Hmm well I'd say cruisers -> Battleships -> AF -> HAC -> Command Ship (general all round)
or
cruisers -> Battleships -> Maruader (Carebear... mesa! )
or
cruisers -> Battleships -> captials (capitals for 0.0 shannigans and long term play).

Remember that in EVE, bigger is not always better. Any ships above battleships are usually vulnerable without support - in real life you don't see aircraft carriers going anywhere on their own, and for good reason.
The standard combat ship nowadays is the Battleship or the Heavy Assault Cruiser - if you're looking for a goal, shoot for those first.
Flying things like dreadnoughts and titans may seem glamorous, but the larger ship you are in the more quickly you will attract enemy fire. There's a reason why captains in World War 2 referred to aircraft carriers as "Bomb Magnets." ---------------- Tarminic - 34 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Don't forget that bigger does not equal better, and going for capital ships just because they're bigger is certainly a pretty terrible idea.
But a basic line might look like:
Frigate -> Destroyer -> Cruiser -> Battlecruiser -> Battleship -> Capital/Supercapital
And of course in between them all are the Tech II ships like Interceptors, Assault Frigates, Covert Ops, Stealth Bombers, Heavy Assault Cruisers, Recons, etc.

If he is carebearing, why bother with Destroyers or Battlecruisers? A list of ships based upon the logical length of tiem to train for them doesn't help him
Battlecruisers and Destroyers do fall into a nichT category too...

Thanks.
Yeah, no hurry here. Just trying to figure out long term plans.

I disagree. For a new player a Destroyer can be a worthwhile investment over a Frigate because the extra guns and armour make up for their lack of skills when doing low level missions. When it comes to level 3 missions it's also often a good idea to use a BC instead of a Cruiser or BS.

It may be good for making money to follow the primary T1 series first, ya know.
Frigates for lvl1's, Cruisers or Frigates for 2's, BC's for 3's and BC / BS for lvl4's. It's only a few months of training and afterwards you'll already have nice support skills to catapult you into a more specialized direction, plus you'll already have monetary resources due to your missioning.
But that's just my 2 isk.

I found battlecruisers a nice intermediate step from cruiser to battleship. I found them a bit nimbler and cheaper allowing me to transition into Battleships without fear of needless ISK waste. T2 variants are good toys along the way. If you are looking to just print ISK in missions don't worry about T2s right away.
Just remember the jump from Cruiser to Battle Ship is actually a long leap considering support skills. You may find yourself in L3 missions training skills for L4s.
Don't even think about training Titans for a long time. Unless you want to waste your time....

Don't forget the line:
Frigate -> Industrial -> Mining Barge (-> Exhumer)
