Hi, I'm a Trial player at the moment. I've been mucking about in the tutorial missions for a few days.
I've several posts saying, "train up for whatever you want to do"
Is that possible? For example, lets just say I want to fly Interceptors and only interceptors.
Is it viable for anything? PVE Missions, Player run corps?
Just wondering if you can go into this game with a particular idea for your character build and then get told off and to retrain.
Do people even want certain types of specialties?
What types of advantages do player run corps give?
I'm just trying to get a handle on what things would be like down the line.
The trailer says you might one day fly some giant ass capital ship into battle. But what if I just want the 'fast capable ship' What if you just want to be the best damn scrapheap collector you can be?
Just opinion, but most of the ships are ass ugly, apart from some of the cruisers and frigates. Why people would want to fly some of these space buttplugs is perplexing to me.
Just my opinion though |

Yes it's possible to train up what you want. If you want to fly inty's that is possible.
1 thing to keep in mind, inty's are good in PvP (don't know about them in PvE, but in general higher level missions need larger ships) but keep in mind you might be asked to train for other ships too by a corp. As inty's are usefull but they might also demand you can fly other shiptypes down the line.
Player corps are always looking for some of the special type of pilots, mainly fast tackle, cloaky stuff and most of all logistics.
Advantages of a player corp:
- Community, you actually play with others instead of solo. - Help, people in player corps are always willing to give advice to others and help them out. - More game mechanics open up to people in player corps (POS, wardecs, alliances, SOV).
Finally someone who understands that bigger isn't always better. Yes you might at one day be part of a fight with loads of capitals on field, but even then there is need for smaller support ships (for instance that 1 cyno ship that brings in the capitals).
And people fly the fugly ships because they are usefull. Unless I missed the memo that war/fights are won on who brings the most prettiest stuff to the field, looks don't matter jack Sh**. Ships in EVE are just tools to complete the task you want to do, and the looks of a tool doesn't really matter as long as it does the job it should do. Yes, if you specialize in a ship you can get as good or even better than pilots several years old fly that ship. Interceptors are mainly for PvP. You will always find a group/corporation that will take what you're flying. Logistics are always sought after as few want to play as a "healer". Recon ships are also (especially falcons) are also sought after for PvP. The advantages of player run corporations are friends and usually lower tax (NPC corporations have 11%) on NPC bounties. Again, you will always find a group/corporation that will take what you're flying. I would strongly suggest atleast getting the skills for a battlecruiser/battleship after a few months though. People usually fly ugly ships because they trade look for power.

Thanks for the informative replies guys! The interceptor was just an example BTW.
I'm surprised no one wants to play a healer in this game, since they look like they can take a lot more beating than healers can in other games.

Point is that Logistics are also the first to be shot at by enemy fleets. Break the logi is break the fleet. Inject your skillbook before you leave the station. Ah i see, so it's like a PVP Healer, I don't suppose the Logistics ship can heal itself? |

Every ship in EVE can repair itself by using a local tank. The logistic ships are made to fit remote repair modules (so repairing others). This is mainly used as when you get repairs from logistics you don't have can get rid of your own local tank to fit more modules that help in killing others (more DPS, easier hitting stuff etc.)
Means if you take out the logistics, you take effectively take away the enemies ability to repair ships.
Also it doesn't mean Logi are only used in PvP, we did 10/10 complex once with logistics support. So you can also do PvE with them. But they are made to run in fleets. Generally logistics are brought in a group (or at least a pair), so they can "heal" each other (eve slang is "rep" ie repair). There is nothing stopping you from fitting a self rep module on a logistics, except the rep tends to take a fair chunk of the fittings making it harder to do the job of repping the fleet and can cause capacitor issues so you can't keep going as long... there's nothing stopping you fitting almost anything to a given hull except the fitting requirements and effectiveness of the setup, one of the wonders of Eve is the combinations of hull and modules.
One of the other reasons Logis are sometimes hard to find in pvp pilots is because they don't appear on killmails... depends on how you feel about bragging rights against keeping your mates safe really.
As to the original question, you can chose to fly whatever you want. As with all choices there are some consequences. Limiting what you fly will limit what you can do in Eve to some extent, but having a preference isn't a bad thing. For example, I prefer battlecruisers and cruisers in general, but there are times I'll fly larger or smaller ships if needed. They're just not as fun for me.
Eve is often about adapting to the circumstances you find yourself in, which aren't always your choice. |

Actually a very good and constructive post. Specially the part of where specialization is both good and bad. It makes you very good at one point will it limits you a bit.
And on the logi's not getting on the killmails: Target painters (or any other module) for the win, just get paint the guy for 1 or 2 cycles and you will be on the killmail (with 0 damage though). Thanks for all the information guys. Are there any Logistics based missions apart from the single one in the tutorial? Like "keep these ships going so they can take out the baddies" type thing?
I thought I'd give logistics a go at some point but if there are no missions its hard to demonstrate to the newbie how it works or if they like it..
Also another thing, do people ever use the faction rewards? I can imagine people not minding blow up ISK's worth of equipment, but when its loyality point rewards I wonder if any of that gets any use because people are too afraid of losing them.

Although a lot of this was already covered I wanted to point out something about the 'interceptor only' comment. Being that specialized will probably drive you up the wall, but the path to interceptors also gives you all the regular frigates as well as the 'advanced' frigates (Interceptors (PVP), Assault Frigates (PVP/PVE), Covert Ops (exploration), and Electtonic attack frigates (group pvp) so you would be in a good position to have a mix of ships fairly early on. When you find out what your income stream is like you'll find that the cost of items is relative. I can get up to 35million isk on a single level 4 mission (Angels Extravaganza) so losing a faction ship or item in combat may not be a really big concern to me.

Like to add that "healing" in EVE is very different from "healing" in most other MMOs.
Only place that really uses logistics is the high level incursion stuff, and high level plexes (both PVE). PVP is much more about stealth or DPS spam or giant ships.
So nothing against logistics, but they are nothing like healers in other MMOs... combat in EVE is generally much more DPS biased... |

Also, anything you can buy on faction rewards, you can buy on the market. Generally, good ol ISK is what matters. If you do the conversion, most faction reward stuff ends up going for 800-1100 LP per ISK, which makes it much easier to just buy it off ISK.
Not like arena gear in WOW or something... |
