I just had a first foray into low sec and bagged a few rats - a prfitable trip, mafe over a mill. in loot - I tried to take on a lone cruiser rat by orbiting at 20km and firing bloodclaws but that seems to be my limit and that rat was hitting me at 25km with Widowmakers - I had plenty of time to warp out to safety but was wondering if there is any way I can take him down with my current setup?
Still need Energy Management level 4 - in about 16 hrs and I'll be able to fit my last Malkuth missile launcher and upgrade the shields. How about smartbombs? I have th skill and an emty slot atm and there are no friendlies around?

Try a MWD - if you can get fast enough, the heavy missiles will do a lot less damage to you. -- Ralara / Ralarina

Edited by: Dosgar on 27/04/2008 20:59:42 Super-fast afterbuner. Gives you a huge boost to speed at the expense of making your ship easier to hit. Using a MWD against missile users is often a no-no.
In this case, using a MWD will probably mean you take more damage from the heavies, as a Kessie is a pretty sluggish ship and will not have the agility to speed-tank. I'd suggest fitting rat specific hardeners to your tank to reduce the damage you're taking. I'm guessing you're fighting Guristas, so that would be a Kinetic hardener to use :)
Also work on your missile support skills too, you should be able to hit the rats at over 30km away with missile launchers (not assualt missile launchers).

Edit: sorry realised what you meant now - I'm after an Outlaw boat - could be a Murderer?

If you're fighting Guristas rats (Caldari-design ships in Caldari space) then the best damage type to do is kinetic (Bloodclaw missiles). Guristas' also do kinetic damage so you need to protect yourself against that, for example fitting a kinetic shield hardener.

okay - that boy was defo hitting me with Widowmakers as I saw it on the HUD so I'll have a look at the database for them and the market for kinetic hardeners - cheers

Widowmakers do thermal damage, so a thermal hardener is what you're after :)
Or you could fit an invulnerability field which gives a boost to all damage types for your shield, and a Damage Control System (looks like a briefcase) in a low slot that boosts damage resistance against all types, for your shield, armour and hull. And it costs practical no capacitor to run! :)

Edited by: Jurgen Cartis on 27/04/2008 23:12:51 Rat Specific hardeners are a great help when fighting NPCs, you'll be wanting a Heat Dissipation Amplifer (or some variant) to help with Widowmakers. I'm pretty sure a Kestrel can take a single cruiser spawn. I've seen my Merlin tank at least two at once (and my skills were much worse back then).
Try getting closer to the rat, you'll be more likely to get under his guns and dodge the gunfire, but the missiles will still hit. The MWD won't help you tank missile fire unless you can get the Kestrel going pretty fast (as in, 3.5km/s pretty fast), which is difficult without very good navigation skills. The problem is that it increases your signature radius, which will make Widowmakers hit you that much harder if you don't get going fast enough to outrun the missile's explosions.
You can also try fitting Rockets if you try getting up close and personal, it makes fitting much easier and the Rockets do more damage over time.

okay thanks for the replies - I'll upgrading the Kestrel in 12 hours or so with Micro Aux Power Core and armour and will play around with some of these options and see what works.

You could also consider coming up close and personal so you can fit rockets. Rockets guzzle up ammo faster than standard missiles, but they do because of that inflict more DPS. A rocket kessie also has the advantage that you'd at least have something to bite back with should you have a 'visitor' during your ratting .

heh, MWD for the win! I had this same problem with 'shadows of war 5 of 5'. Ran the whole thing solo in my slow arse destroyer and finally got to the 'state communications officer'... damned missile cruiser that I couldn't close with beyond 20k. After 3-4 attempts at this I tossed a MWD in and still got the snot shot out of me but I got in close enough to pop it.

o.k. thanks for the replies, good to know that it's do-able even if it's a bit tricky. Just got to get Worlds Collide done tonight then I'll go back and pay that cruiser a visit.
