Hello -- looking for opnions about the usefulness of assault frigates in pvp, particularly the Gallente ships Ishkur and Enyo.
Also some pvp setups for both of them would be appreciated... thx in advance! |

AF's are heavy gunboats. They are great for massing firepower and can take a fair bit of punishment(for a frigate. They are by no means made to stand up against a blob). They are typically not well suited for solo PvP (but then, what is in this multiplayer game?) but would count as a step up for a roving frigate pack doing hit and run raids.

They have their use in a well formed gang because people won't be scared of them while they will dish some good damage.
Just be sure that the gang contains ships that the enemy will more likely shoot. Other people could help on what exactly would attract interest of your enemies, maybe recon ships, EW frigates? |

The problem with the AF's (at least the Ishkur) is the cost.
I can fly a Taranis, Thorax, or Vexor for cheaper than an Ishkur, and each ship performs it's individual role (tackler, ganker, drone boat) better than the Ishkur.
Just my opinion of course. I don't mind losing ships in battle, but overpriced ships bother me.

Max your drone range skills and fit a few drone link mods and get your drones to the 100km+ range. Its a nice alternative to "sniping"
Of course a Vex can do the same thing and carry more drones.

I feel a lot more comfortable in an assault frigate for solo PvP than I do in a T1 frigate. Granted I fly Gallente and Minmatar AFs so I have a choice between the best damage (Gallente) and the best speed/maneuverability (Minmatar.) I understand that AFs cost a lot for a frigate, but they dominate any tier 3 T1 frigate out there. Interceptors dominate tier 2 T1 frigates, but really unless you're looking for an incredibly easy kill you probably just skip the tier 2 guys that you see in belts.

Ishkur has nice resists, and with a proper tank it can hold its own against quite a lot. Coupled with the drone bonuses and whatnot, a few of them in a fleet make for some serious trouble.
Wouldn't bother with the Enyo myself. It looks cool, but that's about it.

I love my Jaguar for (what little I do of) PVP. As an example of effective (since I can't speak directly to the ships you mentioned) was a 1on1 duel. A corp mate, one of those 'oooh Raven... max skills... drool' kinda guys decided to pick fun at my Jaguar. So I fit it for tackle and went after him. Managed to lock him down, kill his entire bay of drones, and tank him and his pathetic missle damage at that range/speed into submission. Only had to run when another corp Officer showed up to get pushy
So yes, I'd say AFs are effective when skilled/used appropriattly. -----------------------------------------------

they are fun to tackle battleships with, my retribution can tank 2-3 ravens all day long, because of my high resistances, robust cap and extremely low sig radius.. of course it has 1 mid slot, so not very valuable in practice.. quite fun though this out of all will remain, they have lived and have tossed; so much of the game will be gain, though the gold and the dice have been lost. |

My personal experience with AF's in PvP is that, yea they can be fun and effective when flown well, they do have a small problem in that for most of the AF's, there is a cruiser out there that will do the same thing just as well, for less cost.

Thanks for answers so far, this is turning out to be an interesting thread...
1) Re: ishkur: whats works better, blasters or rails? 2) How do AFs fare against interceptors? 3) Better for Enyo / Ishkur: speed or armor tank?
Also lookin' for some enyo and ishkur pvp setups, any opinons?
Thanks again...

Assault Frigates are laughably underpowered and a T1 Cruiser is usually better in every way. [yellow]Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions of 400x120 pixels and filesize of 24000 bytes -Navigato |

Assult Frigs are awesome in my opinion. You just need to be very careful when picking your targets.
Learn about the other ships. A passive drake is not going to be an easy kill for an assult frig. Be aware of Drone boats, etc.
I always check the employment history, see what Corp they belong to, check local to see if there are others from the same corp, etc. Compare their time in game to what they are flying - did they have enough time to train T2 guns/launchers/drones?
If you are trying to bait ratters into fights, try to observe them when they are fighting NPCs. What kind of missles are they using? How long does it take them to pop a rat? etc. --this is where my sig goes-- |
