Am I correct in assuming the setting 'interval=1' means 'wait for the vertical synch' before rendering another frame?
I am using a TFT panel which can only physically display 60 fps, and with interval=1 my frame rate is locked at 60 fps.
This is perfect right? With interval=immediate, i can get 350 fps, but only 1 in 6 of those will i actually see. The rest just get lost as wasted power if my assumptions are correct.
If the above assertions are true, why not set interval=1 as the default CCP? Might be doing your bit for the planet (our real one) :)

Because if I remember correctly that means that the FPS can only work at certain rates. So if someone isn't capable of running EVE at 60fps or whatever constantly, they may get much worse performance with the interval set to 1 compared to other settings, which is why it isn't the default setting.

I was under the impression that it didn't force the computer to render exactly 60 frames per second, it only made it so the maximum amount of frames per second is 60. In fact, when I have "interval one" selected, quite often my framerate will drop well below 60.

There are some cases where setting v-sync will increase your performance, but this is probably with older computers.
The big thing with v-sync is that some LCD monitors (or most) cannot display high refresh rates without tearing. Tearing is ugly and annoying, so if you want to get rid of it, you turn v-sync on.
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

Good point raised above. I should have added that if your computer takes longer than 1 frame to render, then you will be waiting for the *next* vsynch. In this case on an LCD screen the most you could get would be 30 fps.
If the assumptions in my OP are correct, may i suggest all users who have fast computers such that they reach the same fps as the refresh rate of their displays, all change to using interval=1?
Unless you have a really cold computer room, and need the heat given off by the graphics card when rendering the frames you will never see.

I don't think it's that simple. I've been running with interval=1 for a while now and my FPS is mostly pegged at 60 (gotta love the 8800GT) but in really complex renders it just gradually drops. I've never actually see it go lower than the mid-forties either.

Based on my experience I think it's an excellent idea.
As regards heating your room it's worth noting that if your heating is normally provided by localised fuel burning (central heating, log fire etc) it will be more efficient to let that pick up the slack rather than using electrical equipment. Electricity supplied over a national grid is rarely better than 30% efficient and even a crappy old gas boiler is better than that.
Whether you like that idea because it saves money or saves the planet is up to you. Either way it's good advice -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran)
