The Interstellar Gaming Consortium is proud to announce the fifth season of its premiere racing competition, the Racing League. This season is slated to begin on March 30th. Many of us in the league have tried to think of a way to do something like a play by play.
The problem is that the race is run over such a large volume of space its almost impossible to really do.Without scattering a ton of cameramen/commentators cloaked all along the course.And I doubt that Gyra wants to give out info on the course before the race starts.
Some teams have com officers who will occasionally give out info but its more like the way F1 teams work where you only hear what they want you to hear.

Time: 20:00 EVE Standard Time
Starting Region: Essence
Racers should arrive in the channel Racing League one hour in advance for the location of the starting position. For new members unable to reach the channel, please join ISGC Lobby and request access from an ISGC representative. Roughly thirty minutes before the event, fees will be collected and information will be gathered from the participants. If you would like to recieve reminder mails of upcoming races, simply join mailing list ISGC RACING.

OVERVIEW
Welcome back, racing enthusiasts! Anticipation was high last Sunday as the fifth season of the Racing League formally began with its first event. With thirty pilots willing to take the plunge, some being wide-eyed rookies and others established racing veterans, teams and individuals alike were eager for a chance to establish an early point standing this season.

Last Sunday's event began in the Essence region, taking pilots through pirate infested low security areas such as Parts and Old Man Star. The track then crossed over into Placid through Orvolle, passing through Intaki and ending in Stacmon. The Serpentis presence was exceptionally intimidating, proving to be a serious hazard for racers as they swung through low security asteroid belts and gates. |

The frigate class saw its chief competitors from both Scuderia Caille and Venture Racing Team pitted against one another. However, it would be Lucas Avignon who would prove triumphant over stiff resistance, with season four frigate champion Thulla Icin nipping at his heels. Scuderia Caille is establishing itself as an early dominant factor in the Frigate class, as its second pilot (Dhaikin Lharoud) slipped into third place just behind Ms. Icin.
Aeschee proved to be a trap for green pilots as a hostile Taranis and a wing of Serpentis battlecruisers swooped in and dispatched both Nyabinghi and demon flir. Several reports came in with an especially nasty group of Serpentis at Waypoint fifteen, an asteroid belt in the Brarel system, that claimed the ship of Dragonstar pilot deathlords.

Pilots came out in record numbers to race in one of the most competitive classes in the league: interceptors. With sixteen competitors launching from the starting line, tension was high as Venture Racing Team, Dragonstar, Scuderia Caille, Frontal Impact, and Dirtside's craziest daredevils battled it out for dominance. However, despite an early system malfunction, Takashi Kurosawa proved once again his flawless superiority as he and wingmate Elsebeth Rhiannon set a comfortable buffer for Venture Racing Team, pushing back Kayleigh Jamieson to third place. Newcomer Rawr Cristina of Dirtside made a superb freshman performance in a Raptor, defying previous criticisms of the ineffectiveness of Caldari models in racing venues. Despite a strong presence on the track, Kazuo Ishiguro limped into last place just behind FI team captain Irongut.

Yet another close race for the five participants in the assault frigate class, with two time assault frigate champion Dougalar teaching a new generation of adversaries who owns the the track. Despite this, sophomore racer Jude Kopenhagen managed to secure second place a mere nine seconds behind the leader while Venture Racing Team headed up the rear of the pack. On a special note, Kendar Zek, Venture owner and eccentric philanthropist, actually reached the end point unscathed...

The second event of the fifth season blasted off last Sunday with a record thirty-seven racers across all three classes. With teams already establishing an early lead, competition was fierce as pilots struggled to close the early gap.

Lucas Avignon dominated the frigate class once again, establishing himself a firm lead in the individual class and securing a healthy advantage for Scuderia Caille. Team KhanidÆs Godagast Goudiyah led a commanding performance that earned him second place, finishing nearly two minutes behind Mr. Avignon. Racing newcomer KillJoy Tseng made his debut performance by earning third place for himself and Venture Racing Team, assuring VentureÆs competitive distance from Scuderia Caille

Seven competitors entered the assault frigate competition for the Heimatar event. Dhaikin Lharoud of Scuderia Caille, who had originally began the season flying in the frigate class, made a surprising switch to a Wolf and stunned the masses with her first place finish. VentureÆs Ezekiel Sulastin crept into second place nearly a minute behind, while season champion Dougalar secured a podium finish for herself.

