People should be careful how they play the backstab card.
MC and BoB had a mutually beneficial business relationship. Traditional alliances form for a single purpose or cause, which isn't the case here. They each had different paths in EVE, that happened to intersect. If MC decided the relationship was no longer worth it for them, they could have nulled their standings with BoB anytime without issues.
Up to this point, that's not backstabbing or betrayal.
Some people here are acting like it is, when the simple truth is they only came to BoB for the relative peace and stability of the area. There is nothing dirty about leaving, if they believe BoB is no longer able to provide that stability.
The problem, I think, is that MC got a bit of an ego during the northern war of last year. Fighting prolonged wars with large territories was a first for them. Then they had poor communication and teamwork with BoB itself during the catch invasion, which was also a first for them.
Thanks to newer leaders and a minor superiority complex, they shifted from a mercenary alliance with territorial interests...
..to a territorial alliance with mercenary interests called Tortuga.
Now you're getting into the gray areas. Once MC decided to try their hand at playing "Space Empires", they become competitors with BoB. This doesn't make them automatic enemies or allies.
In my opinion MC had two good choices here. To avoid a potential PR fallout, they could have packed up and set up shop elsewhere. Or they could have stayed in the stations they already had, and conquered additional ones when they fell to the Coalition - refusing to give them back if BoB asked.
Instead they took a third option and encroached on BoB stations they never owned or needed to begin with. That not only made them enemies overnight, but massive opportunists in the eyes of EVE. The opportunism part is what peeves most people off, since BoB had to concede stations they never would have lost if it was a straight up 1v1 war.
Being an opportunist doesn't win you allies easily, but it can make sense sometimes. Unfortunately for MC, they spent years riding a high horse of morality and professionalism. Now all the anti-MC and ex-MC people feel vindicated for their past beliefs about the alliance.
To make matters worse, they effectively sacrificed years of goody-twoshoes rep on a crappy gamble. A gamble that not even the "carebear pets" RISE and CoRM took under far worse situations.
This shows a level of cowardice people don't really expect from a 'hardcore' group. The moment they experience their first tough scenario, they snap, *****le and pop. That makes a lot of anti-MC people happy in the pants, and I hear BoB has gotten several unsolicited offers to help them in annihilating MC.
The part that makes it a very blatant betrayal, is setting standings to the Coalition and actively helping in the conquest of a station they had no interest in for themselves.
And now you have new leaders that are pushing for some holy jihad against BoB, while pretending that its member base isn't facing a huge identity crisis. In this major speech, you hear almost nothing about mercenary business and contracts or how the alliance will continue doing what it was created to do.
People are especially getting a kick out of the TS log because it reinforces their cowardice earlier. They see that MC really fears something for the first time, and their current leaders have no better morale boosting tactic than to fear monger their members for results.
Not just demonizing BoB in a very blatant 180 from just a few months ago, but creating "official" titles and jobs that threaten to make you a scapegoat should you fail. And unless this new leader of theirs FCs heavily to build some real experience, MC will be run by another guy confusing real leadership with roleplaying leadership.
As usual, this is my personal analysis of the situation. Disagree at your peril. :F _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

I kind of thing it's funny Tyrrax's lame xss is the one posting this crap in the thread, I mean really TT, don't you have a corp mate to rob or something?
Partly your misguided, mixed signaled, and theft riddled leadership is what has taken a lot of the steam out of the coalition in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if the little you've been officially caught for isn't the tip of some enormous iceberg. You are now irrelevant and worse, a proven thief.
And to everyone else interested in the BoB / MC potential for a major throw down - most I can suggest is come down to Period Basis, Delve, and the surrounded areas and throw down some for yourself

Damn can't find anything to disagree with there. You win this time DigitalCommunist !!1 *shakes fist*
I think a lot of MC's current and recent problems stem from the fact they haven't really had any victories since they came back from the north, I mean sure they managed to slow IAAAC's advance to a stop with help from what 12 other alliances ?
Then they tried to turn their defense into offense but couldn't make any progress until daddy BoB showed up and held their hand, even then it took way way too long for them to break FAT- and they ran out of steam somewhere during that siege, as soon as it fell MC basically went home to take a break claiming they'd fed F4R to ISS/BoB on a silver platter and that it was simple incompetence on everyone else's part that prevented a GBC victory there.
I'm sure MC would argue that BoB's split priorities and attempt to help RISE and secure their cyno route through providence are to blame for their lack of progress in Catch, but whatever the reason, it really sucked for MC. By the time IAC and co had successfully stopped the ISS offensive into F4R/zxic the rest of the coalition had secured Feyth/Esoteria and the rest of the abandoned regions and BoB switched to bunkering up in Delve in preparation for the Coalition's invasion.
By some miracle Mittani and his guys managed to manipulate MC into quite possibly the dumbest decision ever made in EVE up to that point, truly an amazing display of political and military suicide followed and the Coalition made significant progress while BoB reeled from the "Tortugan" surprise attack in PB.
I'm not going to go into the ridiculous choices MC made after that, since I'm lazy, so I'll just end with this; Thank you Mynas Atoch, you destroyed MC in a way I could never have hoped to match.

Though I think MCs major problem started earlier. Namely with the decision to built a capital ship fleet.
Before capital ships were common, MC had no need to hold territory. With capitals becoming increasingly decisive in alliance warfare, and MCs desire to grow larger in the mercenary business, the decision was taken to find 0.0 space to live in - to support the building of a capital ship fleet.
It was unfortunate that the chosen space was administered by BoB, who were soon to be involved in a large war with most of EVE. But even if the space had been somewhere else, it would have been likely that MC would have gotten involved in the usual 0.0 politics. Not so much out of will to do so, but out of neccessity.
Once you become actively involved in 0.0 politics, it is near impossible to remain completely neutral. Yet, percieved neutrality is a plus for any mercenary outfit. Thus the current troubles.

All of MC's top contracts have been from BoB. Other contracts have resulted in peanuts for ISK, results that last less than a month from when MC leaves, or just failure. So how can you say buddying up to the person who gave you a meaning was their mistake? MC without their capital/super-capital fleet would have no relevance. Just because tomorrow might bring misfortune doesn't mean the last 2 years were a mistake.
