Hi,
It is time that insurance was given another look, as it stands it is pointless insuring T2 ships as insurance being based on an arbitary npc minaral cost means that even the platinum insurence bears no relationship to the actial market costs of the ships.
A suggested solution would be to base the insurance on the market avarage of the ships in the current region at the time of taking out the insurance, this figure already exists on the market so should be fairly easy to implement;
It would also mean that players would have the option of checking other regions for better deals, which is fairly like the real world, and would add to the game play options.

T2 ships are meant to be expensieve, luxury items. Being unable to insure them for any sizeable amount keeps them from becoming better in all ways than T1 ships

I have recently invested a few hundred million into t2 ships. I would love for them to be insured; however this would be a huge disadvantage to new players. The idea at the moment is this: any corporation can take a bunch of t1 cruisers and outfit them with loot that you got from a couple of missions and start a roaming gang. Each cruiser costs only 5 to 10 mill each so any player who is considering PvP in a cruiser can easily make this in 2 to 3 hours.
The thing is, gang of 30 t1 cruisers will suffer close to 100% loses against a gang of 10 ships of the same class, unless you run or they make a mistake. You will be lucky to get one or two kills. However their ships will cost 60m+ and will be uninsured, while yours will cost almost ten times less but will be insured. At the end of the day the losses that you both suffered are even and you all had fun.
Now consider insurance on T2 ships, since the price involved in building a t2 ship varies on much more then just raw material it is much harder to calculate. If the price is too high, large corporation will be making money of loosing t2 ships. This creates a huge unbalance between established parties and those that are starting out. The reason, is that the way you win a war is by reducing enemy's moral. And seeing (10 to 1) or (20 to 1) kill ration day after day on your n your killboard is very demoralizing especially if you know your enemy is better off after you killed them then they were before.

No, they shouldn't even have the pitiful base insurance.
As said, they are not a necessity, but a luxury item. Insurance is to help people from going totally bankrupt and unable to do anything. If you bought a t2 ship with the last of your monies, though luck, mine in a rookie ship till you get a frigate, then slowly move back on.
If t2 ships had good insurance, why would I fly t1 ships?

Erm t2 insurance works atm it actually covers the price that it costs to make them.
Example.(figures not right)
You try to invent a deimos 1 run bpc twice costing 30 mill each. 1 of them fails 1 of them succeeds.
You then have to build 1 costing 30 mill.
To make a profit you have to sell for more than 90 mill.
For the person who buys it insurance costs 10 mill and pays out 30 mill. So it works out.
Its all to do with invention. If you could buy bpo's of deimos with this scenario they would sell for around 30 mill.
So really it all works out .. its just to make a profit people who invent them need to sell for 3x more than they cost to build.
And incase your a moron all that was a made up scenario but the logic is right.

There are people with the cash, blueprints and production capacity who would love this, because they're able to raise and lower market averages in certain regions at will.

Another very good suggestion would be to remove insurance from the game! Let losses mean something again.
Instead of making T2 more like T1 insurance wise, lets go the opposite way.
Currently a Battleship (not counting in equipment/rigs) will only loose you like 15m ISK when taking into account insurance, and 15m ISK is easily made in an hour doing L4 missions....

Ever tried insuring an Abrams, Apache or Falcon against battle damage?
Don't draw real life comparisons.
