IÆve been playing EVE for quite some time (despite the age of this character), and IÆve really come to enjoy the awesome universe that CCP has created. The backstory, the ships, the depth of everything and the player alliances are all pretty damn unique in the MMO world, lag or not. As such I would like to see CCP (and my) investment safe and sound, but my confidence in the ability for CCP to do this has been reduced somewhat after reading this article. In short, there is one security consideration that as far as I am aware has never been satisfactorily addressed. The threat of a Zombie Incursion.
Before I go on, I feel that I should discuss the natural and man-made anti-undead measures:
CCP Headquarters û Reykjavik, Iceland Advantages: Self-Sufficince û Iceland can produce much of its own energy, reducing the impact of a global societal collapse Geographical Isolation û The fact that Iceland is a small landmass whose only entrances are by air or sea makes it less likely to be swamped by zombies (assuming the underlying virus does not spread beforehand) Cold Climate û Zombies are hampered by extreme cold, as they lack the ability to regulate their body temperature. In addition, viral entities are hampered by cold Low Population û The low population density can prevent zombie concentrations from reaching the critical mass at which the military can no longer contain them Beer û The popularity of bear means the unpopularity of water, and viral agents cannot easily survive in beer but can easily survive in water
Disadvantages: The Capital û Capital cities are more vulnerable to zombie infestations, possibly due to concentration of government administration that breeds panic and confusion when locally threatened Limited Local Food Sources û Iceland must import much of their food from other nations, increasing the likelihood that viral agents or zombies could cross via sea Limited Military û The Icelandic military hasnÆt really won any wars lately, have they?
CCP Server Location û London, England Advantages Easy Fortification û Server buildings are geographically simple, making them easy to barricade Ample Supplies û Supplies of food and ammunition are never far away Powerful Military û The british military is quite competent, allowing them to deal with a Zombie Infestation well
Disadvantages Population Center û London is a highly populated and dense city, leading to massive zombie hoards that are difficult to contain and barricade against Extensive Ventiliation û Servers require lots of cooling, making them vulnerable to airborne viruses and power outages IT Employees û IT employees are known for being physically weak and relatively timid during the daylight, which can be a problem considering that zombies are most active at night Keeping the space-lanes free since 2007. |

CCP has serious security issues when it comes to protecting their HQ and Servers against a potential zombie infestation û an issue that is very relevant to me considering the investment I intend to make in this game and this character (well, my main at least). Zombies are a reality even if a remote one, and if they do not take the time to protect themselves than I cannot continue to play, as I cannot be confident that my effort would be lost in a single grisly night of terror. A certain other game has gone out of their way to ensure that their employees and players are well-informed regarding the threat of unlife, and while I know that CCP does not have the budget or developer time that Blizzard does this is an incredibly important issue that needs to be addressed. Thoughts? Keeping the space-lanes free since 2007. |

There is also other benefits which protect our headquarters. In summer we have over 23 hours of daylight, this helps thwart any plans at an invasion until the winter where they will then be hampered by ice and snow. Our isolation also serves us as their is much less migration and it is easy to lock down our airspace fast and patrol the sea for any drifters where the current and prevailing winds also assists us in narrowing down our search pattern to the west atlantic mostly when out on zombie ship patrols.
Whilst the food sources are limited they are sustainable albeit with much more limited choices, however in light of a zombie apocalypse, we would prefer survival at the cost of not having too much imported food which indeed carries the risk of infection. Talking of infection, there are few migratory species which may well be at risk from birds to whales. These will of course be screened to see whether or not they can be vectors for any spread of the disease in the food chain.
Also, whilst Icelands military is not numerous, they are a hardy folk who along with local citizens can be formed into an elite zombie fighting unit. This is aided by CCP and its staffs long term training and expertise in both strategy, planning, tactics and management which will allow us to direct and spearhead icelands response after the apocalypse.
The servers in London can be run remotely as long as their is power and a connection. If necessary we would establish links via satellite to maintain a feed on the station and source local power by installing a tubular solid oxide fuel cell in the structure to help power Tranquility long after the national grid dies. Should London become an issue where national grid power infrastructure degrades and quickly deactivates we will conduct a large scale operation to secure the servers and move them to iceland where they will be relocated to a secure facility.

