiliated with Sansha's Nation and therefore kill-on-sight to half of New Eden. People generally think we're no different than the those pesky rogue Sanshas you find in belts, you know?
Being an active supporter of SanshaÆs Nation, do you find yourself in conflict when forced to engage remnants of SanshaÆs minions in various regions of the star cluster? If fired upon, would you fire return fire? I don't fire upon Sansha vessels unless they're directly threatening me. Outside of racing it's fine since I can just warp out, but my poor Raptor is really vulnerable to those lasers. Mix that with the fact I'm having to sit there for over a minute waiting for a container to open and well, you get the idea.
If you had to destroy a rival pilot's ship, who would you take the greatest pleasure in dispatching? Probably Takashi [Kurosawa]. He's so damn fast, even when he messes up and loses places, he still zooms on ahead. Damn robot... *frowns*
Given the ungainly reputation of Caldari vessels, especially in League racing, what motivated you to fly the Raptor? I just love Caldari ships. Really they arn't that bad when it comes down to it. I would probably fly a Malediction if I didn't have more important things to train, but after flying half the season in my Raptor it's become sort of iconic, you know? I guess I just like to be different...like everyone else.
Your performance during your rookie season has shaken up the interceptor class, including some of the mainstay racing veterans. What do you attribute to your startling performance thus far? Oh I wouldn't call it 'startling' heh. Not after Race 5. *frowns*
I've flown Interceptors a lot and many race-specific equipment like getting into warp as fast as possible, landing on containers(wrecks) properly I was all quite familier with, so that all helped to some degree. I would be lying though if I said skill training and ISK wern't also important. *blushes*
What is your most memorable moment in the League to date? Hmm, it's all a blur really. I'd have to say the first race - it was really an odd first experience to see thirty frigates piling up on a waypoint like that, you would think they'd just killed a high ranking officer or something and were all desperate for the precious, precious salvage...and to see that on every waypoint. I didn't expect it to be that close!
If you had to choose any other pilot not on your team as a racing partner, who would it be? Probably Kayleigh [Jamieson]. It's been a fight to keep up with her in every race, usually decided by who screws up the most. Plus we're both trying to helplessly oppose the evil, opressive VRT domination this season, so it would only make sense. *sticks out her tongue* |

Do you have any advice for new racers to the League? Train Evasive Maneuvering if you haven't already.
Not only will it bring you a step closer to flying Interceptors effectively, but you'll be saving precious seconds both warping about and be less clumsy on your approaches. Nothing quite as annoying as overshooting by ten kilometers only to turn around and overshoot again and, well, you get the idea. *sticks out her tongue*
One thing I learned after the first race was that speed itself really isn't as important as you'd think, at least for an Interceptor pilot. I suppose if you fly the much slower frigates it wouldn't matter as much... but what would I know?
What are the origins of your call sign? In truth, It's always been a mystery even to me. My memory has been messed with so many times I barely remember what I ate for breakfast this morning. Maybe 'Rawr' is an acronym I was given as part of my work for the Caldari? They wern't kind enough to tell me much about that sort of thing.

Last SundayÆs exhibition event featured a surprise for its participants: A twenty-five waypoint event held entirely in the Archee system, a lowly low security area of the Sinq Laison region. Flying exclusively in frigates, these twelve brave souls journeyed through asteroid belts, moons, planets, and the star to claim the first place prize.
The seasoned champions, Takashi Kurosawa, Quintrala, and Dougalar, all took an early lead with rawr Cristina right behind the VRT team captain. Overtaking the rookie pilot at waypoint nineteen, Dougalar found her Vigil under fire from Ms. CristinaÆs Condor. Repelling the assault, Irongut warped in to finish the fight by dispatching her in defense of his teammate, allowing Dougalar to finish in third place. Cristina later finished in eighth place.
A notable finish for demon flir for coming in fourth place, and a debut performance from racing newcomer Cai Lun, who managed to complete the course unscathed.

