I don't understand missile range. I have missile bombardment 3, which gives me a 30% bonus to flight time. I have missile projection trained to level 3, which gives me a 30 bonus to missile velocity.
According to the heavy missile information the base max flight time for a scourge heavy missile is 10 seconds. My 30% bonus gives me a 13 second flight time The base velocity for the scourge is 3750 m/s, my 30 % bonus brings that to 4875 m/s. I thought that this would be a simple math of 4875 meters x 13 seconds = max range of 63375 meters.
I checked the missile information when the missile is installed in my ship and both the flight duration and maximum velocity are as stated above.
If this is correct why am I unable to inflict damage on a target that is listed as being 61 km away? If I move to a stated distance of 58 km my missiles will start to create damage but from any further distance they do nothing.
Neither the targeted missile battery or myself were moving at the time and I was well within the 63 km maximum range.
I've taken a look around the forums and the guides and don't see where I went wrong in my calculations. Could anyone shed some light on this?

That is its max range, as long as the target is not moving (maybe subtract a bit more as some say the missile has to get up to speed)

When launched the missiles have to get up to full speed, that means that you always lose a bit of max range because of that. Also, as stated above, if the target is moving away from you or moves around that will increase the total distance a missile has to cover.

Thanks for the response, I'll definitely stick to the 58 km as max range. I just don't understand why that became the magic number regardless of skills trained and stated stats.

hey, it's still better than the 37K-ish theoretical max range for heavies without support skills trained

I thought missiles launched at max speed but I could be wrong. I doubt acceleration time amounts to much though even if they do accelerate.
As for moving around that is most likely the answer although it can work both ways. If the ship is chasing you then you can shoot it when it is technically outside of your max missile range. The ship will make up the distance during missile flight time allowing it to hit. If you reverse it then you can only hit the ship when it is closer if you are chasing it.

Nope,
If you watch closely, especially on Heavy/Cruise you will see after about a second or so after they launch they "jump" to their full speed. As a rule of thumb on Standard Missles take off about 2-3km, on Heavies about 3-4, and on cruises, well... I can fling a cruise about 50km farther them my max PvE targeting range so its no big deal there.
Assult Missles and Torps seem to accelerate faster, but they also don't travel as far or as fast. Max range for those is very close to their max range.

But how do you know that this is really what's happening and not just a graphic?
???
This game seems to be table driven.
In a game like Planetside - each round fired was an object and it if collided with another object - such as a tree or one of your own people who moved into it's path - it would hit it.
This game shoots right through asteroids and friendly players without impacting them.
On my system - the target blows up before the guns hit it.
Thus, it looks to me like it's all calculated from tables and the stuff we see on screen is merely eye candy.
I don't know - but that is what it looks like.

Test it:
Drop a can and go to the max range according to the flightime x missile speed calculation. See if you hit it.

Save your ammo,it has been tested.
My max range for heavy missiles is 63337 meters. I am not able to achieve hits at a static target when I am not moving either at a range of greater than 58 km. The difference between theoretical and effective range was found to be approximately 4 km. Others have had the same experience.

I know, was a reply to Candice. If you're unsure of something, test it :)
