I'm just about to bid on a faction ship in a contract auction. If I win will I be able to insure the ship for the total amount I paid for it in the auction?

Insurance is always related to the basic build price of a ship, not the market price. This is why T2 and faction ships only insure for about as much as their T1 counterparts even though they cost many times more to buy. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

Bummer. Seems a little harsh given how much more they sell for. I can understand that they cannot go around letting players set their own value on items as it would lead to a lot of insurance fraud but still, their must be some system that would allow reasonable compensation for high value items that trade off the Market.

Faction ships are a luxury. They're designed to break the bank, and your soul (when they inevitably pop) Same deal with T2 ships really, only less effective. ...

Not to mention you run the risk of a big gang of rubbernecks suicide ganking you for being in a faction ship. |

the insurance payout of the ship is not linked to SALE price.. but MINERAL price to build them.
faction ships cost allmost the same to build as a normal ship of the same type.
the reason why they cost so much is simple.. they are rare and much better in some cases than the t1 counterpart ---------------------------------- Yes... this is my main. Extreme Troll Slayer...

And not only that for T1 ships, but the T2 insurance is also based on an old set of mineral prices, except minerals are not all that is used to build T2 ships, so the insurance is always going to fall waaaay short. Until T2 insurance is also based on T2 component costs they will remain uninsurable - making the new T2 jump freighters problematic in some ways.
In a sense too, the T1 battleship insurance is a factor in determining the low end mineral prices. If the mins drop too much in value insurance jobs kick in, putting a lower bound on BS prices as well.

i hope they will never increase insurance payouts on t2 ships... that would just break the damn game.

Well yes, there is that, but I do suggest that the current T1 suicide gankers are already pretty effective when they want to be.
It seems to work as the older more skilled chars flying T2 gear tend to be more wealthy, so the T2 insurance shortfall is not a game breaker. The new multi-billion isk T2 JFs tho are new and it remains to be seen how that pans out. (Even motherships are T1)