OVERVIEW Last SundayÆs event started in the Derelik region, controlled by the Ammatar Mandate and teeming with SanshaÆs Nation through its lower security areas. The track began in Tanoo, with a brief interlude through Devoid and the Bleak Lands before looping back around in the system it began.
While ScuderiaÆs Lucas Avignon and Dirtside team captain Darina Rea managed to score easy victories, the interceptor class was anything but simple. The split paths at waypoint twelve and fourteen proved to be a source of confusion for Venture Racing Team in particular. With Rawr Cristina bursting into the lead and Zelseus in tow, Kayleigh Jamieson and Takashi Kurosawa scrambled to keep up, with Takashi reaching his second wind passing both Jamieson and Zelsius to score a second place finish with just seconds to spare. Zelseus managed to reach third, pushing the Dragonstar team captain out of yet another podium finish this season. |

Edited by: Darina Rea on 28/05/2008 19:19:49 I'm proud of my team. 3 racers and 2 first places and 1 third. Couldn't ask for more right?
On a curious note, I'm seeing 3 disqualifications. Any elaboration on those?
And as a shameless plug. The Dirtside team is looking for pilots! Are you a dirty fast pilot and interesting in starting a race with a top team? Seek no more and apply. We go for gold, glory and the rust trails of our competitors.
Experience not required. Pilot skills not required, you'll learn these quick enough. Expendable frigate to fly is required. _________

On the holo it looked like The Queen was holding second place for a long time. Bunch of petty thieves in this League... *winks playfully* Next time, Quin, next time!
And where is Kazuo? I won a little bet and the man disappears? The public demands more betting!

Interesting with those figures to see where I lost the most time. Compared with the race winner, even after making an awful mistake between wp 6 and 7 (specifically not going to wp 6 and having to go back :P), I was still slowly losing odd minutes as the race progressed
I have trained how to overheat my engines though, so should be able to put that into practice this coming sunday

(Individual waypoint times can be found here.)
OVERVIEW The seventh event of the season took place in the Genesis region, the largest domain of Imperial authority and what many believe to be the birthplace of civilization. Beginning and ending in the Yulai system, the racers were met with immediate complications at waypoint one, where a controversial call caused plenty of grumbling and upset. The agitation continued as pilots were met with a new but old adversary, decoy containers, at five different locations.
Met with three different containers at the same locations, pilots were met with a ôTRY AGAINö surprise if they found one of the decoys rather than the location of the next waypoint. Whether any teams were able to capitalize on these gambles is circumstantial, but met to Venture Racing TeamÆs disadvantage as Dragonstar Team Captain Kayleigh Jamieson swept into first place in the interceptor class, with a surprising win for demon flir of Scuderia Caille.
An old rivalry reappeared much more cordial this round as Darina Rea and Dougalar once again met head to head in the Assault Frigate class. While many continue to speculate on who will fire the first round, for the time being both seemed rather content to exchange courtesy and compliments. Jude Kopenhagen, as ever the gentleman, was polite enough to finish after the two women for third place. |

Ladies and gentlemen,
Last Tuesday bore witness to an historic turn of events, both extraordinary and tragic for New Eden. The fragile peace that has held our nations together has been severed, and with it the lives of countless soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire. And while order has been re-established, the war continues to rage amongst the heavens that is certain to have an impact on humanity for years to come.
The Interstellar Gaming Consortium is committed to bringing quality entertainment to its audience throughout New Eden and will continue to host League events as scheduled. As the lead organizer and fellow capsuleer pilot, it is my sincere hope that those who continue to participate in our events maintain the spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Millions of eyes are upon you each week for fun and escape, and it is through you and your example that reminds us that despite our differences we can still share common interests.
See you all at the finish line.