OVERVIEW
The third event of the fifth season began in the region of Molden Heath. New rules, new teams, and new track layouts made this event anything but simple, even to many of the veterans of the League. There were some surprise upsets due to this as well, and even CONCORD made a cameo appearance.

While Molden Heath was the starting region, a far majority of the race took place in the neighboring region of Derelik. This event was the debut of the dual can layout, to balance out warp and sub-warp necessity and increase the challenge for pilots on the track. There were several discrepancies at various waypoints which caused confusion, but overall pilots managed the challenges with focus and resolve.

Two new teams entered the frigate competition this evening: Vorpal Bunny Racing and The Red Barons. The Barons displayed an impressive debut performance while the Vorpal Bunnies made a bit of a splash at the first waypoint in Teonusude, where their team captain opened fire on Venture Racing team captain Takashi Kurosawa. CONCORD immediately intervened, causing KanunuÆs Rifter to be destroyed. It was later reported that yet another of his ships was blasted by sentry guns.
Lucas Avignon continued to dominate the frigate class, while rookie racer Godgast Goudiyah of Team Khanid made an impressive second place finish. This has enabled him to slip ahead of previous frigate season champion Thulla Icin in point standings for second place. Demon flir of Scuderia Caille, who finished third place, is also another rookie to keep an eye out for in the coming days.

While Venture Racing Team continues to dominate the interceptor class, Dirtside has suddenly made an imposing presence with the introduction of their latest racer, Rawr Cristina. Rawr has managed several impressive turnouts, including this events third place finish just ahead of her teammate Zelseus. This pushed back the regular Kayleigh Jamieson, while Quintrala limped into ninth place just ahead of the Red Barons.

OVERVIEW
The fourth event of the evening took place last Sunday in the Everyshore region with thirty racers at the starting position. While Venture Racing Team continues to dominate or threaten in all of the classes, Vorpal Bunny Racing has been making itself a nuisance in their efforts by destroying anything in their path. As many continue to adapt to the changing rules and devise new strategies, the competition is fierce as we near the half of the season

The Everyshore featured bits and bobs of everything previously implemented in the League. Dual cans made their presence known and a split path at waypoint two led pilots in separate locations early on. Waypoint five suffered from a malfunction and had to be stricken from the event, enabling some of the lagging racers to catch up with the leaders. Old Man Star proved to be rather meddlesome for some racers to traverse. The password used was ôpebblesö, to liken the name of the region with the flavor of the theme.

A surprise first-place finish by Killjoy Tseng marked a tumultuous evening for the frigate class, ousting the ever dominant Lucas Avignon who graciously accepted his second place prize. Godagast Goudiyah made yet another impressive podium finish, slipping in third place just under a minute behind the reigning season leader.
Vorpal Bunny Racing went on a rampage this evening in the always lively system of Old Man Star, first eliminating Red BaronÆs pilot Kal Jeric0 with the help of VentureÆs Thulla Icin. The tables quickly turned as VBR hastily dispatched Ms. Icin from her frigate before assaulting teammate Malcom Deluna shortly thereafter. The remainder of the season may become rather lively for League racers if this pace continues.

Loras Forsythe, racing veteran turned Vorpal Bunny assassin, racked up several kills for her first run while still finishing last place unscathed.

Demon flir of Scuderia Caille snuck into a close second place, pushing KillJoy back to third. Kanunu bit off a bit more than he could chew at the dual waypoint system of Zinoo, verbally assaulting his assailant Thulla Icin as she forcefully dispersed his Rifter into many, many pieces.

