noob player here, approx 20 hours playing time. I took a mission to deliver some documents to a station several jumps away, did that and thought I'd check out the asteroid belt to see what minerals were there as I hadn't been to that system before - and to see if there were any easy looking pirate ships.
I spotted an enemy ship and went to approach, checked "show info" and it said "threat level high" and "likely to attack any ship that approaches" - hadn't seen that before - so I stopped the ship but that enemy is coming towards me - flipped the ship over and went to top speed - blam shields down to 70% - targetted a station and hit "warp to" - blam blam shields down to 10% - and I'm gone.
Okay put that down to experience and make sure I always check info before closing.
Docked at the station to have a look in the market to see what is selling cheap - then I notice at the top of the screen it says "aggression countdown : x minutes". Had a look at the online help and can't remember exactly what it said but it sort of implied that I'd been the aggressor? was that the act of checking the ships info / details as I don't think I even put a lock on that ship? Did I do something wrong?
I posted in a different thread and now know that the starting ship is pants and I'm looking to buy something better now

Oh man, the first hours in EVE were fun :D
K, the aggression countdown. As long as it's yellow, don't worry. You get that when shooting rats (NPCs) and honestly, after over 2 years in EVE I still don't know if it actually means anything. You also get flagged for aggressing rats if you didn't shoot them. Or even lock them, as long as they lock you you get the timer. Which doesn't do anything. If it's red, it means that you recently aggressed another player, meaning Concord will come after you in highsec, sentry guns around gates and stations will fire upon you and people can fire on you without drawing sentry fire in lowsec.
Do be careful when you have a red aggression timer, it's said that it's only for 15 minutes, but yesterday I had sentry guns shooting me 10 minutes after it should have worn off already. Nearly lost a blackbird when undocking :| On my next undocking they didn't fire and I was happy, in the next system they fired again... ah well. The thing is, if you're in highsec and you got a red aggression countdown that has just worn off, test it with a shuttle. Be thorough with it. Leave your hauler filled with vast riches or your pimped battleship docked until you're 100% sure the cops aren't all over you again.
Oh and "threat level high".. it's just a description that doesn't change even when you can take on 100's of them.

UNLESS you have been stealing from soneone 's can, that also gives you a yellow agression. If that person was in a player corp you're agressed to the whole corp. If he's in npc corp it's only him.
Hover your mouse over the agression text and you'll get more info on who you are agressed to and for how long since you can have several agression timers at the same time but it will only show you the longest one. |

So...if I attack another player, and the red aggression timer has timed out, and the sentry guns and CONCORD are leaving me alone, does that mean I got away with it?
Is it only when you have attacked enough players to get a poor security rating that CONCORD and Hi-Sec guns continually batter you?

CONCORD and Sentry-guns will only batter you if you shoot another player who isn't "aggressed" to you. When you have a low security status (anything from -2.0 to -4.5, depending on system), it is the faction police that shoot you. Note that shuttles and pods can avoid the police if it is neccesary to traverse those systems you are "prohibited" from entering.

Yup, if the timer runs out, you got away with it. Of course, while the timer is on, you can't jump and you can't dock, so you're basically waiting in space for 15 minutes, and the victim/target will have plenty of time to probe you out and come finish you off.
We're talking low-sec, btw. In high-sec, no matter where you go, Concord comes after you and kills you if you aggress a neutral. So there's no escaping.

1) note that "getting away with it" is not possible in high-sec, as concord completely nullify you and wtfpwn you, regardless of your ship, before you can do anything.
2) Docking is possible in lowsec, although it will aggress you to the corporation owning the station, so you will pick up sentry fire upon undocking.
EDIT: The aggression timer preventing you from docking/jumping lasts 1 minute from the last aggressive action you take
