A little about myself first, I've only played EVE for a few months total (subscribed on and off), so I do not claim to have extensive experience many other longtime players will have. However, I do like to check out lots of different online games and noticed that many formerly pay-to-play games have switched to a microtransaction model (RF Online, Archlord, Anarchy Online, CABAL Online, etc). Other successful microtransaction games include MapleStory and FlyFF. Could this work in EVE? Should it be applied to EVE? Here are a few of my thoughts on how this can work out:
1 - Selling 'storyline' modules in game shop: many of these modules have low requirements and would appeal to a new player willing to pay for top equipment. 2 - Selling starbase charters in game shop: this might allow players who are more interested in the station management aspect of the game to get into it easier? 3 - Selling faction ships in game shop: perhaps PVP players might like this option as an alternative to making ingame money? 4 - Selling +6 implants, game shop only mainly for the longtime players. 5 - Selling "instant level 3 skills" in game shop, allowing new characters to rapidly acquire skills for functionality. For instance, a new player wanting to get into PVP might buy "Instant Propulsion Jamming Lv.3" instead of spending time training the skill. Of course skill pre-requisites would have to be met and time commitment needed to max out. Someone wanting to explore PVE might be interested in buying the exploration skillset.
As a rather casual player of EVE Online, the game is getting to the point where I don't really find a monthly fee worthwhile compared to the many other "free" games available. I'm sure I'm not the only person to think this way about the game. Instead of the monthly fee system, I think a microtransaction system might be great for the game and also allow for an influx of new players. Anyway this is just my thinking and does not represent my corp/alliance in any way.

No, no, no. Even with a monthly fee already in place, having a game shop would divide the server into people who could afford to buy all of the extras and those who can't. There would be new players running around with +6 implants and 1 bill, and don't try and argue that it won't happen - there are idiots who will spent $200 on a game just to be 'leet'. ---- In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Addams |

Edited by: Vladimir Nabokov on 21/03/2008 04:19:55 I probably should have anticipated the negative responses. I'm just trying to think of some ways to make things fun for new players. One of the other threads in this forum discusses the possibility of doing away with the skill system altogether, and I think the game shop could serve the same purpose. Based on xfire's hours played ranking, EVE is behind 4 microtransaction games: Silkroad, MapleStory, FlyFF and CABAL Online in hours played. Shouldn't something be done to address this? There's so much competition out there.

never cared if EVE was the biggest game out there. all that the giant advertising drive has done is get me more hatemail which is amusing to me, but disappointing at the same time to see that people don't understand the game. ------------

I don't think it is a terrible idea, it is a reality that is being discussed seriously. For example, it was discussed in the Terra Nova Blog on GDC 2008. For those who don't know what Terra Nova is, check out the site for interesting MMO discussion. I noticed the Ren Reynolds articles from the site got referenced for the CSM presentation!
Another example of this trend being discussed is found in this Gamasutra article. Of course there are both supporters and opponents of the idea, but I had hoped the reaction would not be so negative for EVE. |

How exactly would this system help new players? I am talking about the ones who cannot (or won't) drop more than $15/month on a game?

You forgot a few:
6. Selling mission completions in game shop. All appropriate kills, standing gains, bounties, items, and salvage items appear in your hanger.
7. Selling PvP kills in game shop. The price of the kill varies with how many skillpoints your victim has. Once a kill is purchased, the next time your victim is in space, his ship spontaneously explodes. For an extra fee, his ship's loot and salvage will be sent to you.
8. Selling Titans in game shop. Now everyone can have one!

it will not happen, since it will destroy EVE in many diffrent ways.. like who will mine when you can throw Real Life Cash at it and just buy crap, and what is the fun i that.. and if that whod happen i whod guess alot off the old guys and people that love the game as it is atm will quit eve and play a crapy game like WoW...