A rather surprising upset for Venture Racing Team, who up until this point have dominated the top two positions in the interceptor category since the beginning of the season. I managed to catch Frontal Impact's team captain Irongut all by himself at a table in a smokey corner of the Daredevil's Lounge with a bottle of whiskey, and decided to ask him some questions...
How did you first hear about the Racing League?
I think I first read about the league on GalNet halfway through season one. I followed the reports for a few weeks and considered taking part but then I moved to Fountain. I rarely returned to Empire space and forgot about racing. I heard about the league again during season two and since jump clones made it easier I decided to enter. My first race was the last race of season two in Khanid and I was immediately hooked.
What do you do professionally outside of racing?
I'm primarily a combat pilot and that's what I do most. But, I also have some duties as an officer of my corporation and an interest in the rig business across several regions so I'm always busy.
Your alliance and team, Frontal Impact, are sponsoring the League for season V. Can you tell us a bit what Frontal Impact is and their goals?
Frontal Impact is a small, combat focused alliance run by my corp - M'8'S. We have experience fighting Empire wars, low sec pirate hunting and 0.0 combat and have had campaigns everywhere from Branch and Tenal to Fountain and Querious. At the start of the year we were based in Placid near the entry points to Syndicate and Pure Blind and had some conflicts with the residents of both those regions. *grins* At one point we had six wars declared against us in a single week.
In recent weeks we have returned to 0.0 to work with our long standing allies Band of Brothers and are now based in Delve. Several of us, myself included, were heavily involved in the siege of Mercenary Coalition territory in Period Basis. Being back in 0.0 is a relief and joy for someone like myself that has spent most of my time as a capsuleer there although it does make it harder to attend the races. I had to miss the recent Everyshore race because I was stuck in a Megathron, living out of a POS for several days, and unable to clone jump during the attack on 1-NJLK.
Originally Frontal Impact was created as a way to further our corporate goals and ease certain administrative problems. Now we are looking to expand and recruit a small number of like-minded corps to join us. M'8'S has held system sovereignty in the past and we hope FI will claim space on the outer-rim in the near future.
What is your favourite ship to race in and why?
Hmm a difficult question. *lights cig* I love the speed and agility of Hornet II my current Ares. But, despite a poor result I think I'd have to say Angelfire, the Dramiel I flew in the Season 4 faction frigate race. She was a gift from an old friend in the Cartel and has a feeling of power the Ares lacks.
M'8'S, your team's former name, has consistently dominated the assault frigate class thanks to Dougalar. Will your team be reclaiming the title for a third season this time?
My main priority for this season is to reclaim our title. For the last two seasons Dougalar has been the only pilot with both the speed and consistency to win the Assault Frigate class and I want to see that record continue. Success in the other classes would be nice but not at the expense of her title.

What team and individual do you anticipate being your closest rival?
Back to the difficult questions? *takes long draw of cig* All the teams are strong... VRT with their numbers and Takahashi to lead the pack. Scuderia Caille were very fast last season and Quintrala's students are doing well again this season. Dirtside have a strong line-up, they didn't have an entry in the AF class at the start of the season but with Darina flying in the class again in recent races I am keeping a close eye on her and her team. And, I'm sure Jude Kopenhagen flying under Kayleigh's tutelage at Dragonstar will cause some upsets. They're the main ones that concern me at the moment but it will be half way through the season before we know for sure.
If you had to destroy a rival pilot's ship, who would you take the greatest pleasure in dispatching?
*laughs* You're a wicked woman Gyra! Although there have been racers I planned to shoot it was purely due to competition, nothing personal, and in the end it wasn't needed. There is no-one I wouldn't shoot if it helped my team but also there isn't anyone in the league I actively want to shoot. If there was then you'd already know about it, I'm not known for my patience.
It's just business, eh? The subject of combat in the league has been a devisive topic between pilots. What would inspire you to fire on your fellow pilots?
You may remember at the tail end of Season 3 I unexpectedly switched to the Assault Frigate class for two races. It was before we had the current team structure but at the time M'8'S was allied with Dougalar's corp Imperium Technologies. My own third place in the Interceptor class was already guaranteed so I switched classes to protect her from Darina and to ensure she won the first AF title. In the first of those races Darina left the first low sec waypoint just as I was getting into warp scramble range. I was unable to catch her for the rest of the race but in the end the Guristas did my job for me in Saranen. In the second of those races Darina didn't show so my combat skills weren't needed. That was actually the beginning of Dougalar and I working together as a team.
So basically if shooting someone will ensure we win a title I will do it. Also if someone opens fire on one of my team they better be damn sure I'm not nearby because I will be on them before they can fire a second volley.
What is your most memorable moment in the League?
I managed a few podiums in the Interceptor class in Season 3 but I think my most memorable moment came in Season 4. I'm tempted to say flying through the pirate gate camps in Rancer during the last race of the season but it has to be the end of the previous race. Dougalar had achieved an unassailable lead in both individual and team AF titles and she told me she couldn't have won both without my help. That gave me a feeling of pride and accomplishment that still hasn't gone away.
Do you have any advice for new racers to the League?
Ah that's an easy one. Start small, in the frigate class. Don't worry about implants, faction mwd or expensive rigs... just get on track in whatever you can afford to fly. There are a lot of simple mistakes you can and probably will make in your first few races and there's no point spending hundreds of millions till you know what you are doing. Joining an established team can be a huge help too.
What are the origins of your callsign, "Irongut"? Are the rumours of your professional eating career a myth?
*glances round the room and leans forward* It's an old nickname... from when I was a kid. I used to run with a fairly notorious street gang. I got it then... I can't really say more.
*downs whiskey and sits back, smiling again* But hey, if you want to organise an InterStellar Chilli Cookoff I'd be happy to be one of the judges!

