Yes this is a confusing statment. Here are some use cases. And then i'll explain it in better detail.
First time i wanted this was while i was salvaging. I'd want to approach two objects and be within 20,000 km from them for my tractor beam. Naturally i click in the middle of the two objects and hope for the best. Naturally my results will vary based on their position in relation of me and eachother. So i was seeking feedback from my computer, "Well dave, on your current course you will end up 12,000 km from object A, but 21,000km from object B". Here's a diagram of this example (very crude, yes i know)
Axx|yyB (i want to know distances for "x" and "y") ב\בבב|בבב/ בב\בב|בב/ בבב\ב|ב/ בבבב\|/ בבבבבme
Next example. I'm fighting. Constantly reminding myself to not directly approach my enemy. I click off to the side of my enemy to approach at an angle, but at the same time i'd like to wind up at my optimal distance when i have reached maximum transversal velocity. At that point i'd like to enter into orbit and let my guns do the talking. But there is no way to effectively do this or tell my ship to "Approach ship x at vector, then enter a 1,500km orbit." Here's a diagram. I want to approach E (enemy) buy heading to point A and enter orbit when x is equal to my desired optimal range.
AxxE ב\בבב| בב\בב| בבב\ב| בבבב\| בבבבבme
So maybe what i'm looking for isn't more calculated information on my tactical view to help me accomplish this. But maybe a command that you can learn via a skill, that will do the following things for me? I know that after a while i'll inherently be able to do this by my own player skill, but we're talking about advanced ships here. They should be able to handle this on their own without me "guessing". The only limitation here, is that the feature has not been added to the game yet. And with the tactical overlay and UI review that is ondoing (based on listening to the dev chat), maybe this is possible or something similar?
What do you all think?
EDIT: Trying to make my diagrams work :) _______________________________________________

Yeah, the more i think about it. Maybe the initial attempt at this would be extra information on the tactical screen. Considering how dynamic an engagement can become, "auto-piloting" the ship would get tricky and a little involved. _______________________________________________

I still think this would be a neat feature. Any other players out there wanna chime in on this idea? _______________________________________________
