Edited by: Andrue on 02/04/2008 12:58:26 Me and corpies used to go there to practice ratting several times a week. This was back in 2004 though when low-sec (at least in Domain) was friendly and mostly empty. We even remember sharing the belts with other people.
Actually that's one of our corp urban legends. We are sure that the two of us used to cycle round the belts in Reyi taking on rats in different belts. The strange thing is that Reyi only seems to have three or four belts.
We were both only in cruisers but I still fail to see how to two cruisers could spend a saturday afternoon sharing four belts. This was also before the security adjustment (visual) at least so our theory is that Reyi is not the system it once was. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran)

Well...technically in 2002 when I was in beta test. Joined a 0.0 corp (no alliances back then) and we had an entire region to ourselves. The rats were hard though, much harder than PvP gatecamps these days.
I've been back there since, but not often.

I first started taking strolls around low sec when I was 2 weeks old or so, got a frig blown up by a pos at 4 weeks (lawl), and moved to 0.0 at about 9 weeks I think it was when I got to the point where I could handle most Lv4s and realized there wasn't much left in high sec for me.
I've certainly lost some ships and it hasn't been easy living out in 0.0 as a newb, ratting where I am isn't nearly as profitable as empire Lv4s.
The overall of it is I've traded a lonely but posh and high income mission runner life for a low income pvp life with a group of people I like.
To me, that's a big improvement and the hardships are becoming easier to deal with as I learn, but I can certainly see how this scares people off.

I had about 3M SP when I went to live in 0.0 - about 2 months after I started playing, give or take a week.
On my first jump into EC-P8R I encountered a "bubble" and my poor Drake was wtfpwned with all my stuffs in it.
Ah well, I got into a frigate and a corpmate scouted me up through Nonni and I made it to o-2. The Corp set me up with a new Drake and off I went, like a little baby duckling swimming out into the big wide river for the first time and OH HEY WHATS A VAGABOND WTF HE IS SHOOTING ME MY MISSILES DONT WORK!!
Bought a second damb drake and learned to have local open in a seperate window from then on...

I left high sec about a week into my trial. From what I remember everyone in the rookie channel was like "OHHNOES!!1 You're gonna die!", the admin of the channel even reinforced the views of the screaming newb channel monkeys (I wonder if this has anything to with low sec having such a small population?).
What I found was far from that - lots of empty systems, plenty of agents giving me a over million a mission and a chance to practice my pvp skills in my Rifter.
I joined a pirate corp straight after my trial expired and have lived in low sec, pirating, ever since.

I went into low-sec about three to four months after starting my character. I saw the various statements regarding low-sec in my NPC corporation chat, then I read some of the posts on these forums trying to refute those statements. There were claims that low-sec contained something making it worth wild despite a stack of evidence to the contrary, so I decided to take a look for myself. Since then I've wandered through and spent time in almost every low-sec region in EVE.
My experience with low-sec is that the NPC corporation chat, though exaggerating some points, is not far off the mark. I found empty systems, pockets of often rude and starving pirates, and alliances that appeared to be in the fetal stages of development. There really is very little value in low-sec unless you enjoy beating back the starving with a stick on a regular basis. I do however think it is fine as it is. The only effort that should be expended towards low-sec is making sure other players considering a visit there get a balanced and accurate picture of what to expect once they arrive.

There have been some fairly intelligent posts by some new folks to the game in those threads but they seem under the misimpression that low-sec or 0.0 is inaccessible to rookies unless you have a ton of SPs and are flying BSs. I'm sure they aren't alone among rookies in this.
While heading into low-sec or 0.0 at a young account age is probably not the norm I believe it's a lot more common than rookies and even many long-term high-sec huggers suspect. If I'm right and the thread fills up with many folks that headed into low-sec or 0.0 as rookies on their first account, then maybe this batch of rookies will take some of the constant rants by a vocal minority against low-sec in particular and 0.0 with a grain of salt. If I'm wrong and hardly anyone went to low-sec or 0.0 as rookies? Well then I guess it makes me special.
So, please post with your main (alts can't really be counted tbh) and tell us how old your first account was when you went to low-sec or 0.0 for an extended or permanent stay (dipping your toe in the water a handful of jumps doesn't count either) and what you flew primarlily. And finally, are you still there?
Me: I went to low-sec and never looked back at the beginning of my second day playing EVE. I didn't join an established corp. Myself and some fellow rookies formed our own corp and made our way successfully. By that I mean we did what we wanted (PvP, missioning, ratting, industrial and a few even did some mining) and we never wanted for what we needed to enjoy the game.
For the first few months I flew a Rifter almost exclusively while I worked learning skills up. I got kills and got killed and met some great folks (usually the ones that blew me up). I've only been playing about 10 months but am never planning to live and play anywhere else in this game unless the devs try to pave low-sec and turn it into a suburb.
First time in low sec, 15 january 2004. First time 0.0 about one week later, 22 january 2004.
Got aggroed in low sec by Kehmor and after 3 heart attacks I started to like this nutty fellow, even he wanted to do me in. In 0.0 on the way back from the Outer Rings I met a fellow in a moa that wanted "to talk", I didnt feel much for that convo.
Cheers.

Day 3. My Ibis got one-shotted in a rather small gate camp.
Went back three weeks later (to the same system, as it happens) to chance the possibility of picking up some nice cheap modules... came back alive since the place was completely empty.

Edited by: motomysz on 02/04/2008 15:04:10 I started out Gallente and was living in Costolle (losec) before I even knew what the difference between hisec and losec was. It was right at the beginning of Red Moon Rising. I just knew that I had to be paranoid.
Edit - My lieutenant was the one who convinced me to play and jumped me directly into a lowsec corp full of newbies who wanted to be anti-pirates... so at least I had teammates.

I (not me specifically as I'm a third account industry/pewpew alt who came along much later) had been playing for almost a year as an empire miner/producer/trader when I got an urge to start a second account with a dedicated pvp charecter. Got him right into a mwd missile kessy and was harrassing the campers at the MHC-R3 gate in syndicate. This of course was when a camp was a few tackling intys with some raxs and vexors to do the dps as BS were still pretty rare.
*sigh* ~longs for the good ole days before teh blobs and warp bubbles.