I had the opportunity to meet up with team Dirtside's latest sensation, Rawr Cristina.
How did you first hear about the Racing League?
My corpmate Darina was pleading on our corporate network for racers - Up until then I didn't even know about this (I never paid much attention to these sorts of things), so I thought I might as well give it a go.
What do you do professionally outside of racing?
I'm mostly just a combat pilot, really, and a bit of a missile whore at that. It's kind of a necessity, being affiliated with Sansha's Nation and therefore kill-on-sight to half of New Eden. People generally think we're no different than the those pesky rogue Sanshas you find in belts, you know?
Being an active supporter of SanshaÆs Nation, do you find yourself in conflict when forced to engage remnants of SanshaÆs minions in various regions of the star cluster? If fired upon, would you fire return fire?
I don't fire upon Sansha vessels unless they're directly threatening me. Outside of racing it's fine since I can just warp out, but my poor Raptor is really vulnerable to those lasers. Mix that with the fact I'm having to sit there for over a minute waiting for a container to open and well, you get the idea.
If you had to destroy a rival pilot's ship, who would you take the greatest pleasure in
dispatching?
Probably Takashi [Kurosawa]. He's so damn fast, even when he messes up and loses places, he still zooms on ahead. Damn robot... *frowns*
Given the ungainly reputation of Caldari vessels, especially in League racing, what motivated you to fly the Raptor?
I just love Caldari ships. Really they arn't that bad when it comes down to it. I would probably fly a Malediction if I didn't have more important things to train, but after flying half the season in my Raptor it's become sort of iconic, you know? I guess I just like to be different...like everyone else.
Your performance during your rookie season has shaken up the interceptor class, including some of the mainstay racing veterans. What do you attribute to your startling performance thus far?
Oh I wouldn't call it 'startling' heh. Not after Race 5. *frowns*
I've flown Interceptors a lot and many race-specific equipment like getting into warp as fast as possible, landing on containers(wrecks) properly I was all quite familier with, so that all helped to some degree. I would be lying though if I said skill training and ISK wern't also important. *blushes*
What is your most memorable moment in the League to date?
Hmm, it's all a blur really. I'd have to say the first race - it was really an odd first experience to see thirty frigates piling up on a waypoint like that, you would think they'd just killed a high ranking officer or something and were all desperate for the precious, precious salvage...and to see that on every waypoint. I didn't expect it to be that close!
If you had to choose any other pilot not on your team as a racing partner, who would it be?
Probably Kayleigh [Jamieson]. It's been a fight to keep up with her in every race, usually decided by who screws up the most. Plus we're both trying to helplessly oppose the evil, opressive VRT domination this season, so it would only make sense. *sticks out her tongue* |

Do you have any advice for new racers to the League?
Train Evasive Maneuvering if you haven't already.
Not only will it bring you a step closer to flying Interceptors effectively, but you'll be saving precious seconds both warping about and be less clumsy on your approaches. Nothing quite as annoying as overshooting by ten kilometers only to turn around and overshoot again and, well, you get the idea. *sticks out her tongue*
One thing I learned after the first race was that speed itself really isn't as important as you'd think, at least for an Interceptor pilot. I suppose if you fly the much slower frigates it wouldn't matter as much... but what would I know?
What are the origins of your call sign?
In truth, It's always been a mystery even to me. My memory has been messed with so many times I barely remember what I ate for breakfast this morning. Maybe 'Rawr' is an acronym I was given as part of my work for the Caldari? They wern't kind enough to tell me much about that sort of thing.
