I have a Shuttle computer at home. For the most part I love it. It has an integrated sound card which is perfectly satisfactory. At least until the mic input stops working completely. I bought another mic hoping that that was the problem. It wasn't. Since a mic is absolutely vital to fleet combat in EVE I had to do something. I considered a few options:
Use my work laptop as a Ventrillo stationGet an addon sound cardGet a USB sound device Now, I prefered a boom mic, because I have pretty nice speakers and like to use them for the game. And I don't like using headphones when I don't have to. Using my work laptop is a PITA. But there was a time crunch. Being that my corp will shortly be at war I needed something fast. So I went to Office Depot and started hunting for a USB soundcard for my still functional boom mic. They didn't have any. But they did have a couple of USB headsets. So I grabbed a logtiech one and went home. Turns out it completely rocks.
Those of you that are even slightly familiar with my posting know I rarely give complements, so you should pay special attention when I say this thing kicks ass.
It's not even the particular model I don't think, but the mere concept of a USB headset. And here's why: Not only can I use it for quiet mode gaming since it's a stereo headset, but I can set vent to use the soundcard for ouput, the headset for input, hang the headphones around my neck and it ends up being a better setup than the boom mic I had before, since the mic stays close to my mouth no matter how I lounge about in my chair.
Luckily - since logitech's software and drivers are usually utter garbage - there weren't even any drivers or software to install.
For the interested, the particular headset I have is the Logitech ClearChat Comfort USBÖ. It was $30 at Office Depot.
I haven't tinkered with it much but it does have volume buttons and an EQ selector on the right earphone. - Support fixing the UI|Suggest Jita fixes|Compact logs |

I agree. I really like being able to use my speakers for game sound-effects or whatever and my USB headset (also Logitech) for all my voice-comms, or even music or whatnot. Then I can turn my speakers up or down and not have to fiddle with in-game volume. Plus I have the option of using the headphones for all sound if I need to be quiet.

They are very good. Been using a usb headset now since last year, probably about september time, and havn't looked back since its considered a new device and you can mix and match your inputs and outputs they are just damn useful.
Recommended mine to my lady and she is quite happy with them too. Mine is a Trust headset, the only annoying thing is the flashing blue light all the time on mine, but i have found it useful once or twice so i guess its ok.
