Edited by: Riktor Voshek on 20/04/2004 18:15:31 I've had a bit of a look around and I couldn't see an explanation of what this actually is.
I'm currently using 2x 280mm howitzers on my ship, and I see they have an (unmodified) optimal range of 10km. I also see they have this mysterious stat of Accuracy Falloff (I think that's what it's called anyway) of 15km.
I'm experimenting with various ranges and ammos and I'm really curious what this stat effects, especially as I see one of the gunnery lev v skills is a bonus for it!
Thanks for any info, or a link to an in depth gunnery guide!

Right, in basic laymans terms (because that's all I can give yer, being uneddificated in the ways of combat!)
- Optimal Range is the distance at which you do your best damage. - Accuracy Falloff is the distance from your optimal that you still do damage at.
So, with the stats you quoted, you will be able to do damage from 0km out to a maximum of 25km. The closer you are to optimal, the better damage you do. Out to your maximum of 25km you'll not be hitting much, and even when you do, not for much damage. Outside of that, you're going to miss.
For another example, a fictional gun of 20km Optimal and 10km Falloff, can hit anything between 10km and 30km away. Most damage done nearest 20km, and not a lot at all near 10km or 30km. If anything closes to less than 10km or outside of 30km, the gun will be unable to hit.
I think... someone else is free to correct me if I'm wrong --

close but not quite i think
Optimal range is the range at out to which you do full damage.
then from optimal -> optimal+falloff you get steadily decreasing damage.
falloff does nothing to "minimum range" The thing that effects that is tracking. -----

Thanks for the info, guys :) I don't suppose you know if the falloff is linear do you? For example, if I'm at 10km optimal and 15km falloff, then would I be doing half damage at 17.5km?
I'm basically trying to work out if I'm better off using an ammo that does more damage but has less of a range boost, or purely working towards getting my optimal out to 20km. It's all so confusing! And I'm not even going to try understanding how likely I am to hit stuff with various tracking speeds!

I don't know if it is linear...but with projectiles, falloff is less effective on damage as it is on accuracy. I run 1400mm Howizters, and with my skillz I have an opt range of 30 km and a falloff of 70 km. I can hit stuff at 99 km but not very well, but the damage is almost identical to hits I get closer to optimal. Just my observations. :)

Since most rat weapons (other than missles) are relatively short range, range (and speed) are your friend ;)
edited: unless of course, you like getting pounded as you try and close with the rat to within your (short) weapon range ;)

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. What I meant was if I stay at 20km range, am I better off using the lowest damage ammo, but having an optimum very close to 20km, or using a higher damage ammo, but having an optimum of say 13km.
Still not very clear ;) I'm experimenting by myself anyway to see what seems to work for me.
