Edited by: Idara on 18/04/2008 15:15:23 Edited by: Idara on 18/04/2008 15:10:16 Just got me an email this morning (6 minutes ago, actually) from MMM Publishing regarding the ESMs.
Shipping will be delayed as the maps are updated with "new information" due to an expansion coming out in a "few months".
Originally by: MMM Publishing CCP has agreed to exclusively reveal this data to us now, well in advance of it ægoing liveÆ, in order that we can ensure the first run of EVE Strategic Maps includes the most accurate information possible."
Neat.
Wonder what it is. ---

Originally by: CCP Greyscale Minor clarification: "new systems" here is in reference to new mechanical systems not new solar systems
Was he lieing to us? Originally by: CCP Greyscale Last week I spent a fair amount of time getting to grips with the procedures needed for adding new stations and stuff, which it turns out involves an awful lot of staring-at-the-map and jumping-around-looking-at-stuff. It's less fun than you'd think, to be honest.
Or maybe it is just updated to have more stations, belts, etc.

On a side note, not many people seem to be talkative about the new EVE Maps? Any particular reason for this? |

I am okay with the delay, i just wish they wouldn't have taken my money for 10 days then say that its going to be another 10 days before they ship...
If you don't have a product you shouldn't advertise as being available, they should have given a special pre-order price since that is what they did.
Overall i am still excited about the maps.

The full text was posted on SHC by someone...
Quote: Thanks for ordering EVE Strategic Maps, which we were expecting to begin shipping within the next 10 days.
However, we have just returned from CCP’s Iceland HQ where we discussed some exciting new content which will slightly delay the shipping of EVE Strategic Maps, but will in fact put you well ahead of the rest of the player base.
Why? There is, as you may know already, an expansion coming in a few months, which will introduce completely new content to the world of EVE. So although your copy of ESM will arrive a couple of weeks later than planned, it will now contain advance information, allowing you to take advantage of the knowledge of this new content before anyone else. CCP has agreed to exclusively reveal this data to us now, well in advance of it ‘going live’, in order that we can ensure the first run of EVE Strategic Maps includes the most accurate information possible.
As you read this, Serenity Steele is busy exploring this new content in his Polaris Frigate, plotting the data and mapping every system, planet, moon, asteroid field, ice field and jump gate. With EVE Strategic Maps on your desk, you can be ready to take control.
We will email you again to let you know when your copy of ESM is on the way, but for now thanks for your patience. We promise you will not be disappointed.
Intriguing
*puts on tinfoil hat* If someone thought of doing that as a way to drive sales of the maps... errr... it worked. I want a copy now. *removes hat* |

Um..dont want to be a blatant troll here, but is giving specific Eve players (e.g serenity steel) something akin to that moment of blackadder? Wont this amazingly useful 'top secret' info now give a select few a real advantage?
Melchett: Now, I've compiled a list of those with security clearance, have you got it Darling?
Darling: Yes sir.
Melchett: Read it please.
Darling: It's top security sir, I think that's all the Captain needs to know.
Melchett: Nonsense! Let's hear the list in full!
Darling: Very well sir. "List of personnel cleared for mission Gainsborough, as dictated by General C. H. Melchett: You and me, Darling, obviously. Field Marshal Haig, Field Marshal Haig's wife, all Field Marshal Haig's wife's friends, their families, their families' servants, their families' servants' tennis partners, and some chap I bumped into the mess the other day called Bernard."
Melchett: So, it's maximum security, is that clear?
Blackadder: Quite so sir, only myself and the rest of the English speaking world is to know.

No, the 'top secret' info will be available to all players who choose to, select themselves, by buying the book. Other than that, the email covers all I can say about it to anyone.

I must say, this disturbs me. Serenity Steel is no Dev, not even an ISD member, but she gets a Polaris Frigate, and exclusive access to future game development information? Why? And then she can decide who will get this information afterwards, even is allowed to charge real life money for information about it? That is very, very strange, and I don't understand this.
This is nothing against Serenity, I value her as a very active player who has done lot of good things for the community. I'm only asking how it is possible that CCP can single out one single player, give exclusive information to this player, and allow this player to sell this information for real life money.
And if not somebody had published this email here, only those would know who would have actually paid for this information. I'm actually somewhat speechless and stunned about this.

can the wingers be quiet
between ccp and Serenity Steele they have decided that these maps that have good potenial take up and insteal of relasing verstion 1 now and then in a couple of months add an expantion and then have to release vertion 2 of the maps costing players twice as much.
so there saveing you extra money
being fairly hornerable about a new product and not screwing the player base

I'd say it's CCP being really supportive to the EVE-community.
Serenity Steele has done a great job keeping track of the alliances and the regions they live in.
Besides, don't you think it's worthwile to let him get the info, so that the people who ordered it won't be screwed over by receiving an obsolete map?
There's little a sledgehammer can't fix. If you can't fix it, you need a bigger sledgehammer. If it's unfixable, blame CCP. :p

This is very true, Ill probably purchase Serenity's map because it looks great and its useful too. And Im sure I wouldnt want it to be out of date - but Im really not sure providing a 'head start' to a player (non dev, non ISD) is a sound policy.
The trouble is, without a dev blog on what factional warfare is, it's impossible for anyone to judge if said information is of any use. Consider the scenario where a new region full of faction warfare goodies is going to be opened up - and its next to region 'X'. - How many players, given access to that information, would get onto team speak and say "guys shift your gear down to 'X': we'll make a bucket load!!"?

...- but Im really not sure providing a 'head start' to a player (non dev, non ISD) is a sound policy.
The information wobn't be given to either "a" player who buys the map, not to "ALL" players who buy the map. The info revealed isn't exclusively for them. Everyone who bought the map can share this information found on the new maps.
It's like an announcement, but not made by CCP (yet) but by Serenity steele. And as you said, it will only give clues as to what the new regions are all about.
Besides, I'm sure CCP will reveal the information found on the maps to everyone prior to shipping. (CCP should let us know what they're going to do in regard to this by the way)
Noone will know exactly what'll be implemented until it's there I'm sure.

Edited by: Juwi Kotch on 20/04/2008 08:20:19 I understand that those who have bought or will be buying Serenity's maps are not objecting, that she gets information earlier then everybody else, thus enabling her to deliver an issue which will not be outdated already when it is mailed.
I only hope that Serenity has signed some non-disclosure agreement with CCP (and actually respects it), and that CCP relays the information Serenity has gotten already to all those players who won't or cannot buy the maps without any time delay.
It cannot be, that someone who pays 20 bucks to another player gets crucial information, which others who don't pay that money won't get.
And, btw., Ombeye is providing a cost-free service with practically the same maps for years already, and I hope that he will get this information as quickly as Serenity, that he can update his maps as well in time. Just as those fine chaps, who are producing the political/alliance maps, who probably will need to update their maps as well.
Or is it a new policy of CCP to privilege services players offer to other players which need to be payed for with real money?
What is happening here is disturbing on several levels:
One normal player was singled out to get crucial information before anyone else This player is allowed to utilize this fact to promote the sales of a product offered by her to other players Other players, who are offering similar services to the community but for free, seem to not get this information
Any information about new regions, or new assets in existing regions is most valuable. Players, corporations, and alliances who know about these earlier then others can prepare themselves better by starting to learn skills anticipated to be supportive when conquering those new areas, move closer to the locations to have a head start when the race begins, or organize their internal structures and plans earlier for a concerted attack on the new features.

Shipping for me was about $11.30 USD or so, a big surprise since they didn't mention anything about it nearer the start of the transaction.
That's from wherever it's printed/shipped from, to the Rocky Mountain range in the US. -----
