I've read numerous posts about ratting in 0.0 space where it seems many people do it. I took my 2nd try today of doing it. Warped to some belts, killed some good rats, but as I was looting these rats I got ganked again for the 2nd time. All of a sudden 7 ships warp in, I get scrambles and blown apart within 15 secs. So 2 trips to 0.0 space, and destroyed instantly. What is it that I am not doing to avoid players from doing this to me?
Thanks

Take a look at the universe map and set statistics to "Ships Destroyed Last Hour", then "Pods Destroyed Last Hour" and then "Average Active Pilots last Half Hour."
This will give you the following information:
A) Risk of Destruction B) Risk of Pod Death C) Likelihood folks are still there looking to do A & B to you
Use as you wish.

7 ships don't "come out of nowhere". They were on local, as soon as you see a name in local that you don't know you WARP AWAY TO A SAFE SPOT IMMEDIATELY. If it's going to take more than 5 seconds for your drones to get back to your ship FORGET THE DRONES AND GET OUT.

+1 - keep local chat window separate from other windows.
+2 - fit a cloak.
+3 - make a few safe spots around the system(s).
when someone jumps into system, u see it in local chat, u warp to a safe spot and u cloak :).
oh... and dont make safespots 100km from some planet or something.
my 2 cents. --------------------------------------

Try a basic course in basics...
Seriously- anyone can kill you in 0.0. You sit in a belt ratting with unknowns in system, you are going to get killed. Get a quieter system, USE local to see who is around, stay alligned, make safe spots, get out if hostiles are incoming.
Its all basic stuff. If you know what you are doing you cna succesfully rat deep in hostile space.

in addition to what the others have said,
dont forget to ALIGN your ship.
Align = point the ship in the direction of you SS(savespot). that will take you less time to warp out and like the others have said. warp out ass soon you see some1 in local, they WILL KILL YOU :)

Certain part 0.0 space is controlled or run by certain alliances and corporation. If you enter there space which they hold you are trespassing. Simple solution to this either join those corp/alliance. Then you can rat without getting ganked non-stop unless roaming gang of opposed corp/alliance show up. Like many of above posters have said Keep Local open seperately and watch who is in the system. You have to be very active dont go afk for a sec u never know who might show up and Second fit a cloak.

Im suprised you didnt learn the 1st time :) but anyway, like already said, you npc in an empty system and warp to safespot the instant someone comes in local. This can be annoying but if you pick a system that is off the autopilot route then you will avoid having to warp from people who are just traveling past.
in over 4 years I have done many hours of npcing in 0.0 and only once got cought (i paid a ransom, didnt get killed) and you guessed it, i got cought when i didnt pay attention to local.
good luck

also fit some or all of the following on your rat raven and you should be safe:
1. Heavy neut <1 or even 2> 2. Jamming drones 3. warrior IIs if you really want to fight that solo inty.
Or better get a Dominix with sentries to rat <No ammo! yay>. Any inties / vaga should be afraid of a properly setup neut domi.
above all, watch local and join an alliance. The above will save you only from a lone ganker or may be two if you are really lucky.

Edited by: AeonPhoenix on 15/04/2008 16:16:24 Edited by: AeonPhoenix on 15/04/2008 16:13:11 I 2nd Razin, nullsec would be far more lucrative to me and probably countless others if it werent for the instant intel local tool automaticly giving you away and having dozens of people on alert out looking for your head.
Thankfully CCP has mentioned they're looking to change local so a pilot only becomes visible if they speak in local, apart from that, you'll still see the number of ships in the area.
Can't come soon enough if you ask me.
For an idea, pull up in statistics an alliance territorial control map of nullsec where you'll see for yourself the parts that are owned by an alliance that'll get you killed very shortly within entering that area. (which is near enough all of nullsec).

Also do not rat in systems which people will be using to get from 1 place to another (known as pipes) instead try and find a dead end system 1 or 2 jumps away from a pipe, though make sure that its not got an enemy station in it.... |

If your going into 0.0 solo and have no idea about the politics of the residents, always watch local. Soon as anyone comes in, get to a safe spot and keep moving. If your in an alliance/corp, they should have standings set so you know who to watch out for. Watching local is your friend in 0.0.

Why would a vaga be scared of a neut domi? Those sentries arent going to hit an orbitting vaga (even without mwd)- so youd have to abandon them and drop warriors. Warriors pop awful quick to a rack of autocannons. So whilst you might be able to break the scram, a domi doesnt hold too much fear for a vaga.

Ratting in 0.0's good, as some have previously mentioned keep local open, dont warp to the deafualt warp in point and fit a cloak. Its profitable if you do it right.

Because neuts are one of the few effectively counters against nanos. Webs don't have the range usually. Neuts can hit as far as a point so if the vaga can scram the domi the most likely the domi can neut the vaga.
Time it right so the vaga is coasting into range and the vaga won't have the cap to mwd out. It'll take a second or two before the vaga figures it out. Switch to something like medium drones and the nano will die quickly with the domi's drone bonus.
At close range with drones taking damage cycle the drones in and out of the drone bay. The domi will have the vaga locked. The vaga can't lock the drones fast enough. Most likely a different drone will be taking damage every time.
The down side is while neuts are effective it takes a bs to fit. And the bs is likely to gimp its setup fitting the heavy neut. Not many ratting setups include scrams, web, cap boosters, etc. Neuts work mostly because of the range. You need the range because the nanos will be fighting on their terms.

Hi there, try ratting in an Assault Frigate. I have used an Ishkur fitted with t2 blasters and 5 drones... sure the NPC battleships don't instapop, but they do go down.
Just make sure you keep an eye on local for a quick exit... anotehr good point to bear in mind is to move away from the belt warp in point.
When you're comfortable in the area, you can think about using a bigger slower ship. If you're starting out though, try an Assault Frigate.

Not so much scared, I wouldn't say, but they're not gonna wait around and see what happens when their cap is gone. The neut does provide some measure of protection.
Of course, one should assume they're scouting for a gang a jump behind, so you can't take a vaga attacking you at face value and should run as soon as they stop jamming.
Naturally, all this only applies if you screwed up and didn't pay attention to local. |

Edited by: Haradgrim on 16/04/2008 18:28:42 Ratting in 0.0 is easy mode provided you watch local.
Edit: forgot to say; make a good off-grid safe spot and fit a cloak, that can be the difference between life and death, plus having a cloak makes traveling in 0.0 easy-sauce!
Personally, I like to grab a dead end system and sit a cloaked scout on the gate in the next system to watch who comes in. Yes it takes a little preperation but I haven't lost a ship since I started doing it.
Also, NPC regions are great since you can dock up at close-by stations and unload/sell your loot.
This also works for 0.0 mining, yeah...thats right...I said the "M" word. |
