Hey, I'd like to run EVE Premium Graphics version on the latest version of Ubuntu (x64). (Not only was the linux client giving me severe graphics bugs, I really want the premium content)
I have my graphics card driver installed but thats about it. My graphics card is a GeForce 7900GTX.
What "emulation" program do I need to install and run EVE? Do I need to do anything extra to handle DirectX? My card handles DX and OpenGL both fine but I know you get better performance if you can carry the DX straight to the graphics card instead of translating it to OpenGL.
I read all the stickies and other posts but I had trouble understanding it since I'm quite new to Linux and am just getting a grasp of all this technical stuff.
Thanks!

Basically, you can use the official Linux client (it uses Cedega) or you can use wine.
The official Linux client can be downloaded by clicking "EVE Client" on the bar to the right, click on Linux, and follow the instructions. At this time, the official client does not have support for premium graphics (someone correct me if I'm wrong, last I heard they were working on it).
Wine can use premium graphics, but I use wine, and when using premium graphics most stations don't render (and I heard capitals also don't render, not sure about this though). I use wine with classic graphics, and it's very stable.
The wine appdb page for EVE is here. Basically, download the premium client for windows, and install it just like in windows. Make sure you read the notes section on the link I gave you.
Oh, and one last thing, I recommend you use wine 0.9.58, you can install it by clicking here, and downloading the correct deb (Wine 0.9.58 i386) then installing it.
Any questions?

After trying it out with WINE, I have an error.
I need a .dll file that seems to be associated with directX. It showed the exact name of the file but the error message doesn't show again.

d3d9x_35.dll? try running RedistD3DXOnly.exe in the bin directory of EVE.

Yeah thats what I did. It just didn't seem to do anything. The window just closed out. Does that mean it executed properly?
If so, EVE still doesent work. Everything is like blanked out but if i press esc i can get to the options. Under graphics, it says Direct3D HAL (or something very similar) instead of my graphics card like it should say. |

And my EVE client says the same thing under display adapter.
EDIT: are you using wine 0.9.58 like I said? you can open up a terminal and type "winecfg" then go to about to check your version of wine. |

did you follow the notes section of the appdb page I linked? specifically
copy arial*.ttf to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/ (install ms corefonts package and then search for arial*.ttf on your disk)
?

I was able to do that, but now the FPS is abysmal and no ships or stations render at all, just the lights!
I'm going to install the latest version of Wine, the one for ubuntu 8.04, and see if I get differing results.

Same abysmal performance, but now all the lights and tails are black and the only thing that renders correctly is my ship.
Its a psychedelic experience thats for sure. |

Edited by: Aurix Lexico on 26/04/2008 22:33:27 The only thing I can say is check your graphics card driver (I use envy to install my nvidia drivers)
EDIT: oh, are you using premium? like I said before, some things won't render with premium graphics and wine |