As zombies do not need sleep, and they can be trained, as seen here, why not just import them to a secure facility in iceland, and have them fix Jita lag?
This in itself would cut CCP's overhead by a significant amount, as they do not need to be paid, and will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without the need for sleep.

The real problem with Zombie attacks and EVE are the servers! They are located in London which has been proven to be a prime Zombie target time and again.

Ah, one thing that I did not take into account was the very long days. In addition, even Prism X, who I imagine rarely sees the light of day or the opposite gender, would be hardened against the negative effects of sunlight.
Though studies of this effect are limited, I think that Zombies would have a very hard time crossing the ocean floor, especially at the temperatures the Atlantic is known for having. I'd also assume that most SONAR-bearing vessels would be able to detect the movement of a large zombie herd.

Makes sense. I would be willing to believe, however, that Zombie Whales might pose more of a military threat than an infection threat as they are large enough to threaten patrol boats, but would undoubtedly fully consume anyone unfortunate enough to be thrown overboard.

Indeed - in many ways the forums can resemble a zombie hoarde, slowly shuffling toward a suspected location of living meat and moaning loudly.

My primary concern is the emotions that may cause otherwise sane people to act irrationally in an attempt to rescue those they care for. In many cases this only results in the infection spreading further and the loss of vital personnel to zombification. Given the complexity and lengthy hardware upgrade procedures of CCP's network architecture, I don't think that the developers have any sympathy for their remote IT team, removing this threat.

Well, now that my fears have been assuaged, I am more worried about what would happen in the event of an alien invation.

We at CCP would like to thank you for your concerns and will in this response outline some of the measures taken by us in preparation for a possible Zombie Incursion
- Iceland indeed has a completely self sufficient energy economy and in the event of a gobal Zombie threat would be one of the few places that would be able to run a rather normal society.
- Our research indicates that Zombies do indeed have trouble operating machinery required to travel over sea or air, they are also not likely to be able to survive the swim due to the vicious local wildlife. It is not widely known that the Icelandic government has an ongoing project concerning the training of sharks for this exact purpose.
- Zombies are likely to be very hampered by the cold climate, in fact we have deducted that during the winter they would be completely immobilized if wandering exposed to the harsh local elements
- There will always be casualties when Zombies are involved, but we feel confident that the situation would not get out of control
- There are no bears in Iceland, plenty of beer and breweries though.
- Local government are mere puppets (to CCP) anyway, no real anyway.
- One of the biggest exports is fish, we export most of the best food produced here and the population has been weaned to truly extraordinary culinary experiments over the centuries so it is likely that scarcity of proper food would not faze them. They eat rotten shark for gods sake. Cannibalism is a few steps above that tbh
- Military assets have not been deemed necessary so far, we will all have to fend for ourselves and the strongest will prevail.
- Your estimation of Londons advantages are very optimistic to say the least, there are plans for immediate evacuation of key personnel from there in the event of a Zombie Incursion
I hope this post alleviates some of your and the players concerns regarding this topic, thank you for your time. Ohh Mindy.. |

Indeed - one of the many advantages of being truly energy independent, and an admirable feat for a country with such a harsh climate.

I'm primarily concerned with the spread of a viral infection on a passenger aircraft before zombification occurs. Several studies have shown that the undead, thankfully, cannot pilot aircraft with any meaningful results. Even if they could successfully control the aircraft, ground forces would realize what was happening when the aircraft reported they were on approach to runway "Brains."

Thankyou for the clarification - though I feel that the knowledgebase or corporate website should include this information for easy viewing, you have allayed some of my fears.

CCP are well acquainted with dealing with Undead on the forums (as well as Trolls and other WoW imports) so I think they'll be ok. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
