Thought this might be of interest to anyone holding back from upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04 for fear of problems with EVE. I was running the EVE client on Ubuntu 7.10. Earlier today, I decided to try using Ubuntu's distro-upgrade function to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 in situ. So far as EVE was concerned, this went without a hitch, I didn't have to reinstall EVE or any drivers, etc. Whole process took about an hour and a half. |

I also came back. I find the new client and ubuntu to work rATHER well. I have a couple observations.
my num pad on my laptop not to work.
the graphics on my Gateway FX with my 8800 GT is rather interesting.
other than that uber job.
Does anyone know how to move my windows overview settings to my Linux eve? I wish there was a backup i could do and a import....

Hm,
I am struggling right now. Got the whole "black-screen-instead-of-login" using wine... and the "space-is-white" thing using the official client. *grml*
So far all fiddling, googleing and looking has not gotten me anywhere. :( |

I got it all working using the wine + eve approach using the latest wine (0.9.61) from here. |

If you're getting the "black screen but no login" error - try closing every application that produces sound, such as music players, YouTube windows in your browser of choice, etc. On my Ubuntu machine, if Eve doesn't have complete and undisputed control of the sound card, it will refuse to load the login screen. After the application is loaded, sound-producing apps can run in the background, but they will be muted as Eve will not share the hardware.

I got it working in one go, though there does appear to be an mmap warning on the command line and lsb_release complains now and again.
As for the sound option, you can always disable the sound options in the configuration options. That way no sound stuff is used and it will not hang on that.