Anyway, that was race #6. Now speaking of last race... I think I have a surprise for you

Last SundayÆs exhibition took place in the Providence region, wholly unprotected from CONCORD in the outer reaches of the Amarr Empire. The significant presence of Sansha's Nation throughout the region was only offset by the local capsuleer alliances and freelance mercenaries scouting the asteroid belts. Seven crazy pilots braved the abyss in their interceptors, starting in Tash-Murkon and ending on the opposite side in Domain, traveling down the Providence pipeline past several CVA outposts.
Quintrala began with an early lead over interceptor veteran Takashi Kurosawa and hotshot Rawr Cristina, but it wasn't long before the Intaki caught up in his Taranis. After a short cat and mouse game, Mr. Kurosawa proclaimed he would let her win, leaving many to wonder if that was the truth or ego speaking as Quin secured first place. Ms. Cristina found her own game of tag with Frontal Impact pilots Dougalar and Irongut as they traded hybrid charges, while Maru Sha was not only greeted by the Amarr Navy at every turn but elements of the CVA who took a displeasure to her presence.
Fortunately for all participants there were no casualties in the race, and only one disqualification from Ms. Cristina for failing to mark a waypoint.

I'm quite interested in setting up a private team for the races, and to try some in season V for experience. I have a few noob questions tho:
I am wondering what constitutes a competitive setup. That is are all the leaders using full snake sets and T2 rigs? (ie multi-billion isk setups)
Is it worth entering with entering with T1 rigs and rogues for the experience?
Is the frigate racing a good entry level for training or are you better off going striaght into the interceptor divisions if you have the ISK!

I can't be sure of the other teams, but I think that I can say that the average racer doesn't use multi-billion setups. Or multi-billion implants for that matter. Alot of the people racing just aren't that right, a few exceptions not withstanding ofcourse.
Originally by: Daan Sai Is it worth entering with entering with T1 rigs and rogues for the experience?
Not just for the experience! Most if not all racers have just T1 rigs with a T2 setup, and maybe a gistii MWD. For myself, I don't even have any racing implants.
Originally by: Daan Sai Is the frigate racing a good entry level for training or are you better off going striaght into the interceptor divisions if you have the ISK!
Whatever you fancy really and feel most comfortable flying. You can compete on the top level of any class with a 10 million worth fit if your pilot skills are good enough. Basicly an expensive ship helps, like everything helps to get faster, but a bad pilot in a good ship won't suddenly change into a good pilot. A tip before starting is joining an experienced team for the remaining races of this season so you can see and experience what the older teams have cooked up and use that experience once you are going for your own team.
Unless you enjoy the challenge of doing everything and finding everything out yourself ofcourse.

I think there might be one or two people using low grade snakes but not many of us (or me). The way these races work agility is more important than straight line speed and once you're doing 9km/s it's already hard enough to stop without going even faster. T2 rigs are common in the Interceptor class but I don't think they are as common in the other classes.

The Interceptor class is extremely competitive and you probably do need to spend a fair bit to do well there. I'd definitely recommend starting in the frigate class with T1 rigs and either a cheap faction or T2 MWD. That way you can find out if you enjoy it and learn how the races work without robbing a bank.

Thanks for the cool info, now I'll definitely be entering the races once i have my gear together.
I can see how agility counts, to stop and collect the bookmarks as quickly as possible.
Is is legal to gang with your team mates to get speed bonuses? nvm, I'm getting the rules now.... Looks like a lot of effort has gone into this, well done.
See you on the course one day soon.

Hello, Mr Sai!
Yes indeed, ganging is permitted and there's even a whole much-debated strategy going on in the league that depends on ganging with your team mates - the controversial Warp Train.
My colleagues have already answered your questions; I don't have much to add except to perhaps second their thoughts in recommending you perhaps start off in the T1 Frigate segment with a relatively modest set up, so you can race a little bit more relaxed and see if you enjoy the League.
I look forward to seeing you on the track; good luck with your setups ;)
