One of my pet hamsters died recently. 'Tonic' was one of six sisters living together in a city made of Rotastack hamster housing that I call Hamsterdam. Another of the sisters looked so much like her, I can't help but think she may have been a twin. Either way, we called the 'twins' Gin & Tonic. Tonic has less calories than Gin, so the smaller of the two become Tonic. She was 17 weeks and 5 days old.
She's always been smaller than the others, and was fine until the day before she died - she and the vet thinks she may have had a long term problem with her kidneys or lungs or something - which basically means that nothing could have been done to change her fate.
She was one of the liveliest (spelling?). She would reach up to the metal bars around the tops of the rooms and do a kind of sideways-monkey-bar thing, which was funny. Due to her size, when she got in the wheel when someone was already using it, instead of the wheel stopping, she just whizzed all the way round and came crashing into the face of whoever was out for their morning jog, lol.
Anyways, due to the fact that she had one of the most entertaining lives a hamster could have, and the fact that her death was almost definitely caused by something that was out of the control of anyone on Earth and could not be prevented - I see some comfort in that.
There are still 5 other hamsters that depend solely on myself and my girlfriend for their survival and their entertainment, so I can't spend too long thinking about how I miss tonic, although missed she shall be.
So from myself, my girlfriend, and the girls; Archers, Baileys, Gin, Malibu and Vodka,
RIP Tonic

I'm really sorry man, I know how gutting it is to lose a Hamster.
Remember her fondly and live on with the ones you have.

Sorry for your loss chap.
Oddly enough as I was reading your post, I could almost hear the strains of Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in the background as I imagined what it would be like if Simon Bates was reading your post aloud over the airwaves to a tearful British public.
Does this make me perverse?

I know you're pain man, and i'm sorry for your loss. Sounds like he had a good life.
I lost a cat the day after Thanksgiving (11/26) of last year. Kona was only 4 and a half. = ( He got a "cold" from his buddy, but due to an unknown heart problem he died the next day. Sadly I couldn't be with Kona because i had to go back to college that day. My two cats were so funny and cute together. If it was hard on me, it must have been hell for his mate. His buddy lost like 2 pounds after that. I still miss Kona like hell though. In fact, the background of my computer is still a picture of him. :`(

She was a good hamster. Hamstering with style through a long and rich life. Hamsterdam wont be the same again after her demise. May she live happily on everafter in the big hamsterwheel in heaven.

Touche Sirs; Touche.
As for Tonic RIP.
The story of Tonic whirling around the wheel and planting face first in the one running is priceless and I would say that should be more then enough to keep her in your heart for many years to come.
Here is to the memories of lost loved ones forever being held within our heads.

They were all asleep. Had I have taken the picture late at night, you'd probably have seen half a dozen balls of fur evenly distributed throughout Hamsterdam....

why not buy a mouse or a rat? they have less health problems
i once had a hamster, it had - oversized reproductive male organs disease, soon he died
i had some mice when i was 5 years old, they had babies, i crushed the skull of one of them, it was a disaster for me, i still remember (it was a bad accident when a little mouse baby tried to find cover under my hand, which i used as means to support my body while sitting on the floor and playing with them)
edit: you have suck a cute mouse house, i remember my passion to mic and hamsters, i built something like that with lego construction blocks, fish tank and carton |
