So I made a noob to hang out with my kid as he gives eve a try (another wow head converted!). Anyway, I've petitioned quite a few isk spam bots so far.
It's a bit of a never ending fight and after awhile seems a bit pointless. In fact, I almost feel like I'm doing the people in the SWA channel a disservice by making these petitions. Now why would I think that?
For example, this pops up:
***** > www THISISCRAP com 100M+6%Free= $6.59 1000M+6%Free=$65 1500M+6%Free=$97 ISK and ITEMS 2000M+7%Free=$130 2500M+7%Free=$162 3000M+7%Free=$195 5000M+8%Free=$324 www CRAPCRAPCRAP com
I quickly make a petition pointing the GMs towards SWA channel and *****'s spam.
- Meanwhile, most people in SWA have simply blocked *****
A little while later the GMs get around to my petition, spend some time monitoring the channel (i presume), give ***** the boot or mute him, or whatever it is they do.
- 20 minutes later there's another back doing the same thing.
Now, I don't mind spamming petitions to counter the spamming spam bots. But my motivation is dwindling.
I need a pep-talk, CCP. Why am I doing this?
Because I'm starting to feel like part of the problem...

Petitions are always needed.
As we mentioned in a previous thread we have awesome new tools to prevent ISK spamming, however we need your help.
If one happens to get through we need a petition to prevent any others from getting through as well.
The fight against ISK spammers/sellers is starting to show progress and with your help we hope to finally beat them!

CCP should add cookies to the game and give them to people who petition

ISK spamming seems to have pretty much vanished for me. TY to the OP and company, TY to CCP. There are only 3 sites that I saw the whole time they were on thier bender and that was true of all the games I played. Get together with all the MMO's and send a fleet of lawyers.. That should calm them down. |

So am I assuming too much to expect a certain spam content to be caught after I petition a few times? Because this is day 3 or 4 now and it's pretty much the exact same stuff.
All it feels like I'm doing at this point is defeating people's blocks by causing these guys to roll another character.
If you tell me that petitioning the exact same content, over and over, just spammed by different characters actually has some value, then fine, I'll keep at it.
But I'm really starting to feel like the guy sent after a left-handed mop. And the practical output of all this is that some people are actually spammed more because of me.

My guess is they need people to petition ISK sellers when they seem them in order to gather as much info about them as possible in order to do another version of whatever they did in Trinity 1.1 to reduce the amount of ISK sellers so much. Without that information I'm guessing it makes it much more difficult for them to ascertain how ISK sellers are getting round whatever CCP impletement.

It definitely has a lot of value.
It helps us track down and ban them all.
I can't go in to details of how it works I'm afraid, but rest assured you are helping us defeat them by filing a petition.
Please file a petition asap in the ISK spammer category as soon as you see one.

Can I have a discount in the Eve Store once I hit 50 isk spam petitions?
(thanks for the pep talk)

Yes, definitely good to know you actually encourage us to take action and let GMs know of what happens.
I'm all up for that.

Edited by: Abyssal Angel on 12/04/2008 20:10:33 It's good to know that petitions are useful, nevr really doubted it. But.
Please make it easier to petiton faster; something like:
rightclick character choose "block"->submenu petition for spam /isk spam.
Very easy, very fast, you'll get the same amount of information as today, perhaps add an option to just type in channel they're spamming in.
I bet 1 t2 fitted blaster megathron that you will see a vast increase in number of actual isk spammer petitions.
Up for that bet? FixedYay! have a cookie - Deckard

since we have a GM in the topic, i would like to ask for a new "report" command on the right click menu. the actual petition system is way too clumsy and slow, with too many categories and i myself have cut down my number of petition cause everytime i file one i loose about 5 minutes of play time.
also, it would be quite useful if we could directy select a chat or mail message and use it as a base to file a petition through this wonderful "report" command i introduced before.

I fully second this. It just takes too long to submit a petition via the current route. You end up having to try and find the name of the toon in question, and then type in a random series of letters, and hope you got it right.
Far easier would be a right click 'report' option against the name in the chat window that automatically sends you GM's the text in question (ie the advert) together with the channel, and a time stamp.
Even better (in my book) would be to prevent trial account players from typing in public channels, other than new player help, until they subscribe or guarentee their adherance to the T+C's with a credit card on penalty of a months subscription if they break them.
Or, giving us subscribed players the option to either globally, or per channel, filter all trial account players. That way only those that need to chat to this group (such as corp recriuters and the extremely helpfull) need do so.
My two pence.

Bit of an update:
- Have gotten pretty Black-Belt at making these petitions. Can whip one out in under 30 seconds.
- I always seem to see one or two of these guys when I first log on, but after a couple petitions things get pretty quiet for quite awhile.
- They're still spamming the exact same content. All they're doing is taking the . dots out of their URLs, so maybe CCP needs to tighten up a REGEX or something.
Quick How-To for any interested in getting their Spam-Petition-Black-Belt - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Click on spammers name in channel to get the Info box. Sometimes the 8s, Bs, 0s, and Os are hard to tell apart in channel (new font new font new font! ><). - Press F12 - Click middle button "File a Petition" - Pick Rules & Policies for category group - Pick Isk Spammers for category - click select - enter spammers name and hit search - enter something like Spamming so and so Channel for title - not a bad idea to paste in some of their spam in description box - click submit
Done.
Thanks to GM Sunshine, GM Medigo, GM Xamother, and GM Ocelot for their quick response times.

When I get their eve-mails, I always petition as harassment. Those bastids! I usually copy and paste the eve-mail into the body of the petition.

They've started using the "you've got a timecode" mail that the website sends out if someone sells you a time code for isk to advertise. |