Won't happen as long as CCP manages the game. And that's a Good ThingÖ
If you want to buy isk, sell Game Time Cards, then buy the items you want. Personally I rather like this system since I don't have to pay for any of my accounts, I just buy GTCs from people who need the iskies via the systems that CCP put in place. At least that's a win-win situation for all the players.
And it fits in to the system that CCP has designed. Everything is player driven in the game, CCP's profit is in the monthly fee, that's it. Everything else is for the players. There are ways around almost every "sink" in the game with the exception of NPC only station fuels. Everything else can be done for free, or for charge payable to another player.
On a side note though, my sec status would look like crap if this ever did happen, because I'll admit to endless joy suicide ganking "storyline" shop buyers --

Except of course that paying customers will undoubtedly be protected: "Whaa - he blowed me up. I paid for this. Whaaaa!"
I really hate this "instant" culture that seems prevalent at the moment. People who don't want to work for anything just want it now without pain or effort.

And this.
Eve has never catered to people who want instant gratification, yet people keep asking for it to be. No. Go play wow.

Meh. I truly support this idea.
It means
a) I get more business, as people start buying more faction modules thinking they are "better"
b) My regular suppliers get more business, as the above clueless posters get ganked and killed and the modules go through yet another market cycle
and
c) Sweet carebear tears, as the above players whine that their $15 Estamel's Invul field didn't make a difference when they tried to run the gatecamp.

On a serious note, however. No. -- My Sig got pwnt by Cortes :( |

it would break the game SOOOO much that it would become pointless. atm its allready ruined by ppl who buy isk for real cash.
the skill system is what makes EvE unique and as you just want instant gradification (spelling :P )

It will never happen. CCP love the game as much as the players. This would destroy the loyal player base (as opposed to kiddies who want to have a pay'n'play'n'leave). It will never be implemented. |

Uh, no, something shouldn't be done and to be honest, there is NO online competition to EVE! Other than that, I won't say no in 17 different ways like the rest have done, I will only add this:
Not everyone uses Xfire, so Time Played is irrelevant...

I hate Korean MMO's, they're not games, they just bank on people's addictions and weak impulse control.
You start off playing "free" and end up charging this that and the other, pretty soon you're paying $200 a month for "end game."

Edited by: Yorlock on 21/03/2008 10:21:29 So, some stupid 12 year old kid can charge 500 dollars+ on his daddys credit card, and suddenly get lvl3 in all skills overnight? I dont think so, But, since you look like you suplement your ingame income already...Ill be scanning your fitings... and pirating away those faction loots.... Be seeing ya soon punk, unless you do us all a favor and go play Lineage 2 or Guildwars. those games revolve arround how big your [censored],( hell i say it.. 'credit limit' )is.. Its not a game, its not fun if all you do is charge NON EXISTANT virtual items in a lame attempt to feel better. So you fly a frigate... learn what your ship can do well, and what it cant. Use the ingame methodes provided. We have ALL had to take the time... I dont think players that go back to 2003 would appreciate skill purchases. If you are that intent on throwing another 500-1000 dollars away, whats ever went wrong with with Vegas? New Orleans?{there is a sweet little entertainer by the name of "Chastity" down on Burbon St that needs your tips} Mardi Gras? These are things were are supposed to blow wads of cash on. Not virtual items.

We already sortof have them, GTCs -> isk -> whatever you want.
But microtransactions are mainly a mechanic for the minor MMOs that can't get into the pay/month market due to lack of content/polish/niche. There was this minor indy MMO that i used to play, with about 500 concurent users or so, and selling ingame items worked very well to keep it alive.
But in the end such games don't get anywhere near as much money as EvE, LOTRO, WoW, etc..

The tools for a new player to get a jump start (if they want to)are already there. 1. They can sell time cards officialy and legaly in the marketplace for in game ISK. 2. Or they can buy an already developed character.
Adding the type of micro-transactions you suggest would add nothing to the game, and destablize the game economics badly. Its only benefit would be a financial one to CCP ... which of course may be why they end up using something like this. But if EVE history is anything to judge by CCP are commited to a specific vision of the game and I cant see this being introduced.

For the love of the EVE-gods, stop trying to make EVE into something that it never was meant to be (also looking at the DEVS for this, EVE is dumbing down and they're caving in to subscription numbers).
