1. Do not lock players unless you wish to fight them. This applies anywhere in whatever system. Locking other pilots for no good reason can irritate / annoy the other player. This is because other players can be at war and be jumpy.
You do not need to lock someone to look at their ship or get information about them- use right click show info.
2. Do not swear unnecessarily. Young people often play this game and bear this in mind.
3. Ask if you can take from other peoples cans- including pirate cans other players have killed. Often players will let you take them if you ask- just be polite.

Edited by: Admiral Seafort on 27/04/2004 01:04:20 Note about taking from others' cans:
Sometimes, when rat hunting (specifically, belt-patrolling), you will find others in the belt doing the same thing as you are. If you both engage rats and you're not sure which ones you killed, and ESPECIALLY if the other guy has a bigger badder ship and/or has questionable security status, always ask before taking from any of the cans.
A fellow corp member, in a BB, once got really close to the wrong side of a Scorp pilot when he didn't ask even though they killed the rats "together", so to speak (but not cooperatively; just simultaneously).

is there a way to see if someone is damaged beside locking him? Yesterday, I locked a guy who was killing rats in the same aera as me, to see if the rats damaged him. He immediatly opened fire on me.... The sad part is we were fighting at a gate... well in range of the sentry. His merlin got blown up in less than 5 secs. I talked a little with him and we sorted it out. The even more sad part, is after a little trip at the nearest station, I came back and there was TWO jettisoned cargo belonging to that guy. I looked into, and there was his merlin stuff, and all the stuff to fit a kestrel in the other cargo. They guy came back to get his stuff too soon... After telling him "ouch, that's gotta hurt" he allowed me to take all his stuff. Locking someone CAN be rewarding

As stated above, locking anyone without reason is not good. Many players will remember you, and might take you out if they can.
I usually fly in a hauler, and get locked all the time. Just so people can cargoscan me. These people dont make friends.
And if you want to make friends, you might help some people out by killing rats when they are mining.
A friend cannot be your enemy. And Eve is a game which requires having friends.

Another bit of advise to new players (i saw this happen and thought it was rather odd.)
In high security systems (like the one you start in) dont fire on other players while you are in you newbie ship mounting that civilian weapon. That will get you killed by concord faster than you could even mount damage on the other player.
On top of that, dont come back out into space as soon as you land as it will just get you destroyed again. (Concord will go out of its way to kill your ship for around 30 minutes so just stay in the station.)
I saw a reaper taken down by concord twice for doing this. First he targeted me and I did nothing and he did nothing (I was in an indy), then he targeted a corp mate of mine flying in a probe and decided to fire that civilian weapon on his reaper. the shield on my corp mate never got below 95-98% and he died real quick. Not more than a few minutes later this new guy is back at the same ore field to get blown up again by concord. Not that he lost anything at all equipment wise, he did lose security rating for the first attack. if that was his only his he would have gotten 1 unit of trit each time he was destroyed though.
Sometimes it does pay to think before you act.

I'm ultra conservative when it comes to ****ing people off.
I go out of my way to be courteous and polite. I'm sure I'll get victimized for it, but that's how I am.
Here's a few of my lessons for newbies learned the hardway in my brief time in Eve so far:
(1) If you buy a new ship and plan to run pirate missions or any other type of combat, be sure to buy guns.
(2) If you buy guns, be sure to buy the required ammo.
(3) If you buy the ammo, make sure you LOAD the guns.
I bought a new ship in Nonni V, jumped there, docked, picked it up, got a kill pirate mission and undocked. The 2 pirates were waiting on me just outside the station. I ran back inside. Bought guns. Bought ammo. Went back out. Got wasted. I didn't know loading wasn't automatic!
Noobish I know. The lesson learned was a hard one but one I'll remember for a long time.

Zeltan, who cares what others say, you did it once, you learned from it, and you know that you have to make sure you load your guns in the future. Just for learning that, you are now a better player than you were before it happened. Besides, if you can't learn from your mistakes how can you ever learn?

The 3rd one reminds me of a Player in a frigate robbed the loot i just killed for. He regretted it in the end. ----------
