Bit paranoid. just use numbers and letters together if you have to. Can't really bruteforce it because ccp's servers will guarateed kick you off. -- I won't not promise to avoid refraining from harming you! .... What? |

login names should never match your in-game name in other words.
They do when you buy a character.
Character transfers should be done via API tbh.

Though I've never tried, when slightly tired I've entered the wrong pass like 10 times and not got a warning for entering the pass wrong so many times.

Now, That is a nice idea.

I've been trying different passwords and once I dont use any non-text characters it work. --- Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

No, rather static. (my intention)

Originally by: torswin Edited by: torswin on 16/04/2008 15:34:42 I am not paranoid, I am just aware of how easy it is to run a rainbow table and get most non-strong tables in a matter of minutes.)
A rainbow table is a pre-built combination of clear text and hash, right? The hash is on their servers so in theory nobody knows the correct hash for your password, so nobody can run a rainbow-style attack.
(As someone mentioned, Rainbow tables exist for Microsoft passwords, but this is the prime example: You need the hash from the SAM for a Rainbow table to work - its nothing but a way to pre-generate hashes from a set of passwords to save time).
So, rainbow tables - no. Regular brute force yes, but over the interwebs thats a pain usually and I hope that CCP temporarily locks out brute force attempts ... oh wait yeah right its CCP ... nevermind.
But for reasons of principle, yes, I support the request for proper password quality.
Edit: W00t the several ppl who talk about rainbow tables but seemingly have no clue what it is. --

How about CCP restore the warning "do not install unchecked third party junk, which might contain trojans and steal your passwords"?
THIS is a gazillion times more likely than a brute force attack.
Other MMOs display that warning. CCP displayed it for two weeks or so 18 months ago (suspiciously after I posted the same thing) and then scrapped it again to post some more useless MOTD. --

Eh? What math are you using?
26 lower case letters, 26 upper case letters and 10 different numbers = 62 different digits. In a 5 digit password that'd be 5^62 which is, 2.1684043449710088680149056017399e+43. |

You're quite right that a Key-logger 'in the middle' wins every time.. as does human stupidity. |

Edited by: Trathen on 16/04/2008 17:22:25 Strong passwords don't save you from keyloggers - which is how MMORPG accounts are usually stolen (usually suckers trying to download "enhancers" without scanning them first). |

That only applies if you can't reuse characters. It is just 62^5 |

Originally by: Vriomiunx I would like to request an upgrade to the password system which makes us able to use STRONG passwords.
EVE allows you to use strong passwords. 10 letter password built from 62 character choices: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789 is as strong as 9 letter password built from 94 character choices: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ0123456789`~!@#$%^&*()_+-=[{]}\|;:'",<.>/? while also being a lot easier to type and remember. |

For Eve, I always use a 63 character, alpha-numeric password generated by Gibson Research:-
https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
You don't need anything stronger than that IMO.
